Yep Suncorp needs to be our biggest stadium, so if they can find a way to make it 65k for now that will do nicely, not sure if that means a new Western stand filling in the corners or not, it a fairly major undertaking

Promising but hopefully not just lip service for a minor uplift.

For a proper upgrade would expect to spend 500m + and a capacity of 65k.

It’s to do with raising current capacity via structural provisions. A feasibility survey was conducted a couple of months ago.
You posted the below in march responding to some posters. maybe @SLRBRONCOS @jim_57 @beave i think.

Won’t work. Literally what I’ve stated previously re: corners and provisions is the only capacity expansion course as per original design and specifications.

There’s fire engineering, access/egress and certification issues with what you’re proposing.
Honestly you could do whatever really but the feasibility of it is an entirely different conversation.

Few things worth mentioning - the western stand houses all the services. Stadium operations are also located in the western stand in the basement. Basically by decommissioning the western stand, you will essentially decommission the entire stadium.

The western stand is actually the newest of all the stands. It was built after the other 3 sides of the stadium structure was already completed. This is because it houses critical services ie Energex transformer to power the stadium, mechanical plant room, fire pump room etc.

In the event of a knock down there are massive issues in moving the stadium over to the east 30m-40m. Hale St or ICB is quite literally underneath it. Therein lies massive constructibility issues and I’d argue these issues would be more impactful than say a Gabba site redevelopment which as you know has 4 main streets surrounding its premises. Building over Castlemaine is also problematic. The slight slope and the fact the bedrock is incredibly rigid and difficult to penetrate (this is because the river is relatively close and once upon a time the river was far wider than it currently is).

Of course none of these issues are permanent or impossible to overcome with astute engineering and project management. It is however incredibly costly and would drag on for quite awhile. Time and money plus the loss of revenue during decommissioning of the stadium or part of the stadium whilst it is being knocked down and rebuilt isn’t appealing to the stakeholders. Not right now anyways.

you were pretty strong on the western grandstand and why it poses issues upgrading it alone. do you know outcome of this feasibility report done on the ground?

Suncorp is going to be left in the dust, because of the Olympics, Im afraid.

If the Olympics weren't happening, it would be the obvious next choice for any future stadia upgrade.

They already said they are looking into it.

Reads like lip service at best, and at best a minor upgrade.

Remember that Olympic stadium will end up costing 2 to 3 times as much as currently forecast.

Oh I do get that part. At least they can offset that a bit with a redevelopment of the site where the Gabba sits now.

And honestly you'd want any stadium upgrade for Lang Park to happen after the Olympics or when that stadium at Vic Park is ready, so if Suncorp needs to be closed down for any period of time, they can play at that new stadium in the meantime.

It’s an upgrade that can happen within the parameters that they have to work with.

The actual Olympic Stadium costs won’t blow out that much. Being on a greenfield is a strong start in keeping costs down. However, the infrastructure leading to it will cost a bit and to my knowledge these costs haven’t been made public yet. From my understanding Mains Roads QLD will pick up some of the tab of these infrastructure costs. How it’s divided, I am unsure.

Pvl could do something out of the box and offer the nrl grand final to Brisbane if they do a full rebuild at 80k

Sydney still hasn’t tied up the grand final rights and the tourism benefits would be huge

Minor upgrade to Suncorp isn’t enough long term

The ground is amazing but the capacity is way too small now for big games and events

I think the upgrade is so Suncorp capacity is close to Victoria park but it will still be way behind the new stadiums facilities

If they could get it to ~60k in its current “bones” that would be about the best short-medium term result we could hope for IMO. A 70k rebuild is probably decades away after the money they’re spending on the Olympics.

If the Broncos win Sunday I wouldn’t be surprised if they sold out all 12 home games next year, that would be a great way to put more pressure on the government.
