The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

It wasn't originally my preference but with the mess that has been made of this situation it may be the best outcome.

Limited use of ANZ is definitely the best outcome for rugby league.

For the city of Sydney it would’ve been best to get a world class rectangular stadium, capable of hosting major events, but instead it looks like we’ll get a compromise.

Best thing to do is wait 10-15 years and get ANZ done properly.

Hey Quicksilver - we get it. Give you a tinnie of KB and a lukewarm chiko roll on a bench with a half-decent view of the ground and you're fine.

However others in this thread have realized that stadium design, and what the bulk of contemporary fans want in a match-day experience is slightly different from when the Newtown Jets last made a first grade grand final and that's what we're discussing.

The Newtown Jets never played at the SFS. The SFS is virtually a spacecraft compared to Henson Park. As is the existing ANZ.

My argument is that the improvement between what exists now and what is proposed isn't worth the money. Not even close.

Especially when the whole argument is based on them providing craft beer and food caravans, which have nothing to do with the stadium but everything to do with the catering.

Parking a caravan on the street outside and having a dedicated food village are not the same thing. Not even close.

It is not just about watching sport anymore. It is about the full match-day experience. Which for some is watching all three grades and drinking a lukewarm KB, and for others is about an integrated entertainment experience. New grounds have to be built for the demands of 21st century consumers - of which you a clearly not one.

You have very little understanding of these things my friend. You are probably young and naive so it's not your fault.

All of these nice little side projects can be done easily with the existing facilities with a few minor alterations. We are being taken for a ride here by the Government and corporate interests because they want to create huge construction contracts. That is all.

These things come down to cost to the end consumer too. People complain that it's already too expensive to take the family to the football. All these side projects are going to create extra costs. I don't care, I can afford it. But I'm waiting for the complaints when it costs $46.50 for a GA ticket, $16.90 for a mid-strength craft beer.

It's almost like inflation is a real thing that keeps happening (even if wage growth doesn't keep pace)

I have little understanding of these things says the man who just quoted $16.90 for the price of a beer.

Nice humblebrag at the end there by the way. We’re all very impressed you can afford the costs of new stadium amenities.

Don't get me started on the house price bubble and the coming recession please.

The best thing to come out of this will be the creation of construction jobs in a downturn. That will actually be a positive, even if it is building a superfluous piece of infrastructure. Let's hope the economy recovers before completion though. Otherwise there will be no one to use it.

Well thank you.

I look forward to sharing a craft beer with you in the Mitchell Pearce Stand at the new SFS.

By the way, if the crux of your argument is ‘nice things cost money’, we know. The point being made is for whatever reason you have just decided the facts on offer about access/egress, emergency facilities, rust in the roof, general flammability of the stadium, facilities for women, facilities for the disabled, etc, etc, etc are not true and you are basing all of this upon the the time you went to a game in the 80s with a woman and it was fine.

There is a difference between an anecdote and a fact, and you would do well to learn what this difference is.

The issue for value for money is comp wide. New stadiums won't fix it but it is a good start

I go to the SFS quite a bit actually.

These items can be addressed, they just don't want to.

If things were so bad why did they just recently install those massive Jumbotrons at both ends? What a ridiculous waste that was!!

The seats probably need replacing. But this is just regular life-cycle work.

From the photos that have been circulated in the media, the majority of the rust appears to be surface only. Not structural. The new stadium will probably look similar within a couple of years. Regular maintenance might have prevented some of this btw. But I guess regular maintenance is just too bloody expensive. On that point, it's pretty dumb to buy a new car if you can't afford to service it.

I've addressed the toilet issue before. There's no reason why they couldn't extend outwards and preserve the walkway areas. These issue are very easy to address.

I have to say that I'm actually starting to come around though. I like Rugby League so I'll just go along with this for now and pretend these are actually real issues. A new stadium will be a lot of fun. I'll go along and enjoy the novelty for three months. Then when Hobart builds something better I'll jump on the bandwagon to knock down whatever we have to one up them.

What a lot of people don’t understand here is, this isn’t the “block” where you just gut everything and reuse the old shell.

The shell is the problem, newer stadiums are designed to be upgraded, roofs or stands added.

By the time you tried to upgrade the whole sfs, you would probably end up spending a few 100million dollars anyway, and still not be completely happy.

There is a reason why people knock houses down and rebuild, because it makes sense.

Thank you, but you have no idea what you are talking about.

just because you clean the toilets doesn't make you a construction expert on whether these many things can be 'easily' fixed
