it’s the same with commentary. Just ‘cause you can play the game, doesn’t mean you can commentate on it at a proficient level. Matt Nable is an example. I know he is somewhat intelligent but jesus christ his commentary is Z grade shit.

same applies to RL admin like you say.

“Forget the people who dedicated their entire working life becoming great at comentary/business admin. We only want people who became famous simulating car crashes with their heads and suffered more than a decade of near weekly head injuries.”

It seems fairly obvious why the Murdoch papers are always pushing that “we need REAL rl people” line. They are doing $billion deals with the ARLC, of course they want to be negotiating with a moron...

Yep. Look at the campaign news Ltd used to run David Smith out of the game./ HE'd come from running Lloyds of London, one of the world's biggest companies. Yet he was criticised for not being a rugby league person, and then when he dared stand up to News and not give them what they wanted on a silver platter during the TV negotiations, they amped up to run him out of town with plenty of people saying "he blew it" when nothing of the sort was the case. His only crime was standing up to News Ltd and giving them some of their own medicine. He was very public he was not in the job "for life", so he was prepared to fight. Others went to water at the first sign of News stamping its feet like a big bunch of cry babies.

How exactly did he f**k up the TV rights?
by not utilising that they had got Fox and 9 to relinquish their first and last rights during the previous deal

the man who was responsible for that quit as a commissioner because Smith went rogue and botched it

It was pretty clear that his stratagy was to play FTA against PayTV (since there were no other PayTV stations to sell to)...

NRL has usually peen paid its value from 9 (its the quality of the broadcast that is the problem there). The underselling was always with FOX.

The plan was clearly to show News that the NRL was willing to leave if they didnt get paid full vlaue. The problem was that JGrant and the commission went to water behind him.

Seriously, if DSmith really undersold to TV networks, explain to us; why was Murdoch so pissed about getting rights cheap?

Samuels resigned because he is about modernising and rationalising companies, I’ve experienced him first hand at my place in doing this. He could see there was no shifting RL old guard and was wasting his time.

Disappointed at the direction the ARLC has taken in the past 18 months, particularly the recent surrender by chairman John Grant to NRL clubs over funding, two of Australia's most prominent businessmen have resigned as commissioners.
his disillusionment has continued with the demand by NRL clubs and state leagues for funding to be diverted away from grassroots development. Samuel is a strong advocate of rugby league's expansion into developing states.

Smith had Murdoch by the curlies and Grant and co caved.

he never had anyone by the balls and Gyngell couldn't believe the gift he had been given when he suckered Smith and picked up the rights for a gift with no bidding war

Smith got more fta money than afl did, it was the one part of the deal where we won, as usual fox stiffed us with lower $’s and a sht ko time.

4 games for $185million, double the previous fta deal. Should not have allowed ch9 to sell the Saturday game though imo.

Smith had left Fox with dud games not worth two squirts of camels piss

they would never have bought the rights to those but because Smith went rogue it ended up that the ARLC needed Fox more than they needed the ARLC especially after they did the AFL deal

BS, NRL is by far Fox’s biggest subscription driver. The real value in this deal for them was in getting every game simulcast, something they got on the cheap as usual,

Yet the AFL Pay /overall TV deal was larger suggesting the fact Smith jumped the gun went rogue,
got a good (ATT) 9 deal, and Rupert got so miffed he positioned himself to secure the simulcast deal at a lesser price ,than would have prevailed had not Smith gone in all guns blazing early.

Then Smith fronting up on his lonesome ,bragging at the NRL Tv conference (no other commissioners present),how terrific the FTA deal was for the NRL.
Which it would have been if Rupert had played ball. The fact he didn't watered down the ch9 deal and thus the overall TV contract involving 9 and Fox.

Rupert's mob are thieves at the best of times, and have shown themselves to be ruthless and unprincipled.Phone hacking is just such an example.

Playing one against the other, when they were involved in the past NRL deals, is fraught with danger. It's not a bank takeover.

I have yet to figure or find out ,why no other NRL commissioners were present at Smith's conference.
Every sport TV contract announcement I have witnessed in this country ,involves sport execs and the TV directors.
