It's interesting this is being amped up by the Tele as dramatic and something that could embarrass the (potentially) outgoing LNP government - looks like all they're doing so far is uninstalling seats and a bit of fencing? The screens went ages ago to create the new one at the SCG.

Hardly irreversible stuff

I read an interesting article on Murdoch and his influence the other day (in AUS, USA and UK), showing how he always supports the right wing views, until he thinks that govt is not going to get in, and then he curries favour the other way so he looks like a good guy to the new govt.

Either way, the stadium is getting demolished. That contract is happening. It's what happens next which is more interesting.

If AFL asked the govt to built another stadium in Melbourne, it would get done and this anti-RL media mob would be writing puff pieces about how great it was for the fans, corporate, the game, new jobs and the local economy.

The state government here is putting $225M into the redevelopment of the Docklands Stadium, which is OWNED by the AFL! And another $240M into surburban grounds.

Its pretty clear that the AFL used their GF as leverage for this also, as its committed to them being held in Victoria for the next decade or so at the same time.

Not a peep from the press here.

Smith had left Fox with dud games not worth two squirts of camels piss

they would never have bought the rights to those but because Smith went rogue it ended up that the ARLC needed Fox more than they needed the ARLC especially after they did the AFL deal

Dud games? As in 4 exclusives and the chance to similcast the rest. So nearly identical to what they have now.

F*ck, you really drink the NewsLtd cool-aid dont you.

If FOX didnt need NRL, why was Murdoch ao pissed to lose it?

Yet the AFL Pay /overall TV deal was larger suggesting the fact Smith jumped the gun went rogue,
got a good (ATT) 9 deal, and Rupert got so miffed he positioned himself to secure the simulcast deal at a lesser price ,than would have prevailed had not Smith gone in all guns blazing early.

Then Smith fronting up on his lonesome ,bragging at the NRL Tv conference (no other commissioners present),how terrific the FTA deal was for the NRL.
Which it would have been if Rupert had played ball. The fact he didn't watered down the ch9 deal and thus the overall TV contract involving 9 and Fox.

Rupert's mob are thieves at the best of times, and have shown themselves to be ruthless and unprincipled.Phone hacking is just such an example.

Playing one against the other, when they were involved in the past NRL deals, is fraught with danger. It's not a bank takeover.

I have yet to figure or find out ,why no other NRL commissioners were present at Smith's conference.
Every sport TV contract announcement I have witnessed in this country ,involves sport execs and the TV directors.

He didn't have to play ball, NRL caved in, sacked Smith and got on its knees once again to accept a lesser deal from Fox. Smith did his job getting a massive increase on the fTA deal, maybe if they had shown some balls and let him complete the job he would have got Fox to stump up what they should have? We will never know as we are led by weaklings.

Grant was probably busy on the golf course or somewhere.

Of course no one made him, but in the end it cost when compared to the AFL deal. With SOO and tests we should have got more.
There was a way to go about it, not rogue.

Got on their knees ,as if you'd know that.Perhaps ask yourself why, because Smith went rogue. They wouldn't have had their knees scraped ,if they had worked on the basis of two parties plus the NRL ,not one.
Last line is a dumb comment. and I have little affection for Grant. Who BTW always showed up for photo ops.
TV deals are big publicity deals and every sporting code be it union, AFL ,soccer or the NRL have had the commission represented plus the TV execs from FTA and Pay.

The fact Smith played the Lone Ranger without Silver or Tonto, at the presso smells a rat to me.IMO if the Commission was fully supportive of the Smith FTA deal;,they would have been there with bells or balls on.They weren't simply.

The facts are obvious.the NRL needs Fox money and Fox needs the NRL.There has to be give and take on both sides.
This country is small bikkies compared to Europe and the States for TV sporting deals.Smith is not negotiating with ESPN or the BBC.

We should be used to a long line of stuff ups on TV deals, ever since the "wonderful best"Gallop $500m over 6 years deal, when the AFL got $780m over 5 years.
And you wonder why we are where we are.

The endless comparisons to the AFL deal are f**king painful. They're different sports with different needs and selling points.

They are indeed, but the media News/Fairfax and others play it up and the public particularly the southern ones tend to lap it up.They are also our main professional code competitor. And our code is the major subscription inducer for Pay TV.

They are effectively a rival business selling a similar product. You don't think Mcdonalds and KFC are in competition despite different products? But way off sadist so no more on TV from me, happy to debate in media forum.

I just don’t know where the story was anyway. Sydney news (9 or 10) had a piece with country league clubs coming and taking truck fulls of seats back to the bush before Christmas.

Compare them by all means if you wish, but at least go to some kind of effort is what I'm saying. Bald comparisons of the total amount are unhelpful and don't add to any discussion.

Ol Fitzy would have a problem with this and will be writing his next book about it. How a community sports club is ripping off the NSW taxpayer

Random thoughts

I would like to see Newcastle get an upgrade eventually, or at least some attention to the amenities at the ground. The 4G service there is awful and PA system is generally lousy. There were plans to expand on the Northern/Southern ends should Australia had got the soccer world cup, so I couldn't see the capacity getting an increase anytime soon.

How about the rest, what other grounds could do with a spruce up? Penrith?
