They like watching rugby league
The game is in a convenient location
There friends are going to the game
It is a better option than the alternative ways to spend a few hours

Is there more people that live around Brookvale, Cronulla, Campbelltown or ANZ/SFS?

Seems like a whole bunch of NIMBYs in here. All happy to get funding for stadiums, but as soon as they realise there might be a bit of hurt for them, all hell breaks loose.

What funding? There's no guarantee for it at all - If there were guaranteed funding for a new stadium at Penrith then it would be feasible, but there isnt - It seems to be more "if you do this, we'll consider a new stadium for you but no promises"

New thread for new news. This is rather significant and shouldn't be buried in the Stadium debate thread.

This is the stadium the majority of Sydney rugby league clubs are backing in the dispute against the NRL and NSW government over the allocation of a $1.6 billion investment.
Fairfax Media has obtained images of what ANZ Stadium will look like if it receives a $700 million makeover to turn it into a permanent 75,000-seat venue.

More info at link including a design image, mentions retractable roof and steeper seating. Stadium looks amazing, modern and will truly bolster our game.

The clubs have organised their own meeting in Sydney on Friday to form a united front that they hope will convince the NRL to backflip on its original plans

NRL clubs united for ANZ rebuild actually puts ANZ at $1.90 and Alliance new stadium which will cost way more than the rumored 800million at $2.50.

ANZ if the better option of the design is done well...

I love look of the North and South ends built up and enclosed. It gives the stadium a more ominous look from the field and it really keeps the atmosphere in.

Where would origin and the Gramd Final be played whilst its getting refurbished? Id imagine it would take a fair while to do this?

With smart usage of material covers, capacity can be manipulated.
This is done in many stadiums around the world.

It could even drop down further if the capacity needs to be less.

This is the best result for Sydney and for the NRL.

- Origin at SFS and Melbourne.

- GF in Suncorp (or MCG if we're feeling brave...)

reducing the capacity to 75k is interesting. It would lower the threshold capacity that Suncorp would need to reach before they can regularly compete for hosting rights to the GF.

60-65k would probably be enough...

They probably have no choice but to reduce the capacity if you are increasing how steep the seating is. That is the best part of this. It will make it much better being at the ground to feel close to the action.

This stadium would become the most awesome stadium in Australia, bar none. The new steep seating gradation would make it like Suncorp on steroids.
