The 1983 season was supposed to be the last seasons for both the Newtown Jets and the western Suburbs Magpies. Newtown moved some games out to Campbelltown, and their plan was to have a 1 year hiatus from the NSWRL and come back in 1985 as the Newtown-Campbelltown Jets. They had their plans all lined up to move to Orana Park, with the name change, new jersey strip and everything worked out. The plan fell apart when they could not find a buyer for the Newtown Leagues Club, as the proceeds from the sale would have allowed them to clear their debts (as they owed many players moneys for the current and previous seasons, which they had not fully paid due to financial pressures) and then finance the move. The move was officially called off in 1984.
In anticipation of the move to Campbelltown, the Jets played their last 6 home games of the 1983 season at Campbelltown.
Wests, by comparison, had a financially viable leagues club behind them, so they instigated court action which lead the NSWRL to agree to retain them in the comp. When the deal between Newtown and the Campbelltown-Liverpool JRL fell though in 1984, Wests began negotiations with the junior league which came to fruition in 1987, which is when they relocated to Campbelltown.
