Coach Wayne Bennett has named a 21-man squad, omitting Wing, prop Shane Webcke (knee), halfback Craig Gower (groin) and front-rower Jason Ryles, for Australia's first game in the US in half a century. Australia and New Zealand played exhibition games at Long Beach and Los Angeles in 1954.

Both sides have agreed to having unlimited numbers on the interchange bench and unlimited replacements, meaning every fit Australian may get a run.

The Americans - coached by Sydney Roosters assistant John Cartwright - have chosen to go with mostly local players, along with Parramatta winger Matt Petersen and former Canberra and Western Suburbs centre Brandon Costin forming an unlikely halves combination.

Marcus Vassilakopoulos, a former Sheffield Eagles player who also plied his trade on the Central Coast before moving to Philadelphia, is hooker. Also playing is giant Texan Ian Blake, who has signed with the Broncos for next season, while American-born Guildford player Chris Waters has also flown in.

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley, in Philadelphia to help prepare for the game, has been surprised at the amount of public and media interest.

"A lot depends on the weather but if people don't come, it won't be because they're unaware that it's on," Annesley said. "We'll be disappointed if we get less than 10,000 and there's a good chance to get more. The stadium holds 52,000, so that's only 20 per cent of capacity and quite realistic."

Annesley said he had been on Philadelphia's Fox 29 several times to discuss the game and had travelled to Manhattan to be interviewed on a live Fox 5 breakfast program. He was also on a high-rating radio program for 15 minutes last week.

A local sportscaster will join Warren Smith and Laurie Daley in the commentary box on Tuesday night, with the game being shown live on Fox Sports in Australia and Fox Sports World in the US.

And the three campuses around Franklin Field - University of Pennsylvania, Drexel and Temple - have been flooded with promotional material. League officials have been lecturing and working with students at Drexel who are studying sports management.

The referee will be Robert Irwin, a former Queensland Cup whistler now living in New York. Former NRL touch judge Darren Gocher will run the line.

"The great thing is we are now able to capitalise on the game," said American National Rugby League president David Niu, a former St George halfback. "We are part of the After School Allstars program, which will give us access to kids in 15 cities, and we are adding Baltimore and Boston to our competition next year."

Philadelphia's Glen Mills Bulls have replaced the New York Knights in the curtain-raiser against the Coogee Dolphins.

Teams: US v Australia, Franklin Field, 11.45am Wednesday (Sydney time).

US: Eric Hollingsworth; Nate Smith, Chris Waters, Jeff Preston, Ric Dortone; Matt Petersen, Brandon Costin; Danny Bull, Shayne Mains, Ian Blake, Matt Astill, Marcus Vassilakopoulos, Ed Woodbridge. Res: Ryan Coleman, Gareth Gibbs, Will Brazier, Christin Rahui, Joe Becker, Ben Kelly, JC Rocha, Kevin Deal, Roger Tuamoheloa.

Well it 12:00 pm eastern standard time. I have to be at Franklin Field at 4 pm and cann't wait. Was so excitted about the game last night, I could not sleep. Let me just say the hard work by the dedicated people envolved will be shown in a few short hours.

The night will start off at 5 pm with a flag match with two kids teams. I am antisabating how this is going to turn out. I have along with Dave Nui and several other of my Bulls teamates have helped put on coaching clinics to the local kids of the Philadelphia region.

At 6 pm the American people get thier first taste of what Rugby League really is. Although it will not be shown on TV the Glen Mills Bulls will play the Coogee Dolphins in the 1st annual "Rememberance Cup". The Bulls will be without 8 of thier teamates, because they will be playing for the Tomahawks. However, we are not quiters had will give the Dolphins all we have. The Bulls will welcome back from injury fellow teamate and Tomahawk Cory Sheriden. Expect to see some highlights of some big hits in this match.

Then the much antisapated match between the Americans and the Australians. What can I say that has not been already said. I expect even more hard hitting. We will soon see.

I'm excited about the game - but I have to say it has all the fascination of a train wreck - the Aussies will carve up.

Having said that - the Americans have every possible 'edge' to make it a more even encounter. They have a smaller ground so they can have a compacted defensive line - they have unlimited replacements and four quarters so they can even up the fitness advantage a bit - they have a surface they have all played on before (at NY Knights home ground) and none of the Aussies have played on - they have a local ref who will no doubt go pretty easy on them - the Aussies are jetlagged, tired after a long tour, have been hitting the piss pretty hard after tri-nations final, are keen to have fun and will be taking the Yanks pretty lightly - while the Yanks have been training for months for this game and are set to play the games of their lives.

The Yanks have always faught hard in all their games - even when completely outclassed - so I expect them to be fighting right till the end. Good luck to all the players - and good luck to the Bulls in what looks a very even contest for the opening game.

I think its fantastic to be honest result doesnt matter RL in the USA is a start and can only build from here. I like the sound of kids taking part in 15 cities that will have a big impact give it 10 years and we may see more USA players turning up in the NRL and a strong local comp in the US.
