Quayle has a winery in the hunter

He grew up in Manilla, which is northwest of Tamworth. The Roosters recruited him from there in 1968.

He bought his winery up in the Hunter whilst he was working at the ARL/NSWRL. I believe he moved up there sometime after he resigned from the ARL at the end of 1996.

He should’ve been appointed back on the arlc

other than being a brilliant administrator I’m sure he can name all 17 clubs

Well to be fair and to somewhat back up Wb1234’s point, regions like Canberra, Newcastle and Wollongong are less likely to get funding when compared to big cities like Sydney or Melbourne. Whilst I would like a funding upgrade for Hunter Stadium in reality Canberra should be get funding first (I don’t even think I am being that biased as a Canberra supporter in saying that)

why would NSW give funding for a stadium in the ACT

And we don’t care so much about the ends, hills are fine for us. But decent scoreboards and getting rid of demountables would be a start, and getting the actual precinct sorted should be an election promise from both sides, and would be if we were a swing seat.

fair, it’s hard to defend the club on any front
I have the utmost respect to you Mac and the rest of the knights fans that call it how it is down there.

It's been a shit fight at your club for a long long time, I don't know how you lot put up with it.

As an outsider, I feel the when the Knights were at their best, the squad was about 80% local lads and the rest hard working ring ins, I feel that recipe has been ignored for a long time and the results are what they are. Happy to be corrected if you think this is BS on my behalf.

On the Newy stadium, I've been to the 3 iterations of it, the latest is okay and would be much better if the end hills were turned into seated terraces. And obviously the big screen needs to be sorted out.

The biggest gripe I always had was the location was always pretty shit, there's not much around it. If you were to do it again, would you put it at West Newcastle on the sports fields?

There will be no money for any stadiums in NSW soon with Minns promising a cap on tolls. I’m not sure he realises it can easily be $60 a day and that where his cap sits 😂 good luck Chris.

location is what the hunter sports precinct plan is supposed to fix. The area surrounding the stadium is the last major development envelope in the metro/inner area of Newcastle.

The plan is to redevelop the whole precinct with a proper entertainment centre (our current one is a 35yo leaky tin shed), restaurant and entertainment precinct, new sporting facilities, high density residential, the light rail is supposed to be extended there too. It would effectively be the new “centre” of Newy with thousands of residents and jobs, and well overdue and badly needed community facilities.

they also want to connect it to the gonninans yards the other side of Griffiths road. I can’t overestimate how huge this is for Newcastle.

The business case has been completed and stacks up tremendously well, certainly better than any stadium redevelopment in Sydney.

funding though? Crickets.

it will be storm water drains and muddy paddocks for a while yet it seems.
, because the state government only wants our money, not to actually spend any here.

as for the club, we doomed it to be a basket case when we didn’t extend smithy 15 years ago. It really was a sliding doors moment. And the club has always been too poor and lazy with juniors to make anything of them. We got lucky with a golden generation and haven’t done anything since. Our hyped kids never reach any great heights, and our absolute best end up elsewhere (watch Pezet be a gun next)

I wasn’t making a statement about the NSW government but governments in general.

There’s also the NRL perspective as well.

Are the NRL pressuring governments for funding for regional stadiums or are they content with Sydney. Should they bypass state governments and get the federal government involved?

Fair enough on the Newy thing. Totally agree also that it would get up or considered a chance if Newcastle seats (at least some of them) were swing seats.

Last time I looked we haven't been bailed out financially by the NRL on numerous occasions to stay afloat.

Or won 3 wooden spoons in consecutive years.

I can go on if you want a pissing contest?
I knew you would being up super league lmao

Newcastle did produce the greatest player in the history of rugby league

you remember 2005 origin I trust
Unlike the majority of my QLD brethren, i have far more passion for my home regions NRL team than I do the SOO team. I find it hard to get enthusiastic to support a team that has Brisbane filth in it and fans supporting it.

But yes I'm aware Joey carved the f**k up out of QLD in 2005.

I see a lot of similarity in your two clubs

I’ve been to Newcastle but not Townsville

it was good seeing so many knights flags on peoples houses it felt like a real rugby league town

they even broke our flag when we beat them in the last five minutes lol

that antipathy won’t extend to the dolphins will it ?

Being from Newcastle is a good thing. Obviously I don’t go for the Knights but it is good to see the passion that they have.

Hopefully the financial problems have now long since ceased and I think the area is and will continue to go through a boom. The Knights just need to string some successful seasons
