Amenities wise, Newcastle has had a shed load of money spent on it, re-doing to western stand and building the eastern stand on the hill. It is well down the list on "needs" upgrades in my opinion.

It only needs another $80mill to be a stadium worthy of big events like EPL teams etc. The second biggest city in the state. It would be good for tourism. Admittedly the Knights blundered by not getting onboard with the NRLW.

Not sure what you mean by any of this. MJS could easily already host EPL teams in preseason. The stadium is more than good enough. But I imagine that whenever an English team tours here, the obvious things for the NSW government to do it host them in one of the Sydney stadiums because that's where all the people and money are. For the same reason national teams rarely go to Newcastle.

From the tourism perspective that’s bad strategy. If say Leeds comes out and brings 2000 fans/tourists have them play at newcastle because you know they are then going to Sydney.
Whereas if they just play at WSS they hang around Sydney for 3 days and don’t get out to the rest of the state where surely the government wants to get some tourism.

Do you believe 2000 Leeds fans came over to Australia for some preseason game? Can guarantee most if not all of those people are based in Sydney or made the trip from elsewhere in Australia, and have absolutely no reason to undertake any extensive tourism beyond the game itself.

What is it with Panthers fans and travelling more than 15kms? Do you have cars out that way?
Panthers Stadium to Bankwest Stadium is 36km by road. Penrith's supporters have indicated quite emphatically they do not wish to play home games in North Parramatta. The club might as well fold as move to a ground 36km away.

So play out of your home ground, just don't expect the government to upgrade it!

From the ABC News website -

Sydney stadium builder Lendlease cannot sue NSW Government because it failed 'objectives', Minister says
By Nick Sas
Updated yesterday at 6:55pm

The company originally contracted to build the $729 million Sydney stadium then booted off the project has no grounds to sue the NSW State Government because it "failed objectives", the Sports Minister says.

As revealed by the ABC yesterday, multinational construction company Lendlease, which completed the "stage 1" demolition of the former stadium, will no longer be a part of the build — or stage 2 — after failing to meet the Government's objectives.

Speaking about the decision today, Sports Minister John Sidoti said Lendlease could not sue the Government because of its failure to meet those objectives.

Mr Sidoti would not reveal the "objectives" Lendlease failed to meet. However the ABC understands the builder was dumped over a cost blowout.

"The facts are very-simple," Mr Sidoti said.

"It's a two-stage process and they haven't met the objectives of the Government, so we're looking for someone who can."

The Sydney stadium re-build is part of the State Government's $2 billion stadiums package it took to the March state election.

It has spent $360m on Bankwest Stadium at Parramatta, which opened in April, and is promising $810 million for a refurbishment of Olympic Stadium in Homebush.

It also spent $200m buying back Olympic Stadium from a private operator

The talk of cost blowouts has led some political watchers to draw comparisons to the Sydney CBD light rail project.

The NSW Government last month settled a year-long legal dispute with construction company Acciona over the project, agreeing to a $576 million compensation payout. It brought the total cost to more than $3 billion — almost double the original $1.6 billion budget.

Mr Sidoti said there were "lots of figures being speculated" about the cost of the stadium project — and the suspected cost blowout from Lendlease.

But he gave a guarantee the project would come in at its original $729 million budget.

"The time frames have not changed, the costings have not changed," he said.

"It will be delivered on time and on budget."

NSW Labor has described the process as "a shambles".

The ground is home for NRL side Sydney Roosters. Coach Trent Robinson said although the team would like to get back to its home turf sooner, he trusted the State Government's decision.

"Obviously [to get back sooner] is the ideal," he said.

"But I know they've done that [changed builders] for a reason, and budget's been a big talk in the re-building of [Sydney stadium]."

The project is set to be complete in 2023.

So Lendlease build stadiums all over the world (and in the very recent past BankWest) and they think its going to cost $X and the govt wants it built for $Y.

I’m going to believe the people with the experience in actually delivering projects.

The stadium as designed cannot be built for the price the govt “believe”.

How much did Lendlease quote for that stadium? Because that number is going to be close to the real cost of the stadium.

So lets go $850M for the project. Its closing on a per seat cost of close to double that of Bankwest. It must have some of the best facilities on the planet.

So why does it need those facilities? Who can access them?

I wished we won the World Cup bid instead of Qatar, just so after the tournament we've be left with all these new stadiums/renovated stadiums to play with. I'm sure the national/state government would of had no worries spending >$1m for each including surroundings

I would guess that is the problem, they have given a costing and have failed to meet that costing, its been reported that they were already over budget!

Is it too late to pull out of the 2020 GF @ the SCG? If the NRL actually had a set, they’d be announcing Suncorp at the GF venue this week

Lendlease were given a design/brief and a budget. I suspect that a company with their history of major projects has a pretty good system for costing their jobs. If they quoted something its probably going to be close to the actual cost. Don’t expect other major firms to be too far away from that and if they are, expect the project to run over budget.

The Government has already said they failed to meet expectations in the contract, I would say Lendlease agreed to costings for at least the demo stage and have failed to meet those costings. The project is apparently already over budget!

Hot tip- there will be a lot more big games played there.

The SFS ain't getting rebuilt- at least as it was meant to be.

Probably should have just kept it in hindsight. If only we'd known.
