Fresh start for Brown
Tim Barrow, Illawarra Mercury | January 20, 2009 - 11:15AM
FORMER St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown will take another step in his new career in the English Super League at the weekend when Huddersfield play their first trial game.
Putting behind him the disappointment of star Huddersfield recruit Todd Carney being denied a visa to play in the Super League, Brown will coach the team for the first time against Wigan at the Giants' home ground, Galpharm Stadium, on Sunday.
Even without the disgraced ex-Raiders playmaker, Brown will still have a handful of former NRL stars at his disposal, including Wests Tigers fullback Brett Hodgson, Penrith and Tigers centre Paul Whatuira, Canberra centre Jamahl Lolesi and Cowboys forward David Faiumu.
Brown's first Super League assignment is against French-based Catalans, which includes former star Dragons prop Jason Ryles, on February 14.
The clash is the same day as St George Illawarra play their first trial game - against the Roosters in Perth - in the lead-up to March's season opener against NRL heavyweights Melbourne at Telstra Dome.
After six years as Dragons mentor, Brown signed with Huddersfield last year in the wake of the club luring master coach Wayne Bennett for the next three seasons.
The Bennett regime is firmly in place, spearheaded by high-performance manager Jeremy Hickmans.
Former assistant coach Kurt Wrigley is now the chief executive of rugby league and touch football hybrid Oztag.
Wrigley took on the role after Bennett made mass changes to the coaching personnel at the end of last season.
Long-time Dragons conditioning coach Paul McGregor is working at Helensburgh and has taken over as coach of Illawarra Carlton League club Wests.
