I wonder if it might be that size to cater for multiple teams? They talked a lot about having very personalised game day experiences for the clubs who use it.

Maybe they have dedicated change rooms? Dedicated function rooms etc?

Not sure about change rooms. You could be right though but I doubt they'd build separate change rooms for Wanderers and Eels.
I think it's more about the LED lighting and stuff like that, which they can customise to the game day teams. Check out the video I just posted.

Perhaps not, but I do know they have them at ANZ.

There will also be dedicated change rooms for female sports too.

I would be surprised if they didn’t have dedicated dressing rooms for the two prime tenants to be able to customise and make themselves at home.

Does anyone know what colour the seats are going to be? I hope not red or even worse that God awful soulless grey at Edihad.

I think that is my point though. The NRL, ARU and FFA currently let their marquee events be played on ovals. Whilst they let that happen, they will never force a rectangular stadium built. Deny Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide marquee events and see how quickly the attitude changes.
Deny Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide marquee events and watch RL go backwards in those states. AAMI is full around three times per year (one or two soccer derbies, Storm finals & Anzac Day), there is no way the Vic (or WA/SA) governments will be forced to do anything. That is no way to build goodwill and grow any of the rectangular codes.
P.s. Yes, SOO was better to watch @ Etihad than MCG and if the crowd is under 65K next week it should return there.

Agree with that, I don't think we're in too bad of a position once Sydney is done. 20-30k at AAMI, Adelaide & NiB are all perfect size for club NRL.

I think we have to suck up Oval grounds in the AFL states if we want/need room for over 30k. Best case scenario maybe Football or Union World Cup bids get us 40k rectangular stadiums in Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth. I don't know if either FIFA or World Rugby stipulates stadiums must be rectangular or if it is just preferable.

I'd be more interested in what either or those bids could do in regards to:
  • Brisbane - Upgrade of Suncorp (if possible) and/or new medium sized stadium.
  • Gold Coast - Improved public transport links and parking for CBUS.
  • Newcastle - Upgrades to Hunter Stadium.
  • Canberra - New city centre stadium.
  • Wollongong - Upgrades to WiN of either plan to host there.
MCG is FIFA compliant, so oval is OK depends on capacity, sight lies, etc. One Russian stadium only holds 35K.

I agree with most of your points. I don't see Football going backwards in Melbourne though if the Socceroos refused to play on ovals. If this was then coupled with being denied SOO and big Wallabies tests, it may then begin to apply some pressure on the Govt to build something to attract these events.

Socceroos already take their big matches to ANZ because of this.

Melbourne will continue to miss out on the big World Cup qualifiers.

Better to have the speckled look like nq as hides the gaps when half empty.

Tbh I hate the Queensland speckled look at the Gabba & NQ, it masks if there’s a low crowd, but it also makes it hard to see if there’s any crowd even when there is.

Best way to combat crowd issues for TV is to only sell the eastern grandstand for small matches. (Western being members). Don’t sell the ends until you have to.

AFL owns Etihad now don't they? Would they let Origin be held there? they used to kick up a stink about how moving the seats to a rectangular layout would "ruin the turf" before they owned it, I'd imagine they would be worse now.. Depends how much they were paid I guess

I'm pretty certain for Origin's at Etihad, the seats haven't been moved into rectangular mode.

Even though it creates a better viewing experience, it drops the capacity from 55k to 48k. And as you say, the AFL don't like what it does to the turf.

Part of the new govt funding of Etihad requires the AFL to give access to other sports.

Yeah I don’t think the sides have been moved in for a long time.
