As to the light rail, if you think it will be the panacea to the area's transport problems when their are big crowds, read today's media reports about why the inner west light rail can't run more services than it currently does to meet demand. I very much suspect similar issues will plague the eastern suburbs light rail too.

Light rail is an absolute farce. I've yet to see a single explanation as to how it will be able to carry any more passengers than just chucking on a bunch of extra buses and a couple extra bus lanes. Will not make a lick of difference.

The only solution that would have worked was a metro line. Yeah it costs a buttload more, but better to pay a high cost for a service that will work for the next 50 years than save some money but get exactly zero benefit.

old article, but similar to the issue many clubs and supporters are finding with that dump in Sydney's Olympic Park

this comment is so true with regard to ANZZZZZZZZZZZZ stadium
"The point of going to football instead of watching on television is to smell the action. Sit too low and you will struggle to see the other end; too far back and it feels like you are in a different postcode. You drift off. You leave early. You decide that was a waste of money. You stay at home next time."

Interesting. the Buffalo Bills are actually the only NFL team that play in New York, the NY Giants and NY Jets play in New Jersey.

New York is also a state.

The Giants and Jets market is the Greater New York Metropolitan Area which encompasses an area within 3 states - New York, New Jersey & Connecticut. Meadowlands it's just across the hudson river from manhattan and statistically part of the Greater New York Metro Area. it's not like it's in the part of New Jersey near Pennsylvannia.

The Bills market is upstate New York, as well as areas on the other side of the border in Ontario, Canada.

IMO for ANZ, demolish the entire lower bowl, and one side of the stadium. Then create a new rectangular lower bowl, and place it closer to the remaining top tier. Then build a new 2nd and 3rd level wrapping around the new 3 sides, similar to Suncorp.

Surely this could be done for under $900m

not in Australia, and particularly not in Sydney. it's the worst place to build anything, especially with public money. subbies scab as much as they can, and contractors then pass it on and add more scabbing to their bill. the public service approve without question....afterall, it's not someone's specific money.

building industry here is a disgrace really

Yes this should be the area that Super league target. Get a hold of the Canadian Lotto money to have a 'conference' in their super league completion. See Toronto wolf pack. They need two/three extra teams even maybe one in Buffalo.... call it the North American conference...

http://www.9news.com.au/national/20...cret-anz-and-allianz-stadium-upgrade-proposal

Sydney's stadium wars have taken a dramatic turn, with ANZ and Allianz Stadiums potentially receiving only glorified make-overs after Premier Gladys Berejiklian pulled the pin on a secret $3 billion proposal.

The NSW government's stadiums policy has now been described as being in "paralysis".

The premier met NRL boss Todd Greenberg yesterday evening, with the league heavily expecting to be told the government was prepared to completely redevelop both stadiums, as well as throw money at Pepper Stadium in Penrith and upgrade facilities in regional areas.
9NEWS understands Ms Berejiklian told Mr Greenberg she is willing to spend $900 million on upgrading ANZ Stadium.

Mr Greenberg is understood to have been shocked, expressing to Ms Berejiklian that the NRL wants a world class venue and they won't get it for that price.

The arrangement with former premier Mike Baird was the NRL would only guarantee games if a "world class stadium" was built.

"We've discussed the needs of the NRL, they are one of many stakeholders," NSW Sports Minister Stuart Ayres said
It is understood the business case for ANZ Stadium redevelopment had a range of options costing between $900 million and $1.6 billion.

The cheaper option is widely regarded in sporting circles to be a substandard outcome.

The upper tier of the stadium will stay where it is, rather than come in closer to the action.

Ms Berejiklian announced on her trade trip to Tokyo last week that she will "spend what we need to" to attract big global events, like the 2023 Women's FIFA World Cup.

"If we have to spend more, we will," Ms Berejiklian told 9NEWS.

Mr Ayres has presented the premier with a plan for a more than $3 billion spend over the next 10 years

They are copping more and more grief over their stadium developments while hospital budgets continue to be cut.

I don't mind leaving top tier, with a real steep gradient of 3 tiers below it or something..
If the first couple of tiers besides the top tier all got moved in with a steep gradient, the top tier would be that far back it wouldnt see the game past the top of the middle tiers.

f**k it.
It's time Rugby League started punishing the NSW Government. They spend our money on flirting with AFL and clubs that no one wants and refuse to spend anything on the facilities used by the top 3 sports in the state.

I am all for RL's big games being played in Sydney but it's time they were held to account.
Every other city in Australia has a beautiful, modern stadium (or more than 1) on their doorstep. We have a white elephant in the back of Homebush and they won't even give it the upgrade it needs.
Other state governments pay big money for big events, NSW shafts us for the World Cup. We haven't had a decent Kangaroos game in years.

The NRL should immediately put the Grand Final and NSW 2nd home games up for bid.
