Rugby League final to boost NSW economy

  • The Australian
  • 12:00AM September 30, 2017
Tomorrow’s rugby league grand final at Sydney Olympic Park is expected to inject $30 million into the NSW economy, according to the chairman of Venues NSW, Christine McLoughlin.

With more than 40,000 fans expected to come to Sydney from interstate — supporting the Melbourne Storm and North Queensland Cowboys — demand for hotel rooms and extra local spending will be higher than if there were local teams in the final.

“Having two interstate teams significantly boosts the economic benefits,” she said. “The airlines and hotels will be big beneficiaries.”

The grand final will be held at ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park at Homebush. The stadium was taken over by the state government in July 2016. It paid a reported $220m buying out the final 15-year ownership of the former Olympic stadium from Infrastructure Capital Group, a fund associated with former AFL chair Mike Fitzpatrick.

The stadium came under the umbrella of the state-owned Venues NSW this year. It now oversees stadiums in Olympic Park, western Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.

Ms McLoughlin said the government had committed to upgrade transport to the venue through links with WestConnex, Sydney Metro, phase two of the Parramatta light rail project and other rail improvements.

She said bringing the stadiums under the umbrella of Venues NSW would allow for co-ordination of bidding for events.

“We need to get the right event for the right venue and work with the local business community to maximise the benefits,” she said.

The government has started work on a new Western Sydney stadium near Parramatta that will accommodate 30,000.

The Olympic stadium has a capacity for 80,000 seated, but that capacity was increased to almost 100,000 for an Adele concert in March this year by allowing people to stand on the field.

After the rugby league grand final, the stadium is set to host a Socceroos’ match against Syria as the national soccer team attempts to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

If we ever have a GF at the MCG, we could actually do this...

Sure the view would be shit, but t would be great seeing the old picnic blankets back at the GF.

And add a corner post at ever 10m mark for the kids

Looks sh!t.its looks like they went to the stadium supermarket and got no frills. Having a 30,000 seat stadium that can change to a intimate 8-10k seat arena seems to be the best option if it’s possible.

I don't know Canberra that well but is the stadium at AIS hard to get to? Is Civic the ideal place to have a stadium? Does it matter which place has the 30,000 seat indoor stadium? There is nothing in the article about Afl or cricket. They have used the term multipurpose which most of us cringe at but I hope that Todd chats to union and soccer bosses to make sure they are all on the same page and hold tight on the civic stadium plan. If Barr calls their bluff though, where do they play then?

No..its not. Public transport isnt that bad...
But theres f**k all to do around it.

If a stadium was in the city it would completely change the gameday experience.

Once the cowboys CBD stadium is up and running, the positive effects should be highlighted to the pollies in the ACT. When we were campaigning the state gov for ours the mayor of Adelaide was brought up to explain the benefits to Adelaide post AO upgrades so i cant see why the same cant happen for the Raiders. There’s already been a glut of building approvals around the new Cowbs stadium both commercial and residential.

Bruce Stadium is in the middle of the bush. You can see it top left in the green circle. The road in the bottom right leads towards the city. Massive bushland separates the Stadium from the city.

There is nothing to do post game except walk 45mins to The Lighthouse Pub.
Kinda kills the buzz by the time you get there.

A city stadium would transform the match day experience

I was staying in cbd and seemed to take ages to get there, as I had ltd time I took a cab which wasn't cheap. Nothing seemed to be around the place, Canberra would be so much better off with a central stadium, reckon you'd get a lot more out of town fans coming down for a sleep over if you could stay in the city and walk to the stadium, big boost to local economy from spending.

Ok so as it stands Canberra’s situation is;

Raiders want state/federal gov funding to move there headquarters from Bruce to there own block of land as well as develop a center of excellence there.
ACT gov probs wouldn’t want to give them any money because raiders currently pay them to use stadium and office space for there headquarters. There only chance seems federal funding or media pressure once Canberra make a finals series.

Everyone knows that Bruce stadium is old and run down. Not in the best spot for a stadium due to no entertainment bars/pubs/accommodation nearby. Civic stadium is clearly the best option.
ACT gov (Barr) seems hostile to rugby league for some reason, trying to convince the public that a 8000 arena is a better option.

The best option would be to create bad media publicity about getting the game and talk down the facilities that Bruce have. If the Canberra Raiders make the finals next season there will be more options available in the media to convince the public of a new stadium in civic. The World Cup in 2 months time has 3 games at Bruce. After the WC Some articles bagging the stadiums facilities and location would be ideal.

The 8000 arena option is for 1 team and wouldn’t pass the common sense law.
A 30000 seat indoor stadium that can be changed into a 8-10k arena for basketball and a 15k mini stadium for touch rl in the off-season seems like a reasonable solution. Stadium Engineers make it happen.

I can imagine how well a Canberra home final for GWS (Greater Western Sydney) will go down in western Sydney with the few genuine fans they have. I'm sure they are just playing politics but seriously does anyone actually care about this team? GWS representing Canberra as a part of western Sydney is such a joke. I'm sure the local ACT AFL fans only turn out because it is their only chance to see top level AFL and that being the case, they would turn out to watch anyone.
