The driving force behind the split into four nations is Government funding!

Sport ENGLAND will not offer funding to a GB team.

not true, they can offer funding, have offered funding and continue to offer funding. I'm not sure why this little line always gets trotted out.

"The idea that we've had to do it for Sport England funding is a myth. They've always said it's irrelevant whether we play as England or Great Britain." - Richard Lewis

In addition, who is competing and hosting the 2012 Olympics? That's right Great Britain.

The continuing development of the Celtic nations is best served by the split.
It's not, because it means their venues and players will miss out on the big games. England will be in the major tournaments, so players who would have otherwise played for Wales and Great Britain (Briers, Harris, Cunningham et al) are now going to play for England instead.

I miss the old style tours of the big three nations and wish we could find a way to bring them back, club games and all. However I do like the idea of making a Lions tour a rarer and therefore more prestigious occasion with the honour of becoming a British Lion regaining its value.
A Lions tour is an incredibly rare beast already. We haven't had one to Australia since 1992.

Making Lions a touring team only is just copying off union, and only a tennis player with no knowledge of the history of RL like Richard Lewis would come up with something like that.

cheers griff...

that about sport England & GB is'nt true...sport England said they would continue to support GB and grassroots RL...and they still do via the GB community lions..

plus the welsh & scottish are now free to apply for grants & funding from SPORT WALES & SPORT SCOTLAND

Australia beating Wales 70-0 in front of 3,000 people, or Australia beating Leeds 30-20 in front of 20,000 people. I know which one I and the vast majority of rugby league fans would prefer.

i see your point...but the only players playing rugby league during the "international season" (oct-nov) are international players...everyone else is on a beach..so an international side vs a club side is never going to happen again
