The 'real' fans.

As happy as I am to have a patch of uneven grass to stand on I don't really like the idea of $300 million on a refurb.

They can deposit it in the Panthers bank account and when the next state government gets voted in we will lobby for the extra $150 million needed.
Or Panthers could use some of its pokie money to add to the $300mill and build a proper stadium? There's a novel idea!

Build what you can for $300m, but make it part of a plan that can be added to to complete a full new stadium. If you get a good new good covered stand on each side with corporate/broadcast/club facilities included p acing the end hills untouched, they can easily be completed later. Beats chucking it in the bank and waiting.
And forget the idea of having some “iconic” “landmark” stadium. It’s a suburban ground ffs. Make it functional, that’s what gets the punters in every few weeks. It doesn’t need to be pretty, it’s not some huge tourist showpiece.

It's a great result if they end up with something like McDonald Jones. Who cares if there's hills at the ends? Build them in later if there's funding and a need

I was at Penrith last week for the first time in ages

the cbd is still fairly undeveloped

you could see theyv staryed doing medium rise apartments but nothing like parra

it was so long too started near high st and Westfield was down the other end

hence the issue with playing at Parra.

Most people work outside of the area

Sadly our game scheduling doesn't help. Thought I'd take a look and its 25km for me to get to HBF Park and 30km to Optus. Neither I would consider a big deal getting to, by car or public transport (not that you can get to Optus by car).
But I do get why people in Penrith may not want to travel 30km on a Thursday night or 6pm Friday, especially as there is a weird Sydney mentality about having to cross more than two suburbs!
I was at commbank for the near sell out eels v Panthers game last year. Seemed a lot of Panthers fans there so I guess they can do it occasionally.
Public transport outside of peak hours ie when a game ends at 10-11pm is very poor

No one flocks anywhere on a Thurs night! Its a dumb time to play prof sport.
The clubs should make it more attractive to go out on a school night by reducing ticket prices, heck make it $1 for kids, and having sponsored give aways at the game, and the NRL should insist on a 7pm KO so families can get home at a reasonable time.

I've even stopped watch Thursday night footy altogether now unless Parra have been stuck with it. Shocking time to kick off a game off footy too. 8 Fu*ken O'clock! What the f**k!!!

The ARLC/NRL are kidding themselves.

Seriously. What a joke decision. $300m and we get patch ups and hills.

What we should do now is Penrith and the ARLC should go and lobby hard to the Feds(especially since Albo is such a RL fan) for the other $150m or so and make an argument that is persuasive enough since the Feds are willing to help fund the ridiculous Tassie Stadium project.

$309m from the State and $150 from the Feds should be enough to build it properly and on the Paceway site where it should be.

What is the ARLC doing for ffs and the Panthers too for that matter?! They should be going hard on this like the AFL do. They never give up. They just keep on working over all the Governments until they get what they want by hook or by crook. We just fall over at the first cheap offering that is given to us. Pathetic!!!

Where is the fight in us and the behind the scenes smarts, cunning and savvy? Only in RL. Weak as piss and we get the crumbs while the AFL just keep getting all the best stadiums in every city to be theirs. Look at Brisbane now too. They will be the beneficiaries of the best new stadium in the heart of a RL State.

So AFL have or will have the best stadiums in Victoria, WA, SA, QLD, TAS, and the iconic SCG in NSW and when Canberra finally get their stadium in 10-20 years time what are the odds by then that the AFL will have finally put a team there too and demand the new stadium is built multi purpose too. Odds on for sure since they will have expanded to every part of Aus by then and that would probably be their second last dot on the map with Darwin only then left after that.

They will have Australia all mapped out while we are still primarily just a Eastern Seaboard sport and a NZ oddity.

Game over man. Like I have said before they have already won the war, it is just a matter of by how much now. Their revenue will just keep getting bigger and bigger and the gulf between Us and them will just keep growing and all the RL people will just keep making excuses and be in denial.

We just don't have the same fight or smarts. They lobby 24/7 and have been doing it for decades and seduce the pollies with gifts and wine and dine and game day experiences and and and and...

We just barely have started to and we still don't do it well. We just threaten them and extort them with our GF location. That will only get you so far and we are now seeing the fruits to that strategy.

Even if we finally put a team in Perth it will be to little to late by the time we do. They, whoever they are(maybe Pirates) will still be playing out of a sh*thole stadium in a hostile city and will be lucky to average around 15-18K once the initial hype and curiosity dies down. While the main attraction in town is playing in what at present is the best modern state of the art 60K stadium in front of sellout crowds with a membership waiting list of decades.

Way to go ARLC...Winning!

I know the ratings are favourable this season, but that won't last forever. People die and the next generation will be looking for glitz and hype. The AFL will and is the biggest show in every town now on a regular basis on game day. They will be perceived as the winners and the kiddies love to follow winners and the mommies love to follow the sexier men too as so many have pointed out to me over the years. RL players by enlarge are still seen as oafs. AFL and Soccer players by women are seen as sex symbols and the sports they play are seen by them as way more kiddy friendly too.

The perfect storm has been brewing for years and it is going to deliver its final blow in the decade after this and hold up its arms as the undisputed sports champ of Australia in victory. The sad thing though is there won't be all that many RL supporters who really care because the majority of us Aussies will be to busy watching their favorite team playing AFL.

P.S. 3 or 4 million RL supporters won't matter much when the rest of the country tune in to watch ping pong of the aerial variety.

P.P.S The woman's side of the sport(NRLW) may just save the game somewhat, but that is a post for another day.

I actually read all this and you bring up some good points. We accept mediocrity too often, 100% we do. I'm not sure AFL is going to take over the country like you say... Firstly the game seems very anglo to me, a lot like Cricket in this country and therefor doesn't represent modern multicultural Australia. Yes some of their teams have a token African or Muslim but they stick out like a sore thumb amongst all the privileged Aussie as vegemite white kids. I also think AFL games are too long for the average millennial/zoomer attention span.

I know the current cultural trends are to move away from brutal/physical sports but I think its in our nature to want to watch gladiatorial contests. There will always be a place for them - just look at the explosion in popularity of UFC over the last decade with only minimal marketing in this country. Also one of the biggest names in that sport is a League tragic who played in the Dragons system.

If I had a $ for every time someone has said RL is dying lol

AFL may well remain a bigger sport than RL in Aus, but we shall see what the next 10 years bring. If we have balls and go to 20 clubs with genuine national footprint there is no reason we cant make up a lot of ground.

Do agree though that we have been generally terrible in lobbying and influencing in comparison to them, especially for stadium funding and tv deals.

NFL puts their game of the week in that same timeslot, So it isn't going anywhere

NFL also has 52 players squads on game days, with unlimited interchange, and specialist offence, defence and special teams. Also it has a 40 second play clock, multiple time outs per team each half, and a "2 minute warning" for an obligatory TV add at the end of each half. We going to adopt those too because of the NFL having had them for ages?

You can come up with a better argument than that surely?

The argument is TV stations want a game on Thursdays because they rate ....hence they're valuable to them & will pay well for them
