The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

I think it'll end up being ANZ Stadium & the SCG that get the upgrades...
As long as ANZ Stadium is made world class I don't really mind if they throw the leftovers to the SCG.
If that ends up being the case, we'll probably see Easts bring a few games out West.

If SCG gets the leftovers they’re going to have a lot of explaining to do after the song and dance they made about Allianz stadium safety.

Plus they’re going to have 3 pissed off tenants.

Plenty type Olympic oval grounds, like Roma F/c famous club in Serie A
https://www.google.com.au/search?tb...biw=1400&bih=745&dpr=1.2#imgrc=7xMJExT7B3D0iM:
Tens to hundred of these are around the world.

Roma are building a purpose built football stadium.

Even they know ovals are shit for game day experience.

Olympic style stadiums are common throughout the world. For Nrl and football purposes, built rectangular grounds are SUPERB.
By the way Stadium DELL ROMA is experiencing similar type problems......Quote
"
On 2 February 2017, the Region of Lazio and the mayor of Rome rejected the proposal to build a new stadium,[8] however, the proposal was later approved on 24 February after final review of the stadium's design adjustments.[9]

In August 2017, the stadium hit another delay, with a new planning process beginning in September.[10] Roma subsequently renewed their lease with the Stadio Olimpico until 2020.[11]"

Is there a deadline for them to announce their decision on this, or can it drag on indefinitely?

No deadline. Pretty sure the NRL agreement with the govt just stipulates “once ANZ has been finished”

The concern is they drag it out until after the election, we then lose a big advantage

No point fighting the fight now that the AFL are now jumping up and down. Fact is no Australian Sport can compete with what they want. No sport comes close to the AFL when it comes to political pull.

Are you serious?

If they have so much political pull in NSW they’d have stitched up the SCG and spotless stadium upgrades long ago.

Yeah they’re better at politics than the NRL, but this is still NSW and popularity matters.

I wouldn't overstate the AFL's influence here, it's coming from the trust. Just more political games by Ayres trying to gather justification for prioritising moore park over Homebush. He's probably playing for a false compromise whereby the SFS gets built first, but guarantees ANZ being made a permanent rectangular stadium, thinking we will all be soo grateful to just go along with it. If anything, its just more desperation, Cabinet isn't going to go along with it and the longer it plays out the more it becomes an election issue. Gladys is going to have to call time on Ayres campaigning and make a decision very quickly, or questions will start being asked of her leadership.

I’m not so sure.

I think the AFL & Cricket Aus may have gone on their own here.

Reason being I think the SCG trust are smart enough to know they can’t get both Allianz & the SCG done in this round, and the trust have already spent a lot of effort to convince their 3 tentants of the Allianz rebuild. So much so they formed a group to lobby the govt.

If the trust then pivot to the SCG over Allianz they’re going to have some angry teams on their hands.

I meant SFS, not SCG.

You'd have to think Greenberg's reign as CEO is going to rest on this to some degree. If it goes t1ts up and AFL get their way, or even if Allianz gets most of the money, he is going to look a total fool after his media comments. I am sure he is lobbying hard knowing his job may be dependent on it!

I respect him for going out on a limb with his comments...

Youre right that he has put himself into a position that is hard to back down from, but the NSW Gov will be aware of this as well. He is making it very clear that the 20-year GF agreement is dependent of the EXACT deal done last year.

Better than David "you cant blame AFL for wanting the money, hahah" Gallop.

Why the AFL wants plans to redevelop ANZ Stadium dumped

The Daily Telegraph
October 25, 2017 1:54pm

THESE are the five points the AFL is using to brazenly lobby the NSW Government to abandon plans for ANZ Stadium’s redevelopment into a rectangular venue.

Instead, the AFL is pushing for SCG upgrades to be prioritised and ANZ Stadium to be refurbished and maintained as an oval-shaped venue.

The audacious bid comes despite the AFL and the Sydney Swans virtually abandoning the Olympic Stadium over the past 12 months as the game struggles to fill neighbouring Spotless Stadium, even for elimination finals matches.

A letter from AFL supremo Gillon McLachlan to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, obtained exclusively by The Daily Telegraph, outlines five reasons why ANZ should be maintained in it’s current form in the looming $1.6 billion stadiums allocation.

They include:

-Completion of the SCG including the redevelopment of the Brewongle-Churchill Stands ahead of the 2022 Ashes Series and the O’Reilly Stand as per the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust’s current masterplan;

-[Upgrades to the Moore Park precinct are] a prerequisite to enable the Swans to create a professional women’s team in the AFLW competition, to support their Youth Girls Academy and for local community use;

-Completion of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW masterplan for Spotless Stadium, including a new grandstand at the Northern End of the venue, increasing capacity to circa 30,000-35,000;

-Upgrade the GWS Giants training and administration facility to accommodate their AFLW team, to support their Youth Girls Academy and for local community use;

-Maintain the ability for ANZ Stadium to host oval sports where large crowds are expected (i.e. 60,022 for Sydney Swans v GWS Giants Sydney Derby in 2016 AFL Final Series).

The NRL has responded by warning the city could lose a 20-year guarantee to host the grand final, as well as State of Origin matches, if a Memorandum of Understanding they have with the NSW Government to make the transformation of ANZ Stadium into a world-class rectangular venue the No. 1 priority is broken.

Fans in Sydney also reacted angrily to the AFL’s proposal to abandon ANZ Stadium’s transformation into a rectangular venue.

The AFL are so arrogant I cannot believe it,” John wrote on dailytelegraph.com.au.

“Could you imagine the outcry in Bleak City if the NRL stuck their nose into the Victorian Government to try to sway their decision to reconfigure their football grounds including the MCG so they could play rugby league there?”

Others agreed.

“The sheer greed of the AFL is unbelievable,” Neil wrote. “Over the last decade or so 75 per cent of the $500m spent on stadium infrastructure in Sydney has been spent to their advantage.”

“The SCG has just been upgraded — these guys are unbelievable,” said Rich.

“Clever! AFL can see if they keep the grounds big, they look bad empty for NRL. Nasty tactics,” wrote James.

These comments are pretty spot on

“Could you imagine the outcry in Bleak City if the NRL stuck their nose into the Victorian Government to try to sway their decision to reconfigure their football grounds including the MCG so they could play rugby league there?”

Forget reconfigs. Docklands was originally meant to be rectangular before the AFL stumped cash. Took us 20 years to get our stadium.

been upgraded — these guys are unbelievable,” said Rich.

“Clever! AFL can see if they keep the grounds big, they look bad empty for NRL. Nasty tactics,” wrote James.

I couldn't believe it reading this article on the way home.

What do the AFL even want with the place? The Swans don't want to play there and Giants will never never ever sell even half the seats unless playing the Swans

It has to be the AFL trying to play spoiler to the NRL or position for more (why?? when compared to how recent they have had them compared to everywhere else) SCG upgrades

They finally have a plan to make ANZ a reasonable place to watch games from ... Sigh

At least Parra got started before any shenanigans from down here began

What about the 62000 who attended the Wanderers derby vs SFC? And the shit experience it was watching in that oval stadium?
What about every State of Origin match? Same deal.
What about every NRL Grand Final?
Wallabies matches?
Socceroos matches?
Over 80000 at two Arsenal games and 70000 at a Liverpool game?
All rectangular field sports whose fans have their viewing experience compromised because f**kwit Mexicans think they have a right to keep the place oval shaped just in case maybe once in a decade they might play a game there.
They can f**k right off now, and if this govt doesn't tell them this, they can f**k right off now as well.
