No, it’s doing what the vast majority of citizens want. The economic argument for this investment is weak.

Labor should look at building one good rectangular. Two is just dumb.

Can you give us the economic argument for a pedestrian bridge over a river? Or a Bicycle path to bypass major roads? Or maintaining inner city parkland?

Government funded infrastructure isn't all about profit, obviously improving the image, appeal and livability of a city is a major factor as well.

‘Breathtaking ignorance’: SCG Trust member Alan Jones responds to Labor’s ‘no stadium plan’

With the Sydney Football Stadium to be demolished in January, Mr Daley says the Opposition will not pay for the rebuild if they win the election on March 23.

In an interview with Ben Fordham on Monday, Mr Daley “put the SCG Trust on notice”, insisting they will have to cover the $729-million price tag.

Last year the Trust ran a $2-million surplus, with Mr Daley saying, “There’ll be no free money from the taxpayer. I’ll work with them to get finance”.

The longest-serving member of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust, Alan Jones, has pointed out to Mr Daley that it’s a not-for-profit, public organisation.

“Labor Party Leader Michael Daley ought to do a bit of listening before he talks.

“He’s come to the job having done no homework. The bloke’s demonstrating an ignorance which is breathtaking.

“He’s welcome to meet with the Trust at any time. Michael Daley, you might learn something.”

NRL chair Peter Beattie said there was no question that “Allianz needs to be rebuilt somehow”.

“How these things are funded is a matter for government. The reality is Sydney is Australia’s largest city and Allianz is a dog of a stadium. That’s why people don’t go to games. It has to be rebuilt properly.”

NRL ceo Todd Greenberg said without a rebuilt Allianz, “we would have the option to take the Grand Final to other states.”

“NSW has already fallen way behind Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and WA which all have modern stadiums,” he said.

At a time when the LNP is imploding nationwide, only NSW Labor could be doing this badly.

Their only policy position is 'we'll cancel what the coalition are doing'. I think Gladys is a f**kwit and the state LNP are terrible, but cancelling projects wholesale is not good policy unless you have credible alternates.

Do they think we've forgotten Iemma/Rees/Keneally? Announce a metro line on Tuesday, quietly cancel it on Thursday, then rinse/dry/repeat?

You can add Carr to that list....

No wonder the city is a mess at the moment...... its catchup for the previous 20 years of promises...

I can't see a state government leaving a hole where 3 major tenants are left homeless..
The decision is made ..live with it... I'm sure contracts will have been signed with large penalties.
People will be a lot more upset if $200 million - $300 million is shelled out for nothing...

Having spent this weekend in Sydney and seen how many people are sleeping in doorways down George St there would certainly be a strong social argument for the money to go on other things, however since the time of the Romans the building of grandiose sports stadiums for the plebeians has been seen as a sign of a communities success and prosperity. Sydney is falling behind the countries other cities for sporting stadiums and might as well be now as ten years when it will cost more. I suspect the constant arguing over which stadium to do and how hasn't helped public confidence.

The good thing is there is a clear party split on this so the public will get to vote accordingly which is unusual in this day and age of safe middle politics.

Fancy Alan Jones telling someone else that they should listen.

re taking GF to other cities. To cover the loss of 20-30k ticket sales (WA,Qlnd,SA) a hosting city would need to pay around $3mill. Though you would expect the decreased availability would see higher ticket prices and sell outs meaning no need for fire sales like at ANZ some years.

I would have thought that connectivity and transport links were pretty important to make a city functional.

There’s a million papers on this if you care to search.

The Liberals trying to fast track the steam rolling of the SFS prior to the election stinks.

Has Eddie changed teams?

Why do we need to pay someone to mow the grass in parkland in the footpath is concrete?

Long bow. That’s general maintenance.

I think a more appropriate comparison would be to returf the whole park because a dog has taken a dump on it.

And they’d mostly pertain to road & rail infrastructure, not cycle paths & footbridges.

There are a number of economic arguments in relation to social wellbeing and social determinants of health alongside environmental long term cost savings in regards to walk-able and cyclable cities. But we digress.

The NSW coalition government should not be making hasty decisions in it's last days of term. They should have always taken this to the electorate rather than rubbing the backs of merkins who will be giving them a job in the future.

Having gone to Jubilee over the weekend for A-League, the SFS is the light years ahead. Give it a refurb. The only merkins who care about the placement of the corporate boxes (and this is the main reason for tearing it down and rebuilding it) are the trust.

Bad decisions have been made in the past, and I guarantee bad decisions will continue to be made, wasting a shit load of public money. This is NSW after all. Nothing is ever done right.
