The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

No it is not just me. I just get upset with those that say billions should be spent to build a stadium that is too big for its tenants, 2 stadiums within 5 km of each other, and then say that nobody else should have money spent on them because there are 3 stadiums in Sydney.
How about we make SFS a 20000 seat stadium and then build 40000 seat stadium in the west and tell SFC and the Waratahs they have to play there? It is the same logic as telling Penrith they should kill off their following and move to parramatta. There is no connection between parramatta and Penrith spiritually, culturally, sporting or otherwise.

Penrith should gradually relocate to Perth. Firstly change the name to Western Panthers. Then do a deal with the NRL and WA government to shift 4 games over there. Then 6 etc. The brand Panthers is what is important not Penrith. They could play games against Sydney teams at Bankwest which would retain the link to the area.

Unlike building a 40000 seat stadium for a team that draws more than 15000 maybe twice a year not counting Anzac Day!
But thats no the point. The point is that the stadium is in a location where it can accommodate concerts and other sporting events and codes regardless of how many people attend Roosters games. No ones going to travel 2 hours west from Sydney to watch the Wallabies play South Africa, or attend a concert when they could just stay at home. While if it was say 20 minutes away with multiple sources of public transport, then it will be more attractive. Bankwest will pay dividends as Parra is quickly becoming another Sydney CBD, so therefore a larger population, and more sources of revenue through different events that can attract the capacity. Theres no point of publicly funding a large stadium to only host the Panthers and a few other exhibition games. I'd think Newcastle would get a new stadium before Penrith anyways.

I don't get how it's so difficult to understand?

Also, the elephant in the room is that Penrith Stadium is probably the best suburban ground in Sydney as is. It is completely fit for purpose - ie, a single tenant ground - and nobody has a gun to the Panthers head telling them to relocate to ANZ or BankWest.

You’ve chosen to live on the fringe of the city. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever to have a multipurpose venue for concerts and internationals away from either the CBD or the geographical heart of the city. If you don’t want to go to other stadiums, then don’t go. I bet plenty will though.

Penrith had state and federal funding for the western stand extension. I believe there is a sewer line running under the southern hill, if they built a stand there the pipe would cost a fair bit for relocation. I get everyone’s argument for and against $$ money being spent at penrith. If it’s not going to happen via the gov, maybe the Panthers group might need to put their hands in their deep pockets and pony up and put some of their own money into some upgrades.

Perth already have the Wildcats in basketball, so they love a cat-named team already.. yeah, could work hehehe ;)

Seriously though, if you wanted to be ruthless with the "suburban ground" clubs, you could say...
* Penrith to Perth (as above)
* Dragons to Wollongong full time
* Manly to be demoted to NSW Cup, Roosters get the North Shore & beaches as their feeder area
* Sharks to the Central Coast or Adelaide.

(Edit:

Just for the record, that would leave the following 5 teams in Sydney:

* Eels & Tigers playing out of Bankwest
* Bulldogs & Rabbitohs playing out of redeveloped ANZ Stadium in "club mode".
* Roosters playing out of new SFS

Though I honestly think Souths at new SFS makes more sense than ANZ for them. Closer to their traditional territory.)

Never happen, mind you...

So I’m at Canberra Stadium again as a neutral and for my first time here for an arvo game - it’s way better.

Good layout with the lower bowl, easy to to walk around. Ticket price was fine for $30 to sit pretty much anywhere down stairs. Plenty of food options, but lol paying 50c for sauce.

Of course the draw back is that it’s so dependent on the weather. Not too bad in the sun today but wind has a bite to it.

The stadium should of course be rebuilt in town. 20k-25k stadiums should be the norm. Fully seated, fully covered and easily accessible.

Ideally Panthers would upgrade the stadium one stand at a time ala Newcastle. Probably through a combination of panthers club funding, state Govt and maybe nrl kicking some in. Wollongong and shark park could follow a similar route. Manly who knows? the ground is so poor it’s hard to see anything other than a new stadium or relocation. Dragons to move 3 games to new allianz, 8 in gong and 1 on road. Kogarah for retro round if must.
Wests and dogs to bankwest full time,
Souths to allianz.
Fooff anz altogether for club games.

Exactly I wouldn’t be complaining if Souths were playing in a stadium like that. It’s a million times better than ANZ is and will be after it’s renovations for normal club games.

Rooster8 - so the million or so who live west of Parramatta should have to travel 2 hours to concerts etc so that you don’t have to?
T-Boon - pull your head in. The Roosters, Souths, Sharks, or Manly should all relocate before you take a NRL club out of the biggest and best nursery in the country.
Flippikat - see above!
Perth Red - whilst this is a reasonable way ahead why shouldn’t the state government put a fist full of cash to improve the ground. We are not asking for a knockdown/rebuild like SFS, just upgrade it to reasonably modern standards. It services as big an area and as many people as BankWest does!
Pommy - but why shouldn’t it be made better for the people of western Sydney?

"West of Parramatta" is a often cited as a fast growing region - but it has started from a smaller base, and covers a much larger area. Despite strong expected growth, the widespread region will still pale in comparison to the areas in the east (population-wise), in 15-20 years.

If the area was much more concentrated then there would be a stronger argument for an outer west stadium. But it isn't, and won't be for the foreseeable future.

*And I know that dwelling counts aren't the perfect indicator of population, but it still gives a good indication of the relative "sparseness" of the greater region.

The people of western Sydney have an amazing new stadium, the best in the nation when it comes to rectangular.
Maybe you’ve heard of it, it’s called western Sydney stadium. There’s no need for the federal government to build a Liverpool stadium, Blacktown stadium, Penrith stadium.

Penrith has a larger catchment than just the Greater Penrith on your maps. It also covers the Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Blacktown areas.
Regardless of your stats the region still deserves having government money spent on an upgrade as much any other area.

Sssshhhhhhh he doesn't want to hear that, in his mind there is a deserted wasteland between Parramatta and Penrith!

It is closer to SFS than Penrith. So we don’t need a new SFS or ANZ?
Let’s just ignore everybody west of Parramatta!

You’re making it sound like the Berlin Wall is running though the city with red army positioned in machine gun nests to stop you visiting.
