I'm a Labor member, but take the Grand Final interstate if the mad bastards scrap stadium funding.

I was until this year. This issue and a myriad of others has ensured that if I found a old 1c coin on the street, I'd throw it down the drain than donate it to that lot.

What has the Grand Final got to do with Allianz anyway? Hasn't been played there in 20 years. This is really just a sport trying to hold a possible future Government to ransom. This Daley will appear a gig if he backs down, and his position appears to have the popular support. He will win votes if he sticks to his guns.

The NRL signed a deal with the NSW govt, they’re not holding anyone to ransom, they’re asking the deal to be honoured.

Plus the deal isn’t just for Allianz, it’s for ANZ as well.

It’s irrelevant that the GF isn’t played at Allianz, the deal was the govt spend the $1.5b & the NRL agree to play the GF in Sydney for 25 years.

It’s a typical business transaction. The NRL would be negligent in their duties if they didn’t sell their best assets like this.

It is absolutely no surprise that a sporting body would want billions of taxpayer money spent on it, but you really do need to ask the taxpayers first before blowing their money. That is why Allianz should not be demolished until after the election.

It would be an interesting world if no Govt decisions were made until the tax payer agreed lol

They’re not spending billions on the NRL.

The govt retain ownership of these stadiums, they’re spending billions on stadiums that multiple sporting bodies & promoters will pay money to rent.

The NRL would make more money for themselves by directly selling their premium assets to the highest bidding city.

My view is that labor are now odds on to win the NSW election;

The NRL should be pragmatic here and start negotiating behind the scenes with labor. There’s the perfect conduit in Peter Beattie.

The NRL simply does not need a 45k stadium at Moore park, it has never gotten good treatment from the SCG trust. It’s now their opportunity to put one over them.

Negotiatiate with labor for a 30k seat rebuild & restructuring of the SCG trust. This would cost half the amount of the current proposal.

Further, ditch the ANZ refurbishment. We can get a proper new stadium within 10-15 years anyway, and the NRL only need to use ANZ twice a year.

Labor can say they’ve saved $1.1 billion, the NRL have still gotten two excellent club venues out of the stadium deal.

What would the NRL give up? Only not being vocal about the change in plans. No guarantees other than perhaps a short term deal for the grand final in Sydney.

Past that short term deal, the NRL should then start selling the grand final to the highest bidder, plus a state of origin game per year. The money for this should go directly into a future stadium fund. If the NRL can get to the point of owning their own stadium(s), then we can further secure the future of the code.

Agreed on Allianz but not ANZ. It should be a knock down and rebuild.

That’s what I’m saying, if we wait 10 years we can get the knockdown of ANZ. At the moment the best we get is the refurbishment.

The politics of this is too hot, the electorate are waiting with baseball bats. This compromise would allow labor to sell its plan, arguing they’ve saved $1.1 billion. The NRL can wait for 10 years on ANZ, Souths & the dogs don’t need to play there.

In the grand scheme of things the NRL have again tumbled back into a pretty good spot with the stadium negotiations, as long as they stick to their guns and don’t do anything stupid then pretty much anyway things go they win.

This talk of protests is silly and will only result in making them look like the bad guys to general public, what they should do is make there position very clear to the public so it’s on the public record and can’t be easily twisted then try to negotiate with Labor.
If Labor can be negotiated with and a reasonable compromise can be come to then great they come out with the stadiums they want, they may have to sacrifice a bit more to get them but still it is a win, if Labor can’t be negotiated with then they’ve got no choice but to go to the nuclear option and take the GF on the road for at least a decade or so and even then not until NSW are really paying for it to get it back (but for Christ sake don’t just give the hosting rights to Brisbane, set some minimum standards then sell the rights to highest bidder on a yearly basis, just like the NFL do with the Super Bowl) and that is a big win as well cause suddenly they’ll have the potential to make more money from the GF then ever before and it’ll become a much bigger tool for the growth of the sport then it previously has been.

If they don’t follow through on their threats this time, and really make the NSW gov hurt (so no taking it away for a year or two then giving it back like nothing happened, they really need to take it away and not give it back unless the NSW government is paying an arm and a leg for it, they literally need to punish them for f**king them around to hammer home the point that the NRL won’t be messed with and used and take it lying down, otherwise it will continue to happen) then they’ll have lost all credibility as negotiators and everybody they deal with will try to screw them and be loose with their contracts just as the NSW gov have been...

So yeah the TLDR version is that unless the NRL are utterly hopeless (again) they are pretty much in a win win situation.

I think the only way Souths would move back to the SFS if they were offerred the same deal as at ANZ or a equal deal as what Easts get

Exactly right. We got completely screwed over by the SCG Trust which is why we ended up at ANZ. I don't think current management would consider a move back to the SFS unless the SCG Trust gave us a deal similar to the Roosters or were ousted (the SCG Trust) all together.

Michael Daley is a Rabbitohs man so surely he is aware of the benefits of an improved stadium footprint in Sydney. Do we need to get Rusty on the phone to him?

The ANZ stadium deal will end after the current contract, so that might make a move back to Allianz more attractive

The nfl probably have more than 15 stadiums with a capacity of 75,000 plus. Also, the nfl is a national sport unlike league, so basically only Melbourne and Brisbane would be worth bidding, and Brisbane only have a53,000 odd capacity. The AFL must be laughing.

The capacity of Brisbane doesn’t really matter, the Queensland govt would cover the ticket shortfall.

Not sure why we’d care about the AFL laughing?

I’d say there’s legitimately 4 cities other than Sydney that could bid in the near future

Melbourne
Brisbane
Perth
Auckland
