The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

9 clubs in Sydney is on no way comparable to 4 big clubs in SEQ spread far enough apart to have their own turf, fan base and if they choose stadium.

How dare the Dolphins want to play at their own stadium in front of some of the fans that have supported them for decades. Amd whilst I don't love the current capacity of Kayo, they have ever right to do it whilst Sydney clubs play in the bush in front of 10k fans.

Now is it a good idea commercially for any of them to do this? No, but it is something that makes our game unique and connects with clubs and players with their roots. Latrell at Tamworth last year is a great example.
You're literally just arguing scale. At the end of the day the scale of the infestation is pretty irrelevant, a rat in the kitchen is still a rat in the kitchen.

Those "fans" aren't very passionate if they're too lazy and entitled to travel outside of their suburb to watch their team live, and lets be honest, 99% of the people at Dolphins games didn't give two shits about them until they got an NRL license, and a sizeable portion of them will lose interest quick enough.

The NRL isn't an amateur league, it lives and dies on the amount of money it makes, and all taking games on the road does is muddy the product and devalue ticketed memberships most of the time. The goal should be to try and build sustainable local products in places like Tamworth, not stretch the NRL thin at the expense of local footy so a relative handful of leeches, who should have been moved on generations ago, can feel like they're making a difference without having to suffer the inconvenience of actually making a difference.

So much wrong with this.

point 1. Having a 2nd Centrally located Brisbane side makes zero sense.

Dolphins hit the North. The trade off is a game or 2 to keep fans and sponsors in that part happy.

Same would apply if an Ipswich/Western Corridor came in, You will get Brisbane people but also Toowoomba is closer.

That is why you expand. Only looking after central Brisbane is just a dots on the map exercise and makes zero sense
Man Utd and Man City, Lakers and Clippers, Giants and Jets, Yankees and Mets, Celtic and Rangers, etc, etc.

All of them represent effectively or literally the same geographical area of their cities. Most of them share a stadium, the ones that don't are a short distance from each other, walkable in some cases. All of them aim to represent the whole city, and many of their rivalries are founded on a fight over which is a better fit to represent the city's culture and values.

There is a truism in marketing that the more accessible and convenient a product is the more successful it will be, and centrally locating your team in a place that's easy for as many people as possible to get to and appealing to as broad a portion of the population as possible will always be a more successful long term strategy than the alternatives. It just is what it is, and it's a major reason why the AFL's strategy in Melbourne has been significantly more successful than the NRL's in Sydney.

I think people are also conflating a teams stadium location and it's branding.

Geelong play multiple home games in Melbourne, for example.

All Cities sporting precincts should be centrally located near major CBDs and transport hubs

Each of these cities and examples have their own unique characteristics. It is not cookie cutter like the post implies.

Like them, Brisbane too has its cultural and geographical quirks.

A potential 25k stadium for Ipswich is not as outrageous as being made out. Massive growth corridor with its own identity. Not currently served by a professional sports club. I could foresee it being filled every match day.

I don't know if it is possible but Suncorp needs to be refurbed and expanded capacity wise to at least 60K-62K. Factoring members and corporates would allow big games to get 55K "sell outs". Current capacity does not do justice to RL in QLD.
It’s the big elephant in Rugby League’s, and the city of Brisbane’s room.

I’m not sure what the answer will be because Lang Park probably can’t be expanded too much, yet holds a massive cultural place in our game and the city.

But when numerous events - Origin, derbies, finals, magic round, soccer internationals, could sell upwards of 80-100k tickets - a solution needs to be found.

It is ludicrous that sports with limited future growth - cricket and ozzie rules - will be benefiting from the Olympics infrastructure.

I think Sydney has room for 2, maybe 3 precincts. But every team with its own ground is silly.
Moore Park
Parra
And something out near the new airport when that area starts to develop properly
Plus Homebush for big games, though really it and Parra should be combined.

it’s a shame that Homebush never really came to life as an area after the Olympics.

80k would really put pressure on Brisbane getting the grand final

origins would be even more amazing

Like DQ has said, I don't think any significant upgrade can happen to Suncorp in its current form as the main roof support structure is in each corner of the ground which will hinder any mods done to the joint.

I think there will always be a stadium at Milton as the location is ideal (train line and close to an entertainment prectinct as well as the CBD) and the heritage with the joint but if they knock the current version down the next one has to be a minimum 60-65k capacity (i would go a neat 70k) and that would mean if they can't achieve this in the current foot print it would have to be slid eastward about 40m and up over Hale St.

The big question then is, where do you play Broncos and The games in the 2-3 year period?

The only way I can armchair general it would be to close Castlemaine street, at least the part opposite Suncorp. Have the stadium shift west which would mean a complete rebuild of stadium.

I think the precinct and culture attached to the location is way too important to build a complete new stadium at another site.

Suncorp to become the new mid sized stadium like Allianz. (50-60k). Minor spruce up. Dolphins / Jets / Firehawks.

Rebuild QSAC for major events and connect to rail. Then Bris would have a large (70-80k) stadium. For QLD derbies, GFs, Soccer internationals, concerts etc. As the big boys, Broncos could even move there.

Gabba to remain as is. Cricket and AFL don't need a bigger stadium. Olympics athletics can be at Gabba so no need to compromise any of the rectangles.
