Sharks eye home comforts for NRL finals

George Clarke August 3, 2022

The NRL could deny Cronulla the right to host a home semi-final if the Sharks secure a top-two finish for the first time since 1999 due to the outdated facilities at PointsBet Stadium.

Finishing their season with games against bottom-eight battlers St George Illawarra, Wests Tigers, Manly, Canterbury and Newcastle, the Sharks will fancy their chances of securing a top-two finish under impressive first-year coach Craig Fitzgibbon.

The Sharks have been able to turn their home ground into a graveyard for rival sides this season.

Third-placed Cronulla have a 7-1 record at the ground and only a round-12 loss to the Sydney Roosters has prevented the Sharks from being undefeated at PointsBet.

But in previous years where Cronulla have earned a finals game at home they have had to move games to the old Sydney Football Stadium.

Broadcast, corporate and parking facilities play a factor in the NRL’s consideration of granting clubs a home finals game with the league set to inform clubs of their requirements to host finals fixtures over the next month.

“If we win a home-ground advantage, we would want to play at home,” Sharks chief executive Dino Mezzatesta told AAP after his club last hosted a home finals game at PointsBet Stadium in 2008.

“That’s our starting point and given we are a fair bit out we will continue to have dialogue with the NRL.

“We have had no problem selling out our games regardless of the timeslot.”

PointsBet Stadium is currently working at an 11,500 capacity due to renovations but NRL head of football Graham Annesley said that wouldn’t be a determining factor.

Last year the NRL hosted finals games at Mackay’s 12,000-capacity BB Print Stadium.

“There’s not a specific (crowd) number because it’s a combination of not just a capacity but reserved seating,” Annesley told AAP.

“The long and the short of it is that the NRL has to approve the venue.

“We haven’t reached any conclusion that we would relocate the Sharks should they qualify for a home semi-final.

“We need to go through the process with them and every other club.”

The Sharks’ alternative preference would likely be the newly-built Sydney Football Stadium, although if they were to face another Sydney club they would be ceding any of the advantage earned by their final ladder position.

The Sharks hope to have PointsBet Stadium back to around a 17,000 capacity by July next year but are one of the clubs who were expecting to receive NSW Government funding for an upgrade to their facilities.

Cronulla have an NRLW side entering the competition next year but, as things stand, will be unable to stage men’s and women’s double headers because of the infrastructure.

This is hilarious. Basically saying our clubs are small time and so better to have spent the money on small venues lol. Here's and idea Pete, how about the NRL getting off its arse and help the clubs fill these amazing stadiums they have been gifted?

“It’s a 42,000-seat stadium,” V’landys said. “You’re going to get your honeymoon period for the next few weeks where it’s going to be full, but after that it’s going to be 10,000 or 15,000 [crowds].
who said he is talking about NRL clubs or RL there , he could just as easily be talking about the Waraturds & Sydney FC , the other tenants of the venue

and as with most things , Vlandys is 100% right

you forgot he led the NRL to a 43 million profit with less income , while spending more on grass roots & clubs then the aflol did , & they lost 43 mill

you seem to forget that a lot lol
nope, but that's got nothing to do with him putting the NRL in court with one of its key stakeholders and now getting into a public slagging match with the NSW premier!

2019 we made a $29mill surplus on $50mill less revenue without stripping $25million out of grassroots and $10mill out of community development. Just saying.

Disagree

morally speaking it would be wrong to move it when the nsw govt has delivered over 80 percent of the promised money

but there’s a contract which the nsw govt breached

vlandys job is to do the best for rugby league

it could cost the 100 million promised for centre of excellence though

sellling the grand final would not only provide a major financial boost it will help grow the sport even in Victoria

You've delivered 80% of a house Metricon.

So "morally" I would be wrong to not accept it

you think he was? lol
Hes not saying anything most of us didnt say at the time (including Fitz the pirate lol), waste of money and Sydney doesn't need Accor and Allianz.
Such a shame NRL didnt take off in Victoria and WA where they know how to do things, rather than in NSW.

He wasn't the chair in 2019 dummy

& as for the NSWRL court case , the NRL funds them , they have a right to insist there are no shady goings on in board elections for that organisation & the NSWRL sticks to its constitution. He is the NRL chair & told the NSWRL to pull its head in or no $$
they told him to piss off , he cut of the coin , they took the NRL to court. They'll lose.

& stuff Peritot , the deal welching worm is getting exactly what he deserves

Again we are talking a regular comp game. If a WA side makes the GF there is no chance RL gets the promotion it deserves.

There is a reason no one is mentioning the AFL states here
The AFL grand final is the week before the NRL grand final. So you would have over a week of free air in Perth.

Well hes the leader of our sport & is quite rightly calling out the hypocrisy of this liberal Govt

I mean , money better spent , but... we will still blow 400 mill on Penrith
credibility out the window right there & Vlandys taking this four eyed clown to task is well over due

Lol vlandys already backing down on NRL 360 because they don't want to breach their contract.

There is not a chance the GF wont be in Sydney and it was silly of him to even suggest it. A real toys out of the cot moment.

begs the question why the leader of our sport didnt get the revised deal in writing, he doesn't come across as such a naïve operator.

Hes simply preparing for the codes day in court , can't really lecture the defendant about breach of contract when you're doing the same yourself

He would have received legal advice that this is the best path forward at this stage. Its all a game now.

Werent all finals moved back to major venues a few years back

And places like Shark Park, Brooky, Kogarah, Leichhardt and Penrith were not permitted to host finals

well Manly hosted a final in 2019 against the sharks in the first week @ brookvale , so no I think its still permitted in some instances in week one only

Allianz was clearly the government pandering to the now defunct scg trust

vlandys is spot on they could’ve saved 400 million and they would’ve redone every suburban ground

Greenberg the yes man was In charge when this got announced

We should be aiming for 30k and 40k stadiums. How’s putting lipstick on suburban pigs a long term solution?
