World Rugby boss Brett Gosper backs stadium plan for RWC bid

World Rugby chief executive Brett Gosper says the construction of three new stadiums in Sydney will help Australia’s bid to host the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Gosper, an Australian who is the son of Olympic official Kevan, is in town to meet with new Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle and conduct broadcast negotiations for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Rugby Australia recently announced it would launch bids for the 2021 women’s Rugby World Cup and the 2027 Rugby World Cup for men.

Winning a World Cup bidding process is complex but it boils down to a combination of who can guarantee the most surplus cash for World Rugby and who has the best facilities.

Rugby Australia is therefore a firm supporter of the NSW government’s controversial $2 billion stadium construction plan, and Gosper confirmed having a new Allianz Stadium, new ANZ Stadium and new Parramatta Stadium as part of an Australian bid would be beneficial.

“Definitely the most up-to-date (stadiums) it is part of the assessment and was part of this assessment with the recent World Cup. I would imagine in a process going forward if there is a technical assessment, the modernity, the user-friendliness of your stadiums counts for a lot,” Gosper said.

Whether Rugby Australia can convince governments to underwrite a huge financial guarantee will be the critical issue ahead of a 2021 decision.

World Rugby uses World Cups to fill its coffers for the next four years and Ireland, South Africa and France all signed off on a guaranteed $470 million fee to World Rugby in 2027. In the end, France upped its guarantee to a whopping $611 million.

The sums seem both unaffordable and unsustainable but Gosper believes Rugby World Cups won’t go down the Olympic route and struggle for bidders, given countries have six weeks to reap revenue in the world’s third-biggest sporting event.

Gosper will talk through a host of issues with Castle, including the mooted Indo-Pacific Rugby Championship and its billionaire backer Andrew Forrest.

“If someone is intending to invest the kind of money we are talking about in other parts of the region, that’s interesting for us,” Gosper said.

“It’s not every day you get a third-party investor coming along to talk in that manner with that amount of money. We hope something comes out of this, where the investment happens in a good way for everyone.”

Meanwhile, Gosper backed the calls for all sevens global tournaments to follow the lead of the Sydney Sevens and combine men’s and women’s events on the same stage. He said the governing body would help pay for it.

All men’s and women’s games at the Sydney tournament were played on the same field across three days.

Australia women’s coach Tim Walsh called for the tournament to be a model for all others, and Kiwi star Portia Woodman backed his calls by saying New Zealand — and others — should copy Sydney.

Side side note
How many people went to the Olympic stadium first time it was used?
I’ll tell you
Over 104k
That was for a double header rugby league game .

A round 1 fixture at that.

Side side side note

I was there as well. Hot f**k of a day. When they were showing the intros for all 15 teams on big screen, I think I was the only one who cheered the NQ vision out of 104k people.........

f**king heathens.......

I was there too
Insanely hot
Early start to the season on account of the Olympics .
My dumbarse mate thought it’d be a good idea to drop acid for it.
Needless to say we had to take home home early.
Made him watch the sharks win then we bailed.
No shade at all where we sat up in the nose bleed add on bits either
f**k it was hot.

The 1999 season didn't start early because the Olympics weren't until the next year, also the Sharks weren't involved at the first double header at Stadium Australia. Manly played Newcastle and Parra played Merge.

The comp started early feb in 2000 due to the Olympics and Cronulla played against the merge in the rd1 double header at the ground that week.

I was there too. Nice and shady where I was seated and brilliant centre elevated views and drinking nice cold beers. Ah the memories...

I was there three. In a corner seat near the top ,every thing moving down below looked like insects.Got sunburnt.sweat saturated, saliva deprivation, felt like a dried prune.
Car in car park was like a sauna at the end.All to be part of history, sucked well and truly in./
Was looking forward to it being reconfigured with stands removed, then that fumbling mob intervened and decided to put in a couple of mills in,so it would remain the sh*t house config.it is today.

Don't know about a coffee cart, but that horrible intrusion, looks like its fallen off a country sh*t cart.
Looks like its been prepared by a 1st year home science student, who actually detests the subject.

People reminiscing about the season opening rugby league double headers in 1999 and 2000 at what is now ANZ Stadium bring up a point about heat. A few people have suggested that it is imperative that the new stadiums have good cover in case of rain, but the new stadiums also need to provide shade for when it is hot.

If you want people to attend live events, they need to be comfortable, and sitting in pouring rain or scorching heat due to the lack of cover at the stadium is a sure fire crowd killer. The San Francisco 49ers are finding this out with Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. This stadium, which many Australia journos were praising as "state of the art" when it opened, is now slated by quite few of the fans of the 49ers because of the stadiums location further inland, where it is much hotter than at Candlestick Park, and due to the lack of shade, they are getting literally scorched after each game.

True the 49ers have not been having the best of seasons on field, but there have been plenty of complaints about the lack of shade from their season ticketholders, especially for pre-season games, and afternoon games early in the season. Fact is their eastern stands on hot days are often deserted as people will not sit in them due to the heat. So whilst you have excellent views of the field, and great amenities, if you wind up on the eastern side of the ground you are in for a broiling depending on the time of year.

As such the rebuild for ANZ and the SFS need to take note of this as there is no point of repeating mistakes made elsewhere with the new stadiums. Before people say I'm being silly, do people remember what happened on the opening of the SFS in 1988 at the Roosters v Dragons game? It pissed down raining all day and nearly everyone who went to the ground got soaked, including many of the Trust members and those in the Corporate reserve, let alone those seated down in the bowl area.

Unless it’s a completely in door venue you are going to cop it no matter what.
Shade can make it very cold in a half empty stadium.
Let’s face it
Any stadiums they build will rarely be sold out during the normal season games.

The joys of stadium food! Nib used to be great before renovations as they had no food outlets so they used to get food vans inside. Wood fired pizza, kebabs, curry. You name it decent grub. Now it’s back to the same fried sht as everywhere else.

Top marks to Canberra though, the burger I had there was top notch.

That fish finger burger was $12.50 robbing dogs!
