if they rebuild it, it can have a good atmosphere. it wouldn't need to be full. you just close the top levels so everyone is close together on the bottom level



i doubt it. it will be good for the eels though. i think more clubs would use a rebuilt anz stadium, which has much more parking and is much closer to the train station

It's a 83.5k capacity. Most club games are sub 25k. It won't have a good atmosphere with the top tier closed off, it will always look, sound and feel like a 1/4 full stadium and present the sport as one that has little support. Suncorp works because it is usually 80% full.

Govts love to build big white elephant projects as some sort of macho look how great we are edifices. The money being spent could have sorted rectangular club sports in Sydney out for the next 30-40 years if spent wisely. Reconfigured ANZ for finals and big event games. New 35k club stadium in Moore park with Improved. road and public transport options, Western Sydney stadium at parra and boutique stadiums or new stands for Cronulla, manly and Penrith.

Instead Sydney is going to,spend $1.2billion and end up with one decent club stadium. Crazy.

What should have been:
35k western Sydney stadium $350mill
35k inner city stadium Moore park $350mill
ANZ reconfigured $250mill
Manly 22k stadium $150million
New Cronulla main and end stand $75million
Penrith upgrade $75million

You could then have decent facilities for just about every rectangular sport club in Sydney, address the localised nature of Sydney and still have a modern super stadium for big events.

Just flew over coopers stadium on my way into Adelaide. Looks a half decent stadium, seems to be a bit in the middle of an industrial estate though? Is that where the Rams played? The stands look seriously steep! Only one is roofed though.

It sure is, and yep, the stands have a wonderfully steep pitch. Makes for great viewing

Right. You've been to Sydney? The improved rd and public transit options at Moore park will cost more than the budget for all the stadiums. 10 or 12 times more. And that's just for the roads. Most of the traffic needs to go west. Getting it there is no easy or cheap task. You are looking at 20kms of 6 lane tunnels. That doesn't include the vast amount of work needed in and around Moore park.

The only sensible public transit solution is heavy rail. So that would be a 2 km spur from central, all underground. So we can add 300 - 600 mil for that little project.

Then 1.2 billion on the stadiums.

So let's say $14 billion. So a few thousand people might go to a footy game slightly more often than they do, in a stadium with a mid range capacity

So your little suggestion is actually immensely expensive and totally impractical.

It's more sensible to either reconfigure or rebuild ANZ, refurb Allianz and Parra and save 12.8B

That title got me f*cking upset, but its not a terrible idea.

Yes, Betts' advice also said Allianz was in need of work. But the solution to that could be found in a cheaper $300 million refurbishment over the next decade or so rather than the construction of an entirely new venue.

Armed with Betts' advice, Baird has since asked the NRL if if it would prefer if the government spent the bulk of about $1 billion for new stadiums on turning ANZ Stadium at Homebush into a premium rectangular venue.

I would like to see the plan for the rectangular ANZ though, it could be great or terrible...

Obviously tear out the North and South stands, but id like to know if it was possible to tear down the Eastern stand and do a rebuild 50m in (even if it meant reducing the capacity, it would improve the veiw from the east and west.)

The investment ensures the NRL, on behalf of its fans, is part of the discussions around delivering a world-class fan experience and a purpose built, rectangular stadium that befits Sydney's status as a leading Australian and global city.
The NRL's upfront funding partnership with Allianz was aimed at securing rugby league fans a seat at the design table to assist meet critical deadlines for government funding.
The NRL has negotiated with the Trust that the $750 000 upfront investment will be recouped once funding for the upgrade is finalised.

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea... it would be perfect central to everything... And turn SFS either into a park or a small boutquie ground like redfern oval.

i just feel that sydney should have at least 1 large stadium that is a proper rectangular stadium. the other sydney stadiums only need upgrades. why does penrith need a $75,000,000 upgrade?

yes it looks like a good stadium. the rams played there and adelaide united in the a-league plays there

ANZ reconfigured $250mill Yes a must.
Manly 22k stadium $150million One team stadium, not return on investment for state Gov, never happen.
New Cronulla main and end stand $75million, Cronulla own stadium, State moneys not for private enterprise.
Penrith upgrade $75million, Dont fill stadium as is and only used in winter, no return on investment for state Gov.

You could then have decent facilities for just about every rectangular sport club in Sydney, address the localised nature of Sydney and still have a modern super stadium for big events.

NRL is one of three codes that use the ground. The corporate, food/beverage and toilet facilities are dire.

a rebuild would be about quality rather than size...

I wouldnt be against reducing it to 30/35k if it meant AAMI stadium level quality.
