Wasn't Mr Fluffy a key reason for the delay of a new Canberra stadium?
a key reason Barr used , but Mr Fluffy didn't stop that ridiculous 1 billion plus light rail project linking a few suburbs in Gunghalin with civic & the next ridiculous 1 billion plus phase civic to Woden from going ahead

so
the money is there regardless

Barr wants his legacy to be a rail network. He’ll move heaven and earth to make that legacy happen. And he’s got the full support of the Greens to do it, who he needs to stay in power.

Everything else is just noise to him.

Was Peter Redraghead FitzSimons among the crowd of protestors? Oh wait it's not NRL.
$375m funding by Tassie Govt is a huge sum for a small single purpose football stadium.Gil must have done some genuine a*se licking to get both Govts involved.

Meantime in the ACT I've learnt Barr was a former rl fan during the Wests/Terry Lamb days. Then when Super league did their clusters*ck he lost a lot of interest and has become a fanatical Hawthorn fan since mid 90s.
His Govt pay nows an $2.85m pa (an increase)to the GWS gimps for the privilege to play 3 games each year.

IMO I can't see Barr putting his heart and soul into a new rectangular stadium in Canberra, despite it for 3 rectangular codes. He craps on about not filling Bruce, yet the facilities are 20th Century ordinary and the exposure to the extreme cold is blatantly obvious.
I wouldn't expect anyone including PR to sit out there, when its 1 degree.I feel the cold watching when it's like that.

Just a dreamer's thought out of left field. If V'Landys has a success in Vega and gets the betting mobs on board ,and they make X$M pa ,I'd be putting that aside for new stadium contributions. And on that basis a share of a new stadium's revenue.

Would this happen in Canberra?

I remember there was similar outrage (on a smaller scale) when the Adelaide Oval redevelopment was proposed in 2009, then again the people of Adelaide are very protective of their heritage and parklands compared to other cities in Australia. As for that happening in Canberra? There might be a few unhappy people but unlikely to be on the scale of Hobart as everyone knows that Canberra Stadium now is a windswept, outdated venue for the nations capital. When I went last month, I thought I was back at old Waverley Park in Melbourne, except the seats at Canberra are closer to the action than both Waverley and Accor

His logic is bizarre. The venue is outdated and unattractive to a new generation of punters coming through so he refuses to build a fit for purpose stadium to meet 2023 standards? Wierd.

Is this the end of spending hundreds of millions on stadiums?

Labor govt was elected with basically a no money for stadiums policy.
Huge protests in Tasmania and 2/13 members of govt quit over it.
Redevelopment of Gabba is unpopular but gets a pass because it's for the olympics.

Was thinking the same thing. Tough times since the pandemic and people are pissed with media feeding the frenzy. We won’t see any new rectangular stadia for a while or until a successful WC bid.

That’s been my point all along and why I’ve thrown the Tassie situation in. Covid has seen a shift in priorities and the national housing and rent crisis makes investing in stadiums seem hedonistic at best. The Tassie stadium is utter nonsense in terms of cost and need. Canberra needs and deserves a new stadium but the debacle down here has fecked any chance up in my view.

This is extremely accurate for somebody that hasn't lived here. I'm genuinely impressed.

The only things that I'd add are that over 50% of the ACT's population are immigrants from other parts of the country or overseas and their children, and they're present throughout Canberra's society not just in the APS. A lot of them come for uni, and there's been a concerted effort by Labour to give Canberra the image of being a 'university town' similar to the sort you see in America and the UK, like Berkley or Oxford for example.

I can't prove this, but I think it's more than fair to say that locals (i.e. Canberra Born and raised) are overrepresented in both the Raiders and Brumbies support base, but that the same can't be said for GWS or the other FIFO AFL clubs we've had in the past.

The other thing is that the vast majority of the people whom moved to Canberra when it was first founded were public servants from Melbourne, and they brought their culture with them. Pre 1940/50s they represented the majority of the population and a lot of their descendants continue to live in a sort of counterculture to this day. In other words, even within the minority local population there's an extremely strong contingent of AFL supporters.
So IF your argument is right then afl not having a team there when they are strong there would indicate they have a low opinion of the market and perhaps the nrl should’ve looked elsewhere

I would say league dominates and once the raiders grand final win and you would struggle to find any fumblers

That explains his antipathy towards rugby league

Is the 300m for Penrith confirmed? I seem to remember the labor candidate being against it and Minns doesn't want to spend money on stadiums. Is a contract signed?

Would this happen in Canberra?

Yes, but probably not on the same scale.

Most people in Canberra are too apathetic to put that much effort in.

Argument? I didn't make an argument in that post...

'Low opinion' is very strange framing as well.

The AFL doesn't have a 'low opinion' of Canberra, they just saw better business opportunities elsewhere, and it's very hard to deny that the Eagles, Crows, Fremantle, Port, and eventual Brisbane Lions, were better expansion options than the original Canberra bid or the bid in the 90s. There was simply way more money to be made in those larger metro markets.

Many would argue that Canberran and Tasmanian sides would have been a more sustainable options than GWS and the Suns, but it's pretty obvious that the AFL's priorities were different with GWS and the Suns. They're treating both as long term investments, rather than looking to set up clubs that would be reasonably sustainable as quickly as possible.
I would say league dominates and once the raiders grand final win and you would struggle to find any fumblers
You'd be wrong.

I don't know what to tell you other than to say that you're completely and utterly wrong.

Probably because there's a lot of anti-RL and anti-sports public servants living there
The average public servant isn't anti-RL or sport lol.

Obviously the economy is rough at the moment, and cost of living has been becoming an issue in Canberra for a long time, but in normal times they're reasonably well paid and are looking for things to spend their loose change on. Members of the public service would make up a majority of the core audience of basically every sport and event in Canberra.

The weird and ignorant stereotypes in here are hilariously stupid.
