It shouldn't be this hard, but unfortunately it is.Auckland needs an allianz size and quality level stadium in middle of city. It shouldn’t be this hard!
Would you need a boutique stadium? surely union, league and soccer could use the main stadium? It shouldn't be this hard, but unfortunately it is.
Even though Auckland has gone from a number of historic councils to consolidate into ONE unitary authority, there's still a lot of "legacy issues" that they're struggling with.
They really need to accept that whatever decision is made, SOMEONE will be pissed-off.
I think a new build downtown & either fully ditching Eden Park or downgrading it to community/boutique ground is the go.. and I'm not alone in that. (Downtown stadium 50-60k - new build, Eden Park downsized boutique stadium 20-25k - sell off surplus land, new cricket ground somewhere else maybe 30-40k would be ideal IMO as cricket just doesn't pull HUGE crowds)
BUT the Eden Park Trust & their constant appeals to tradition are hard to cut-through, and then you have Cricket to try and satisfy because they would likely need to relocate.
Scheduling. If Union, League, Soccer & concerts can't all be accommodated in the one stadium, it makes sense to have something that can be used as a back-up/timing clash venue - plus allowing maintenance & upkeep "downtimes" for the main stadium.Would you need a boutique stadium? surely union, league and soccer could use the main stadium?
Selling off the land of the current stadiums would surely go a long way to paying for a 50k new stadium and 30k cricket ground?
It’s an embarrassment that NZ doesn’t have a 40k Suncorp type stadium in Auckland. Wellington is a cricket ground. By 2025 when Christchurch gets its stadium, the South Island will have 2 stadiums which are better anything in the NIMeanwhile in Auckland, Auckland Council kicks the tyres on stadium proposals AGAIN... (sigh)

Come to think of it, there's 3 candidates for that - a reduced Eden Park, Mount Smart, or North Harbour. Each with pros and cons.
[edit]. Scrub North Harbour (current capacity 25k) , looks like there's a fair chance it'll be scrapped for a 6000-8000 seat stadium, as it's main - and pretty near only - tenant North Harbour rugby union (National Provincial Championships, some club games) gets very small crowds.
North Harbour Rugby pushing for smaller stadium if current one is bulldozed
The land North Harbour sits on is worth about $100 million.www.nzherald.co.nz
Didn’t he also say LO wasnt fit for nrl without an upgrade, then announced increasing games there lol?Tigers CEO
“It’s bordering on negligent to think that we don’t have female change rooms at these grounds. This is just unacceptable"
They then decide to play more games there.
I think that was our glorious chairman. They share the stupid around.Didn’t he also say LO wasnt fit for nrl without an upgrade, then announced increasing games there lol?
