Still here now and earlier addressing the decision with dissapointment. You might not be a supporter of the clubs who missed out but this decision is bad in general for all league fans.

Was never going to happen in this economic climate

I haven’t been to Shark Park but with the development going around, they’d be limited in increasing their capacity. Without any government cash, the ground becomes NSW Cup standard or another block of units with water views
Smart move is to sell it as well to a developer and find a better site closer to one of the train stations locally or even in Miranda

lame excuse
honour your agreements , or don't sign them

they signed a new one in the middle of covid after pulling out of the first one
enough ...
they need to be held to account

NSW should have to bid for it but no one is giving Stadiums for it, and Accor holds 30k more then Suncorp

Say the government agree on new stadiums

Then the incoming Government scraps the deal anyway, Same outcome

Well then Penrith shouldn’t be either based on that rationale.

Where have I said Penrith should get one? That atleast follows the 3 CBD plan though.

For it to be viable it needed both party support which it doesn't have

Hang on, dont we have three clubs currently sharing accor?
You'd be stupid to not want your club to be playing at WSS over Accor or some run down suburban ground.
There is literally no reason it wouldn't work if its a great venue and in the right location.
Many Clubs are not growing their fanbases and havent for decades. If the suburban strategy falls over then something needs to be done. Sydney is heading for a very big transition of haves and have nots. Seeing all the impressive corporate suites full and 28k people paying up to $90 for a seat at Commbank on Friday night I can only imagine the profit Eels made out of that game. That is what every NRL game should be like in Sydney.

I like your idea and thinking. If only the NRL had such planning nous.

However I do think Sydney really is a different beast. Despite being smack bang in the middle of Sydney, Commbank is really only central to Parramatta. Its location in Parramatta is why it works for the Eels, but not the Bulldogs, Panthers or Tigers. It will always be foreign.

Even if it takes decades, the goal should be to get decent stadiums convenient to the communities they represent.

Eels in Parramatta
Panthers in Penrith
Bulldogs in either Belmore or (even better) Bankstown
Tigers in either Campbelltown or at a stretch Liverpool.

It is dots on a map stuff but I think its important in Sydney - otherwise where is the identity. The other factor is timeslots. Basically there are too many shit ones.

Coming from Newcastle, I don’t think Hunter Stadium needs an upgrade yet. Maybe in 5-10 years time. Wollongong definitely needs one.

I don’t know about the viability of a Southern Sydney stadium. Who would be playing there outside of the Sharks? Maybe a small amount for an upgrade of Shark Park The Dragons future growth is really the Wollongong and the South Coast. Both those clubs just need to play games at the SFS. It would help (Sharks predominantly) to expand their supporter base.

I know this is not NSW but in terms of regions Canberra needs it more than anybody.
As a Knights fan too I think after attending Sundays game that there should be some upgrades.

The screen at the southern end wasn't even working.

melb hardly has zero traffic , but it is far better organised. Its 2 venues are on main train lines & you can walk from Flinders St station to the MCG in 15 minutes , or take a tram.

Sydney is a different kettle of fish ... completely
Is it? commbank is on a main train line, sfs is a 15 min walk from central.

I kind of get that but given the chances of Sydney getting two or three more commbank level stadium's is pretty much zero, and having seen first hand last week how superior commbank is, and how easy it is to get to, it’s a no brainer really.
sure it might mean 15mins extra travel for dogs and tigers fans but geez it’s got to be worth it compared to playing at Accor or a sht suburban ground. Add in the fact you’d also have six games a year for reciprocal memberships agreements and you should easily crack 20k plus crowds for those six games.

This was interesting, the conversation on here seemed to be that the $800mill was going to redistributed but turns out it was only $250-350 Mill of it. They’d be better going back to plan A and making Accor a decent national stadium.

“Under a 2018 agreement struck by the then premier Gladys Berejiklian, the NRL grand final would remain in Sydney until 2042 on the proviso the Olympic venue would be reconfigured into a 70,000-seat rectangular stadium at a cost to taxpayers of about $800 million.
The government abandoned the plan during the pandemic and V’Landys claims he had secured a verbal commitment from Berejiklian and also Perrottet for between $250 million and $350 million to instead be spent upgrading stadiums in Cronulla, Manly, Leichhardt and Newcastle.”

They would if people really wanted to go. Still takes an hour to get into MCG, Marvel or AAMI if driving from most suburbs. Melbourne has the same population as Sydney but is more spread out. Yes, our PT is much, much better, but the fans all whinged when the AFL closed all the suburban grounds. It is shame that there are no games at all at the traditional venues, but for the financial good of the game it was the best move they ever made. It took people a few years to get used to, but the end result was a 50% increase in crowds in Melbourne and Adelaide, and all teams now have fans all over the city.
You can upgrade the suburban venues over time like what is happening at Manly. Keep the capacities 15K - 18K and play half the games - those v other Sydney clubs at SFS, Homebush (not many) or Parra. After a few years of whinging the crowds will climb and these big games will have 50% higher crowds with roughly half the crowd supporting each team which is how it is in Melbourne. The key to growing crowds is opposition supporters.

Exactly. Spot on.

The key to growing attendances, obviously coupled with better scheduling and pricing, is having stadiums in locations that is accessible to the most amount of people.

Having stadiums in outer suburbs is only beneficial to those living in that suburb or those adjacent to.

It’s a discussion that has been going around for decades and any decision by the government might shake people into the realisation that it is impractical (and counterproductive to those clubs and expanding their supporter base) to expect that each of them have a world class facility.

Penrith and Manly will get decent enough facilities. If the city can get three 30 to 40k plus stadiums (I would follow the planning of the three CBD’s and eventually have one at Bradfield/Liverpool) then that is a very good result. The remaining 7 clubs should have their games at those three venues
