AFL owns Etihad now don't they? Would they let Origin be held there? they used to kick up a stink about how moving the seats to a rectangular layout would "ruin the turf" before they owned it, I'd imagine they would be worse now.. Depends how much they were paid I guess
they shouldn't play there mainly because then the AFL will profit from it

MCG is FIFA compliant, so oval is OK depends on capacity, sight lies, etc. One Russian stadium only holds 35K.

Where on earth did you hear that? The MCG is not even close to being FIFA compliant. In its current state it can not even host a group match let alone a final.

There is a massive difference between an oval stadium and a cricket oval.

It was considered compliant when we made the WC bid. The opening game was to be there and a semi.

I'm pretty certain for Origin's at Etihad, the seats haven't been moved into rectangular mode.

Even though it creates a better viewing experience, it drops the capacity from 55k to 48k. And as you say, the AFL don't like what it does to the turf.
My understanding is the the capacity increases in rectangular mode. Record crowd there is for RU.
The second and third levels at Etihad are much closer to the action than ANZ or any other oval. It is fine for rectangular sports. Soccer has gone off the stadium because Victory crowds have dropped so much and 22k at AAMI is better. The SOO I went to there was brilliant.

Nah, it definitely drops. If you look at this image:

You can see you lose seats in the corners. It’s why the NRL, FFA and ARU have occasionally decided to not use the retractable seating when they think they’ll sell it out.

You are right, I had assumed it was in rectangular mode for the Union 57K.
Still based on the image it is a brilliant t 48K rectangular stadium.

Oh, I agree completely. It’s perfect for what Melbourne needs in that capacity range.

The problem is, once the three rectangular codes think they can exceed 30k at AAMI they decide to shoot for the 55k, as opposed to creating a much better atmosphere at 48k.

If I recall though, this was pretty contentious. The back 15 rows or so were further from the field than the stated maximum in the FIFA handbook.

However, FIFA had bent/ignored/been bribed to look the other way before when it came to World Cup stadiums, so the decision was made to use the MCG based on capacity.

I think the issue was that if they'd used Etihad, the guide states that modular stadiums have to be used in 'football mode' for FIFA events - dropping ground capacity to 48k, and ruling it out of contention for the final and semi finals (which require 75k for the final and 60k for the semis) and the opening match (which requires 50k).

It would have left Melbourne only being able to host quarters and the third-place playoff, and the Victorian government were never going to get behind that.

I see a point down the track that when storm, aleague melbourne exceed aami park the only option will be etihad/marvel or whatever it’s called. The Vic gov will not spend 100 of millions of dollars on a aami park upgrade or another stadium. They will end up paying the afl to let other codes play there which would increase afl revenue. The writing is on the wall. Maybe a joint proposal by aleague,Nrl and rugby to purchase or upgrade aami could put a spammer in the works in Victoria.

I think that's so far down the track, it'll be after Etihad is replaced. In order for that to actually be a thing, the Storm and Victory would have to be exceding 30k every single home game.

I think an upgrade of AAMI will be needed when/if this happens, Etihad currently already has 5 afl clubs as tenants, plus the renegades, plus concerts, if storm, victory, city and rebels all ended up needing a bigger stadium I dont think etihad would be able to accomodate them all

I agree it may be a little while down the track but storm are approaching 25k members. I’m not sure of victory’s membership numbers. When the Vic gov are throwing money at etihad precinct, I’m not sure Vic gov will want to spend money on a stadium redevelopment for another 20/25yrs. By then I’d expect storm member numbers be over 40k and crowds to be at capacity.

And I agree with you in that having all these teams playing at etihad is simply unsustainable. I hope this is the case.

Storm are approaching 25K members and doing well but they aren't near the point where AAMI park is too small and probably never will be.

Members and average crowd are entirely different kettles of fish.

The Storm would need to be regularly selling out AAMI - I would suggest 10 regular games a year over an extended period - before they could go hat in hand to the Victorian government asking for half a billion dollars for a stadium. That's a very long way down the track, and Etihad couldn't handle the demand in any case.

Being a member is different to having season tickets........

AAMI is perfect for the Storm, they don’t need a bigger ground.
