from memory this loftus stadium will be purpose built for soccer , no other sports played there that can rip up the surface hence it being a privately built & owned venue.
It'd be very extravagant & I think theres no chance of it ever being built , but RL won't benefit if it does

Stadium impasse set to continue after NSW government delay

Codes and clubs from the country’s major sports, not to mention the Queensland and Victorian governments, have been forced to endure more frustration after the NSW government failed to resolve their stadium issue yesterday.

As was reported in The Australian yesterday, a decision on the futures of Allianz and ANZ Stadiums was once again delayed. It is understood the issue didn’t even make it to a cabinet despite suggestions that the state sports minister Stuart Ayres was set to request up to $2 billion be devoted towards rebuilding the major venues.

The issue has driven a wedge between codes and clubs in rugby league and football given the NRL and FFA joined forces to request that ANZ Stadium be given priority. Sydney Roosters and Sydney FC went against the wishes of their governing bodies by signing a letter asking for Allianz Stadium to be next in line once Parramatta Stadium is complete.

Waiting in the wings are the Queensland and Victorian governments, both of whom are anxiously awaiting the outcome so they can bid for the NRL grand final.

Teams want Allianz Stadium rebuilt first

Rugby union authorities and the three major sporting teams that use Sydney’s Allianz Stadium have written to Premier Gladys Berejiklian backing a plan to start work on Allianz before a rebuild of ANZ Stadium at Olympic Park.

Sports Minister Stuart Ayres is understood to be close to presenting cabinet with a plan where work would begin on rebuilding Allianz Stadium at inner-city Moore Park next year, and reconfiguring ANZ into a rectangular stadium in 2019.

The Sydney Cricket Ground Trust has pushed hard for work to start first on Allianz, which it manages, because of fears of a Labor victory at the 2019 state election. Opposition Leader Luke Foley is committed to rebuilding ANZ only.

The cricket ground authorities have also warned of potential safety threats at Allianz and pointed out it is 15 years older than ANZ.

Ms Berejiklian announced last month that she would rebuild both stadiums and did not rule out an Allianz rebuild before the election, or both stadiums being rebuilt at once. She was also prepared to spend more than the $1.6 billion allocated to upgrades, $300 million of which has been spent on the new Parramatta Stadium.

The NRL has made it clear that it supports an ANZ redevelopment first. One source claimed yesterday the league wanted the opportunity to make some money from holding a couple of interstate grand finals during any rebuild.

There has been speculation Mr Ayres’ plan involves an NRL grand final at the SCG during the rebuild. Parramatta Stadium would also host teams dislocated by a rebuild.

A letter to the Premier this week by Australian Rugby Union executive officer Bill Pulver and NSW Rugby Union chief Andrew Hore says: “While we are excited about, and strongly support, the opportunity that presents for ANZ Stadium to become, in rugby terms, the ‘Twickenham of the south’, based on the feedback of our fans and our own experiences we believe that Allianz Stadium, as the oldest stadium in the network, should be given investment priority. We strongly encourage the NSW Government to make an investment decision which will lead to the redevelopment of three stadia rather than exhausting the remaining funds at the Olympic Stadium.

“The ARU and NSWRU are committed to working with your government to deliver a stunning outcome for sports fans in NSW through the planned investment in sporting infrastructure and will do all that we can to support announcements around the investment phase of the NSW Stadia strategy.”

Another letter, dated last Friday, signed by the chief executives of the Waratahs, Sydney Swans, Sydney Roosters, Sydney FC, AFL NSW and Cricket NSW (the Alliance of Moore Park Sports) tells the Premier: “We understand that Cabinet will consider the next stage of capital allocation shortly. We wanted to specifically affirm our support for two world-class venues at Moore Park as a priority, including: an Allianz Stadium knockdown/rebuild with a minimum permanent seated capacity of 35,000; a completed SCG with the quality of experience in the MA Noble and Don Bradman stands replicated around the ground.”

The government’s latest plan is expected to be presented to cabinet by the end of the month.

If Allianz is a potential death trap why isn't the place closed down right now ? sure the venue needs an upgrade but a knock down rebuild is not needed, the Stadium is structurally sound, why not get architects and engineers in to see what can been done about improving/ fixing the roof and redesigning entry/ exit points, as a venue for viewing football Allianz is probably the best ground in Sydney, even in the very back row at the top you have a great view.

Rugby Union might get upset if they do Homebush first....

Oh no...

Maybe they might threaten to move the Shute Shield grand final to Brisbane...

There is no logic for the Allianz decision. It's not bad at all, in fact build a full roof over the whole thing, sort out the emergency access and you have a very suitable stadium for the next thirty years plus. They'd be much much better doing that and the anz properly and using the savings for a Bulldogs/Tigers new 30kmstadium somewhere suitable,

From a “dots on a map” point of view, if St.George and Cronulla ever shared a Stadium, it’s about as good as it would get.

Kogarah Oval to Loftus 14km
Shark Park to Loftus 11km

And 45min drive from Wollongong compared to
56mins to Kogarah.

But for historical reasons I can’t ever see St George agreeing to it. They’d rather go to SFS or ANZ. And sharks wouldn’t go from owning their own ground to paying rent to Chinese soccer overlords

it would depend on what the league wants though.
if they have a controlling say in the dragons...theyd say play here, and you would.
I get the feeling eventually they will put the pressure on..move the goal posts if you will.
and certain stadiums wont be "good enough"

they have in the past. fit things to suit their agenda
in any case. I don't know if the southern a league thing is even viable anyway. its very much up in the air

A rebuild to $350m-400m is logical.

Not to $700m

Modifying the stadium will have a huge cost, likely in the 100-200m range anyway. So for a 30 year old stadium a rebuild does make some sense over modifications, but the costing needs to be appropriate.

Even if they budget $350m-400m for a rebuild something will blow out cost wise and it would probably end up closer to $700 m anyway.

How funny is it that the papers have published a lot of SCG Trust media crap now because they would be fuming using up all there ammo now. The pollies still can’t make there mind up and it has been delayed again. This should allow the Nrl to put a final, ”Anz or else no gf” to the papers and hopefully drown out the current media cycle.

A number of things need to happen from Greenberg.

Use nsw gov lack of support to rugby league in nsw. Using World Cup as a example.

Write/re-write gf stadium conditions. Assuming Allianz will be less than 50k, make that the minimun seating capacity. Rules scg/Allianz out of future gfs. Forces the Nrl to use suncorp/Perth or Melbourne for gf if possible.

Whatever way the nsw gov decides to go, take games away from Sydney and into expansion areas and promote the hell out of it.

I see it as a win either way for the Nrl. They either have Anz completely rebuilt first or they get to have a gf in Brissy and/or Melbourne. Allianz gets a complete rebuild as well. The Nsw gov might as a sweetener try and give all Nrl Sydney clubs there CoE to keep the gf. Hope the Nrl have a counter offer in mind if that is the case. Free transport/pre-school programs/school access etc.
