Scheduling. If Union, League, Soccer & concerts can't all be accommodated in the one stadium, it makes sense to have something that can be used as a back-up/timing clash venue - plus allowing maintenance & upkeep "downtimes" for the main stadium.

Come to think of it, there's 3 candidates for that - a reduced Eden Park, Mount Smart, or North Harbour. Each with pros and cons.

[edit]. Scrub North Harbour (current capacity 25k) , looks like there's a fair chance it'll be scrapped for a 6000-8000 seat stadium, as it's main - and pretty near only - tenant North Harbour rugby union (National Provincial Championships, some club games) gets very small crowds.

Sell off Eden Park, it’s on super expensive residential land. Keep Mt Smart as the #2 ground, it’s location in an industrial area means it wouldn’t get anywhere near as much if sold off and its current configuration would only require maintenance and maybe some incremental upgrades.
downgrade North Harbour to an 8-9K suburban facility and convert Western Springs for cricket.

Leaves Auckland without a big stadium for union tests no chance

Tigers CEO
“It’s bordering on negligent to think that we don’t have female change rooms at these grounds. This is just unacceptable"

They then decide to play more games there.
To be fair the girls play at commbank too, and probably play at LO when the mens team aren't there, so really no cross over, but it would get ugly lf the NRL sheduling fks it up, and they do have to share at some stage

Yep, that makes a whole lot of sense - getting a big rectangular stadium in the city centre (hopefully with a 20k-ish "club mode" for smaller pulling games), Mount Smart as a mid-sized backup/clash venue, and North Harbour replaced with a small venue for their local NPC team & club rugby.

Cricket has needs of it's own, and they shouldn't be compromised with union/league/soccer requirements, so again you're on-point with the need for a dedicated cricket oval, and Western Springs seems like the perfect setting.

Seems The Tigers are still trying hard to get funding for Leichhardt. Also pushing for an upgrade of Campbelltown.

I'll bet it will be dependent on the Council getting the NSW or Australian Government to pay for it. Chances of that happening in the current climate? 0.001%.

No Commbank for Wests next year so it's probably inevitable.

I assume @SpaceMonkey meant sell Eden Park and use that money to build a new stadium in a better location like Waterfront.

Looks pretty spot on to me, 60k new city stadium, 30k Mt Smart with some upgrades, 10k North Harbour and 30k oval for the cricket.
Mt smart needs upgrades too

imo if they do go with a brand new build the wahs will have to give up mt smart

Bears are delusional lol. $11mill was going to get ns oval to nrl standard? Yeh nah.

Confirmation from the NSW government a $11 million funding injection for North Sydney Oval promised during the March election campaign would not be honoured has all but narrowed the race for the NRL's 18th franchise to one candidate.

The North Sydney Bears have been vocal about its desire to return to the top level of Australian rugby league virtually since the failure of the Northern Eagles venture at the end of 2002. They last competed as the Bears in 1999.

But the funding — which the club believes would have brought the ground up to NRL standard — was an election promise from then-premier Dominic Perrottet, and was never supported by the Labor opposition.

So, I've had a look at the Leichhardt Oval Master Plan. Now assuming that Inner West Council could get the funds to do everything on their list, pretty much the upgraded venue would have:

- New Northern Stand with 1,580 seats
- Increase in Lower Bowl capacity would increase from 4,061 seats to 4,835
- Keith Barnes Stand would increase from 262 seats to 280
- Western Grandstand would hold between 1,977 (current capacity) and 2,200
- 6 corporate boxes would be added to the new Western Grandstand

So at best it would add around 1,000 new seats (1,015 assuming the Western Grandstand can't grow anymore than 2,200), lose some of the standing room around the northern end, and see the venue capacity remain under 20,000.

That's not to say work shouldn't be done on the ground, especially as a community asset, but it's questionable whether the full investment they are chasing is worthwhile to bring it up to NRL standard.

The SMH article which makes it sound like everything could be done for around 100m is incorrect. The breakdown of costs, as outlined in the Master Plan is:

- Inner West Rugby League Museum : 1.25m
- New Northern Stand : 21m
- Upgraded Lower Bowl seating : 4.9m
- New 2 Level Car Park : 12.3m
- General Improvements : 5m

- Moderate Upgrade to Western Grandstand : 33.4m
- Full Upgrade to Western Grandstand : 98.3m

That adds up to over 140m, which to me makes it even less likely that they'll be able to secure the needed funding. The proposed pictures do look nice...

Stadium Rationalisation Plan for Sydney clubs to maximise crowds:

Penrith - 12 home games at New Penrith Stadium 30k, 2 away games at New Liverpool Stadium, 1 away game at Parramatta

Parramatta - 12 games at current stadium, 1 away game at Penrith, 2 away games at Liverpool

Roosters - 9 home games at SFS, 4 away games at SFS, 3 home games at neutral venues (new markets)

Rabbitohs - 9 home games at SFS, 4 away games at SFS, 3 home games at neutral venues (new markets)

Sea Eagles - 9 home games at Brookvale, 3 home games at Gosford, 3 away games at Gosford

Bulldogs - 11 home games at New Liverpool Stadium 35k, 1 away game at Liverpool, 1 away game at Parramatta, 1 away game at Penrith, 1 home game at neutral venue (new market)

Tigers - 7 home games New Liverpool Stadium 35k, 1 away game at Liverpool, 4 home games at SFS, 4 away games at SFS, 1 home game at neutral venue (new market)

Dragons - 8 home games Wollongong, 4 home games at SFS, 4 away games at SFS

Sharks - 12 home games at either a New Perth or Adelaide Stadium 30k, at least 8 away games in Sydney at other Sydney clubs' venues

Under this plan all the Western Sydney based teams play each other twice and all Eastern/Northern Sydney teams play each twice. Plus other major rivalry games can also be played twice.

It's also very a timely reminder of the PNG wankery.

One government can giveth, and the very next one can taketh away.
