It's also very a timely reminder of the PNG wankery.

One government can giveth, and the very next one can taketh away.

Mate if the PNG $25m Government grant per year happens, there would/should be binding contracts signed before hand for a specified period of future years. If I was the ARLC/NRL I would insist on at least 50 years guaranteed funding and seeing this is a strategic geopolitical move by our Government and in terms of these types of things a very cheap one at that, then I don't see this being a major request/demand at all.

We would literally be bribing the people of PNG to be and stay our friends over China what it is trying to do over there. Cheap as chips as it goes for these types of international manoeuvrings. Also I love how we are the beneficiary of this and the AFL can't ever be a part of such a thing. It must be infuriating them and they would be turning green with envy. Free money for nothing. You beauty and we get to propagate a totally new market and whole new nation of people for nought to be part of the ARLC/NRL family.

New junior systems and pathways, players, mega mining sponsors and fans all on the Governments dime and big business. Yee ha!

Yeah, one of the staff at the Stadium pool and gym told me the parking is going to be on the grassed areas for the members while the new parking area is being built, that was the day before you posted about the legislation going through NSW parliament that was stopping it, originally the plan for members parking was they were going to be able to park at EQ/Fox for so many hours and a shuttle bus was going to run back and fourth but that must of fell through with the announcement of the grass area still being used.

So assuming PNG is the 18th team, does Santos stadium in PM get a rebuild or refurb ?

Current capacity is just under 15K, I think I would like to see that get increased to 25K+. With new corporate area's, new roofs, broadcast lighting etc.

That would be an incredible misuse of money, given the realities of life in PNG.

I would also say "corporates" isn't going to be thing in PNG, unless RL is keen to have people eating prawn sandwiches whilst people are starving to death next door.

it’s PNG, you barely need any corporate areas and you don’t really need roofs as Port Moresby has a dry climate and the locals aren’t paying much for tickets and expecting luxury. Lighting is already fine. Just add as many seats for the least $$ possible and any necessary broadcast facilities if not already there.

Would the current lighting be suitable for TV? I cant recall seeing one game being held there during the night?

Mainly going on the available still photos and the appearance of the lighting towers themselves, they look like they’re broadcast quality from what I can tell. Doubt they’d require much to bring up to standard if they’re not already.

There was a proposal to go to 25k but imo that’s not big enough

should be 40k

also current ground has poor security and they were talking about an athletes type village for visiting teams for safety

would actually make good sense to attach a hotel complex to the ground so away fans could have a way of attending games with less security concerns, as well as for somewhere for visiting teams and officials to stay

Yeh pretty much this, they could fill in the corners and maybe put another tier on one of the sidelines. Should be a relatively cheap (by stadium standards) way to get it to 25k+.

Alternatively there is Sir Hubert Murray stadium, still half under construction from what I can tell but has a higher listed capacity. Looks like Vipers play there in Digicel cup.

I don’t know the layout of Port Moresby but from the map it’s obvious they’re in very different areas of the city, with Sir Hubert Murray being near the waterfront and downtown areas and Santos being further inland in a suburban area closer to the airport. I’d imagine the location would play into the choice of which venue to use too.

Yeh I’m just going off google maps and google searches, no idea which would work better. There is also Sir John Guise stadium in a retail area, that is 15k too but has an athletics track, there is a smaller “football stadium” on the same block that could be used if they’re looking at building from scratch.

At least they’ll have backup options if/when their main choice gets upgraded.

I wouldnt have thought it would be easy to add an additional 10k to effectively scaffolding stands? Maybe our govt's largesse will pay for a proper built new main stand of 10k seats?

I doubt many away fans would go to games in PNG.

It’s not like going to Bali or Phuket. It’s a genuinely very dangerous place. DFAT basically has a standing ‘reconsider your need to travel’ warning.

Would anyone really want to spend a ton of money to go and lock yourself in a hotel next to a stadium?
