The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

It’s ridiculous that the nrl and qrl aren’t kicking up a stink about this aflw stadium being built in Ipswich. AFL has never been a thing in Ipswich it’s a rugby league city. A small boutique rectangular stadium in Ipswich would be far more beneficial to the economy and would attract far more patrons and would possibly bode well for a future NRL team bid. The Jets would obviously play out of it every week, could also play women’s a league out of it, play some nrl trials there, even some super rugby. This afl stadium white elephant will only ever get women’s afl.

Agreed it is BS. Ipswich's team is the Jets, always has been and always will be and they have nothing like this as a facility. If they had a shiny boutique 10k stadium like this, they could outdraw the Lions AFLW team from QLD Cup.

Thats interesting, in NSW the catholic schools tend to be RL because RU is church of England. I guess the early Catholic influence in Sydney was Irish so they thumbed the nose at RU. Are there not a lot of Irish in Brisbane.

Spot on. Things have changed now due to diversity and better standards of living but there were once political divides too. Labor were aligned to Catholics (Irish working class) and RL while the Libs were Church of England and RU which was largely private school.

Ashgrove? It was onion only when I was there in the early 80s. Has it changed ?
All the private schools in Canberra are union. I thought a lot of the private schools in Sydney were union too. I think only St Greg’s is a league focused Marist school.

When I was in Yr 10, I played in the MCS schools (Metropolitan Catholic Schools) competition on Thursdays.
The schools were:

St Patricks Marist Bros Dundas (my school)
Eastwood Marist Bros.
Fairfield Patrician Bros.
Blacktown Patrician Bros.
St Greg's Campbelltown
Auburn (??)
Parramatta Marist
Holy Cross College, Ryde.

I believe there was an MCC (Metropolitan Catholic Colleges) competition that had schools like Kogarah and those south and east

It is only the exclusive private schools that are big on union and probably a handful of smaller ones.
Joeys is the only catholic school with a big union program.

@beave

1 weather recording station in Townsville has had over 700 mm's of rain in 5 days. Other areas further inland and in the catchment area have had over 1300 mm's of rain over the same period. There's plenty more to come. This is a really serious situation for the residents so thoughts are with you guys.
What is the situation with the Ross Creek and impending effect on the stadium that is adjacent to it?
Ross River dam is at 213% capacity at the moment so more water has to be released for fear of dam failure, placing further pressure on the creek. High tides are also going to be a problem as well.
Would be interested to hear the latest from those locals in Townsville.

hey mate, I don’t live in Tvl at the moment but I still have a house up there so I stay in the loop. They’ve opened the 3 gates another notch to try and drop the dam level in prep for the rain they’re expecting over the next few days. I’ve read unofficially the dam can get to 380% before expected failure. 1000 cubic metres of water a second is flowing at the moment out from the dam and the tide is about an hour away from being high, the areas around the stadium (South Tvl and Railway estate)are always the first to go under when it rains hard so they will be under the pump tonight.

They raised the ground level at the stadium a fair bit, in preparation for this sort of thing, i’d say once this passes there will be not much activity at the stadium for a week or 2.

Growing up we had some doozy wet seasons but this one looks to have them all covered easily.

People wonder why every year I harp on when the nrl give us bulk home games in the first 6 weeks. This is the reason why we need away games for
the first 3 rds. If this weather was in 4 weeks time, imagine the absolute f**k around it would cause at so many levels. It’s f**king ridiculous we have 4 home games in the first 5 weeks AGAIN.

Thanks for the update mate. It truly is a dreadful situation there. The amount of rain is insane. Recently called Brownsville due the lack of rain, this event in Townsville has made up for it in spades.
The amount of water flowing over the spillway is unprecedented.

This comment just made by someone on WZ...…"at 8.03pm Saturday: 3.47m above spillway, 42.29m, ross dam has gained 2cm in 9 minutes, outside observation has windy with gusts pushing towards spillway wall. Not good."

And this is one of the model's projections for the next 10 day's rainfall (EC). Other weather models not predicting as much, but if this comes off, it could be catastrophic.

This will surely cause major delays in construction. Primarily though, the safety of residents in Townsville is the priority.

this pic explains a bit about what’s going on and the consequences.

The circled yellow bit is the new stadium

977-E61-BC-55-C9-4-EE9-8981-EDCD762-F8-FA8.jpg

The grey shading is the areas that are flooded when the dam gates are opened to allow 900cubic metres a second to flow over the spillway.

the gates are currently at 1000cubes and will probably go up a bit over night.

the pink areas are expecting to be flooded when the gates open to 2100 cubes.

Green is when the dam is breached..........

this pic has the same colour coding for the consequences but 1300’s I’ve circled in blue as the map focus’s more
west of city.

as you can see,the Ross River is not far from 1300’s so I would hazard a guess we will be needing a new home ground for 2019 if they have to keep opening the dam gates........

1. Have the Jets or QRL actually bothered to put a proposal forward? If not, they can't really complain. Funding announcements like this don't happen out of thin air.

2. I'm not sure why you feel it pertinent to point out that the venue will "only ever get women's afl" - that's precisely what they said and I don't think that would be viewed as an insult lol

1. Is kind of my point. Why aren’t the NRL/qrl/jets wanting to do anything? Why not try and go to to toe with AFL who are trying to make more in roads in a Rugby League stronghold.

2. Not sure how you found an insult in that but ok. My point was that if the government was willing to spend money and Ipswich council happy to endorse a stadium that will get limited use, then surely a proposal for a rectangular stadium, that could quite easily get more use/bums on seats and bring more people to the area has a lot more merit.

Rugby league quite frankly needs to do more.

"Limited use"?

It's not just an event venue, it's a training base. The club - all three grades - will be based there. The men's, women's and reserves will all train there.

As for 1.... email the Jets or QRL, ask them?

- I know.

- wasn’t aware I needed to contact a club and ask questions before posting an opinion on a forum. I know for next time now. Thanks.

If you know, then your comment of limited use is ridiculous, as the joint will be used daily.

As for your second remark, it was a suggestion you can take or leave. Don't play the opinion card, everyone's entitled to one, just as everyone's entitled to reply to one.
