Future Great Britain Lion Tours

So, I'm aware that after the All Golds Tour last year, the Great Britain team split up into England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. However, I read that the Lions of Great Britain would be touring Australia and New Zealand in 2010, and would only remain as a touring side. So, will that mean that the Lions won't be playing anymore games in the UK, and there will no more Ashes tests played in the UK (it will only be England vs Australia from now on)?

yes wehave split up into ENGLAND,SCOTLAND,WALES & IRELAND and from now on GREAT BRTIAIN will be a overseas touring team like the british lion RU team..

a 2010 tour is unlikely...2012 has been mentioned, but why have a GB tour a year before the world cup in 2013 when england, wales, scotland should be preparing for said world cup..noticed i left ireland of that list...word is they want to go it alone..who can blame them, multi national teams like GB do nothing for the development in those 'original' countries...

touring australia & NZ on the same tour is unlikely and are more likely to tour one at a time..meaning we'd play 3 test against australia, maybe a couple of tests against PNG then on the next tour play 3 test against NZ ,maybe a couple of test against tonga/samoa..

as for the ashes..the RFL have announced that "England will play in all future series, competitions & world cups"....so if it happens a series between england & australia in england will be for the ashes...i also assume when/if GB tour australia the ashes will also be contested..

but at this moment in time and for the forseeable future,as westie has pointed out over in the international forum, GB as a concept is dead because all of the GB team is ENGLISH, so why not let the England national rugby league team battle it out for major honours..

England vs Australia in England is the Ashes
Australia vs Great Britain in Australia is the Ashes.

Two different teams competing in the ashes, ay? (England and Great Britain). So, you will have players who are eligable to play for GB, but not for England?

yep..all the welsh, scots and maybe irish.......but seeing how none of them would be good enough the GB team would, and does at the moment, consist entirely of englishmen

which renders GB pointless...which is why it's been put on the back burner

Because England isnt the national team at all, its a broken down one. As far as I know the UK is still called the UK and not 'England'!

When the Kangaroos tour the UK, they usually play Wigan, Hull, St Helens and the lot as well as the international test matches.

And when the Lions play, they are always officially referred to as Great Britian and Ireland XIII on their jerseys

the kangaroos have'nt played any additional games against club sides since 1992?

if GB tour australia i suspect we'd play a maximum of 4 or 5 games ..3 against australia & 1 or 2 against PNG..likewise when we tour NZ , 3 againt NZ & 1 or 2 against an island nation..

international teams have no business playing club teams...international teams don't play each other enough as it is so don't waste a game playing a club side..

it's hard for me to say that because my club, oldham, have a very long history of playing touring australian & NZ team....but times have changed

And when the Lions play, they are always officially referred to as Great Britian and Ireland XIII on their jerseys

no we have'nt

From wikipedia.org
During the 1990s the Rugby Football League expanded this to Great Britain and Ireland, and the jersey bore the name British Isles XIII. In 2004 the "...and Ireland" was dropped from the title, however, the Irish shamrock continues to form part of the RFL's crest and British Isles XIII remains on the jersey, as of 2006.

I wasn't as accurate as I thought I was, but Ireland still plays a big part of the Great Britain crest.

The last Kangaroo tour which involved club sides was back in 1994 when Mal Meninga was captain. They only lost 1 match out of 18, the first Test against Great Britain 8 - 4 in front of 57,000 crowd.

Kangaroo Tour: 1994

Sean Fagan of RL1908.com

Mal Meninga became the first captain to lead two Kangaroo tours when he returned to England with a side that included Fittler, Clyde, Brasher, Mullins, Sailor, Langer, Menzies, Pay, Roberts and Renouf.

The First Test proved to be a real surprise as the Kangaroos had easily won all their lead-up games. With just over a quarter of the match gone, Britain was shattered when captain Shaun Edwards produced an appalling head-high tackle on Clyde and was duly sent off.

However, sparked by Jonathon Davies who scored a spectacular try when he beat Mullins in the corner, the British won by 8-4.

At Old Trafford for the 2nd Test, Britain held firm in defence early and took a 4-0 lead. At that point, the Aussies seemed to be on the verge of being frustrated and certainly looked beatable.

However, in the 26th minute Meninga snatched a pass from Britain's Goulding and raced 60m before sending Ettingshausen over for a converted try. The home side was stunned and quickly allowed another try and by half-time were down by 18-4.

The Kangaroos went on to win by a handsome margin (38-8) to send the series to a 3rd Test decider.

The final Ashes Test of the 20th Century was an even affair with torrid defence until the last quarter of the game. Unable to get over the top of the Kangaroos, the British floundered near the end and were eventually well beaten by 23-4.

It was not a true reflection of the intensity of the match, but it demonstrated the Australians' drive to play at the highest intensity for the full 80 minutes. Laurie Daley and Ricky Stuart were the Kangaroos' best players.

The French leg of the 1994 tour only included one Test - won by Australia by 74-0. The once keen rivals have not played against each other since.

The last Kangaroos tour was a 6 match undefeated tour back in 2003, with a 3 match test series with GB and lead up matches with France, Wales and England A. The Aussies got a scare from France and England A.
I would like to see full or partial club game tours in the future from either country, but I guess in this professional day and age it might be wishful thinking....

The driving force behind the split into four nations is Government funding!

Sport ENGLAND will not offer funding to a GB team.

Scottish, Welsh and Irish interests are also damaged by being part of a GB team; their respective Governments will not make a funding contribution unless they stand independently both domestically and internationally.

The continuing development of the Celtic nations is best served by the split.

I miss the old style tours of the big three nations and wish we could find a way to bring them back, club games and all. However I do like the idea of making a Lions tour a rarer and therefore more prestigious occasion with the honour of becoming a British Lion regaining its value.

Australia beating Wales 70-0 in front of 3,000 people, or Australia beating Leeds 30-20 in front of 20,000 people. I know which one I and the vast majority of rugby league fans would prefer.
