PREMIER Gladys Berejiklian will upgrade both ANZ and Allianz stadiums and says she is prepared to commit more money than the $1.6 billion that is now set aside for the projects.

On a visit to Tokyo yesterday, Ms Berejiklian said both stadiums could even be rebuilt at the same time, provided sporting codes could find a way to manage their games as work progressed.

In her strongest comments yet on Sydney’s stadium wars, the Premier said Sydney Olympic Park’s ANZ Stadium remained the priority but she would consider starting work on Moore Park’sdilapidated Allianz Stadium before the March 2019 election.

She said she was determined to push ahead because the presence of world-class facilities “means jobs, it means tourism”.

“I want to bring things forward,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Andrew Clennell: Time to get Allianz Stadium up to scratch

“The only thing that would prevent me from doing that with Allianz is the content issue. If we can find an innovative way to deal with the content issue — and it does require further discussion with the codes — then that’s the big challenge for us.”

Estimates for the ANZ work range from $900 million to $1.6 billion and a rebuild of Allianz for $400 million to $800 million. The Daily Telegraph revealed last week it would take $137 million just to bring Allianz up to scratch on safety.

Ms Berejiklian said she wasn’t “wedded” to the $1.6 billion price for the work as it didn’t even account for construction of other stadiums.

“I’d love to see an outer Western Sydney stadium,” she said.

“I’d love to see indoor stadia ... the 1.6 is what we allocated at the time for this term but there’s nothing stopping me from improving on that if I can because we are in a strong financial position ... Having said that, I do have a keen eye on the dollar and want to make sure you get the best bang for your buck.

“I’ll do what’s best, I’m not wedded by what envelope we’ve created. “If we have the opportunity to look outside that envelope we will.”

MS Berejiklian said investing in stadiums could make Sydney “the global events capital of the region”.

“We’ve got the International Convention Centre. We’re starting to see soccer matches we’ve never seen before; I want Sydney to be the regional capital for major events and we have the potential to do that.”

Ms Berejiklian is on a five-day trade mission to Japan and South Korea to meet potential investors for Sydney’s infrastructure boom.

“We have an infrastructure investment boom the likes of which we’ve never seen ... I want to make sure it’s there for the next generation of projects,” she said.

“The pitch to people is NSW not only has impressive infrastructure now but we’re wanting you to invest in future projects.

So how can they f**k this up? Somehow they all become "multi-purpose", or the ticket prices go up to $50+ for the cheapest seat for a regular game, or the stadiums feel even more cavernous... I'm too jaded.

I love the " Ms Berejiklian said both stadiums could even be rebuilt at the same time, provided sporting codes could find a way to manage their games as work progressed" bit. I mean if both stadiums are being rebuilt, it would mean they are out of commission at the same time. You are not going to be able to get the Waratahs, Sydney FC, Roosters, Rabbitohs, Bulldogs to play out of either the SCG or Sportless for 3 years that is just too stupid to contemplate.

Could easily work.

Waratahs - SCG (they don't want to go west anyway)

Roosters - Central Coast, Adelaide & SCG

Sydney FC - likely a roving commission between Kogarah, Cronulla, Leichhardt, NSO

And the western Sydney teams will have the new parramatta stadium, no need to go to spotless.

I didn't know the Rabbitohs were a western Sydney team ;)

Luke Foley taking the "but schools and hospitals" line on facebook.

That old chestnut.

1.6billion spread over all the schools and hospitals will do little. Such cheap politics.

NSW health budget is already around $22 billion per annum.

School budget wouldn't be much less.

Viable?

You really f**king want to argue with a team that has averaged 17k in it's 22 year existence over a team that would barely able to exist other than the fact ita clientelè relies on pokie machines to earn a living??? You've had your fair share of public monies.

Let's not forget In that 22 year period there was quite a few lean perioda for us but hey, you Sydney fans would rather argue over teams crowds that involved fans from 5kms away whereas NQ has zero help to bolster their figures but will still carry the torch for the game regardless.

We've never had a home ground that was worthy of our existence, it's about time we finally got it.

Anyone that argues can go EAD.

Besides the absolute truth that the cowboys deserve to play out of an awesome stadium because of the reasons you mention, I reckon financially the stadium will be a huge boost to tourist dollars too.

IMO the uptick in away fans making the pilgrimage will be significant once the new stadium is in place, much like what occurred for the Storm once they got their new home.

The cowboys should look into partnering with an airline or 2 to include free tickets to the cows game with any flight to townsville.
