Probably not, but if he wins, he'll be bound by his undertaking not to rebuild with public money. My money would be on a refurbishment for which the Trust stumps up a goodly share.

Only way that could happen would be if it was scaled down to a $300-400mill project. Given mostpeople think it would be a good thing for it to be 30-35k that wouldn’t be the worse outcome.

I think this Daley bloke has gone too hard, too soon.

He'll be f**ked if he leaves a hole or half demolished stadium and he'll be f**ked if he fixes it.

The SCG trust could’nt undertake to repay a $400m loan either, it’ll be done with public money after Daley begrudgingly accepts there’s no alternative.

The SCG Trust is a non-profit government organization started to oversee the parklands of Moore Park and manage both the SCG and Allianz stadium. The NSW government own both grounds.

You’re mostly correct, the parklands are managed by the centennial park trust, though.

Yeah, I’m thinking we probably just end up with a more austere Nu-SFS. Daley isn’t going to leave a giant hole in the ground on the edge of the city in an entertainment precinct.

Maybe not a hole

But where the Entertainment Centre used to sit is now a bunch of office blocks

I'm pretty certain under the current law all that land can be is:

a - A sporting/entertainment venue.
b - Public parkland.

Do you really think the inner-city lefties who are going to deliver Daley to power next year would let him get away with putting a giant Meriton tower on that plot?

Yeah that’s because they built a new concert venue 500m away

what’s the new venue called? I forgot the SEC was shut down. Saw some good shows there in the early 90’s and when the NBL was at it prime.

*edit, just found the replacement venue.

so $1.5bil was spent replacing the Sydney entertainment centre, was there
mass outcry over this by hanky head and co.? if not, why not?

Convention Centre or ICC

Has a 8,000 seat concert hall. Can’t host sport though.

There’s some talk of another facility being built that can host indoor tennis & basketball.

If there's no stadium there in the future the blame must be placed on the Liberals for knocking down a perfectly good stadium.

For f**ks sake, when are people going to get it through their f**king skulls it had nothing to do with the view from the seats as to why the stadium is being replaced?

It's facilities for disabled and female fans were arcane, there was virtually no cover from the elements, it's pathways of access and egress were deathtraps if anything bad ever went down there and the corporate areas were bolted on after the fact in the worst possible place. Due to the design of the stadium, a patchwork renovation was not possible without costing almost as much as building a completely new stadium.

I live in Newcastle and seldom visit the SFS but even I understand completely why this is being done.

The old, “if it’s fine for me, it must be fine for everyone”

Really, the SFS was built at a really bad time. Prior to full time pro sport, prior to women’s sport taking off, prior to the understanding better access was needed for the disabled.

It was also built on a shoestring budget because in the 1980’s the NSW govt had no money.

My only beef with the rebuild is the $730m. It doesn’t need to be that grandiose.
