Is it? Have you seen the a-leagues crowd averages? Storm beat Victory easily, and city and united are even further off

Soccer's popular everywhere, not unique to Melbourne, and more of their fans follow the premier league from afar than the a league

I would have thought it's capacity too small for FIFAs WC standards, even for the women
The A-league would be as big as the NRL and AFL if somebody could convince average soccer fans and the eurosnobs to support local teams. It'd be even bigger than the NRL and AFL if they could come up with a way to convert participation numbers into supporters as well.

Soccer is caught in an interesting catch-22 where the eurosnobs won't support the A-league because it isn't of a high enough standard by their estimation, but the A-league needs their support to have access to the resources to significantly improve standards.

They want Australian soccer to be a copy of the big European leagues, but they're not willing to cooperate to work towards that goal or make the compromises necessary, they just want it to pop into existence fully formed. They're their own worst enemies, and it's kind of sad actually.

Given that they are playing at Hindmarsh, I don't think so.

This would have been a shit place for the Storm to play anyway, it's in the middle of nowhere, has no transport links and no facilities.

Luckily, the stadium will never get built without serious involvement from government agencies, of which there is no political will or serious business case.

Talk of the Raiders & Brumbies being relocated to Manuka while GIO is torn down & redone

positives are the new venue would get built more quickly
negatives are the smaller capacity ( 15K) & it being an oval & a large one at that so a shit viewing experience for up to 3 years

Not in Melbourne. Beside my two Poms mates, I don’t know anyone who follows any O/S soccer. NBA, yes. Soccer, no.

You're kidding right ?

theres been about 10 games at the MCG in the last 10 years involving OS soccer giants & all have drawn over 90K fans

the one involving Real Madrid againt ..idk .. someone ( i don't follow soccer )
drew 99,500

yep , plenty of interstate visitors , but 60K locals too at a minimum

In winter they cap capacity at 13,550 (which is the number of seats). Assume they don’t sell GA on the hill due to weather. Capacity is around 15k for cricket.

The 2013 master plan includes staged increases to 16k then 20k seats. Perhaps that gets done before GIO is a rebuilt.

They are not doing a business case on the Bankstown line.
That is well under construction. They will continue to complete that construction but they are doing an inquiry into completing it in a more fiscally positive way due to cost blowouts.

There were two lines in Western Sydney where Labor cancelled business cases that the Libs had promised.

1. Westmead to WSA.
2. Bradfield to Leppington.

There are two other business cases that the Libs made an election promise on that Labor are going ahead with.

1. Bradfield to Macarthur.
2. Tallawong to Schofields and then onto St Marys.
Hard to keep up with all the public works

I was driving near the airport and all the new freeways and tunnels is so confusing and apparently they are all linked between m4 m5 and new m6

That means nothing here. They are special events. I have been twice to those events games and I hate soccer. SOO also packs out the MCG, and 200k AFL/Storm fans go to games every week.

Soccer here was big here when we only had Victory. For a few years they were bigger than Storm and even a few AFL clubs. It has been a steady decline as once second, and third teams came in. Average A-League crowd this season is around 7k. Also - if you lions at any of the government sport surveys, soccer is much bigger in Sydney than anywhere else in Australia.

AFL and NRL are both having their best ever seasons - we have a sport duopoly in winter. RU and soccer are dying steadily as spectator sports.

The A league has been in steady decline , not the sport
there is still considerably interest across the country by as Dane described them " Euro Snobs " in the sport when the giants come out

I wouldn't travel to the front gate to watch it myself
but
there are plenty that do

A League crowds are down all over the country. The Brisbane team plays out of Redcliffe as their crowds are so tiny. Soccer is still big though, especially in Syd and Mel. You would have to walk around with your eyes closed and fingers in your ears not to notice this.

Is that the one GWS uses? I mean they get 20-25k every time they play there ,based on their fertile imagination.

So did someone just say SA is paying $24m a year for garter round ?

Makes the below look pretty shit

The Government of Queensland paid approximately $2.1 million per year for the event to be held in the city in 2019 and 2020.

OK I just saw this. We are so pathetic and then we wonder why they are always so ahead on these matters. Nothing else to say really.
