ABC reporting this morning that 1 billion dollar estimate for the Gabba rebuild for the Olympics ‘wasn’t based on any analysis’. That’s why it blew out by triple that amount. The ‘former premier’ is to blame.

If they spend $2b on QSAC that would easily be the stupidest decision in sport infrastructure history. With the $1b set to be split between Suncorp and Gabba for a tart up, that makes $3b.

Spend $1.5b on renovating Suncorp and increasing capacity to 65k, and spend the same rebuilding half of the Gabba so you can fit a track in.

a 100k rectangular stadium in Brisbane would be huge for the city and its favourite sport

Just hold them at Carrara. Worked fine for the Comm Games, plus the scenery will be way nicer than Toohey Forest

I’ll give you that that’s a better idea than redeveloping The Gabba for athletics anyway. That’d be a disaster, it’d basically a complete rebuild to get it the right shape, there would be issues with surrounding heritage buildings and a school and at the end you’d either have to do another round of extensive rebuilding to reconfigure it for cricket and AFL or be left with another underused white elephant.

I think that’s in issue in a lot of places, they had it lucky last Olympics because Japan is ridiculously safe by world standards.
