I don't really care if the Grand Final goes to Melbourne. I doubt it will go to Brisbane, their stadium holds 30,000 less. The game would be a laughing stock, and would seek to blame others, but that's their problem.

This mess goes back to the plans post Olympics for what is now known as ANZ Stadium. post Olympics, it was supposed to become a rectangular stadium. However the AFL kicked in a few bucks and persuaded then then Labor Government to keep it as multi-configurable. So now the biggest stadium in NSW is not used at all by AFL and is not great for those codes which use a rectangular stadium, who use it the most.

That is why the original stadium deal was for ANZ to be done first, with any left over money spent on the SFS. This is where the SCG Trust and Stuart Ayres screwed the NRL and other sports over by getting the Government to change this arrangement.

On a side note, no matter how much was spent on its construction, Stadiums do not last forever without funds being spent on their maintenance and upkeep.

It’s not used by any oval sports anymore, absolute failure.

Channel 9 takes dramatic step of playing favourites in NRL stadium war

The hits keep coming for NSW opposition leader Michael Daley after Channel 9 took the dramatic step of taking a public stance on the raging Sydney stadium debate.

After a turbulent week in which Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) chairman Peter Beattie threatened to sell the NRL grand final to a rival state, Daley’s counter-proposal to the NSW Government’s $1.5 billion stadium strategy came under fire again on Monday when Nine came out swinging in favour of Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s plan to re-build Allianz Stadium and upgrade ANZ Stadium.

It comes after Daley announced recently Labor will scrap the Government’s stadium plans if elected on March 23.

However, Allianz Stadium’s $730 million re-build in association with the SCG Trust is scheduled to commence before NSW goes to the polls.

Daley’s declarations means the NSW Government will have violated the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the NRL and the NSW Government for the NRL grand final to be played in Sydney for the next 25 years.

Daley has since denied Labor’s move would jeopardise the NRL grand final’s future in Sydney, despite Beattie last week reportedly meeting with Queensland Tourism Minister Kate Jones to discuss hosting future NRL grand finals in Brisbane.

High profile SCG Trust member Alan Jones last week accused Daley of “breathtaking ignorance”.

NSW Rugby chief executive Andrew Hore also criticised Daley’s failure to communicate his plans to key NSW stadium stakeholders, including the NSW Waratahs.

Now Nine has joined in.

“Sydney is a world class city that needs world class stadia,” Nine CEO Hugh Marks said in a statement.

“The NRL is NSW’s premier sporting competition and needs modern facilities to continue to grow and thrive. Parramatta and the Greater West will be well catered for with the new Western Sydney Stadium to open early next year.

“Central Sydney also requires the same level of modern well equipped facilities to service the North, South and East of Sydney. Nine wants to showcase NRL as a great national sport and we can only do this with the best stadia as the setting.”

Daley responded to the widespread public criticism by declaring he won’t be “bullied or intimidated by the NRL”.

“If Todd Greenberg and his mates decide to take the Grand Final out of Sydney then it is on him,” Daley told Fairfax Media.

“They are going to have to explain to their loyal NSW fans why they are taking the game out of the state.”

Beattie has since insisted it is no empty threat that the NRL will move the season’s September finale interstate.

“Of course we are serious when we say we will take the game elsewhere,” Beattie told The Daily Telegraph.

“Kate Jones asked me if this was a genuine option and I said it was.

“We have to do what’s best for the game and the fans. And we will do that”.

Going by experience, me and the wife went to the Sydney origin, stayed 2 nights, ate out, used buses and taxis to get around, shopped in the city. Including the SOO tickets, the weekend probably cost $1500.

For the grand final it was a similar amount.

Would it fair that on average, the 80,000 people attending an event would roughly spend a minimum of $300 on the event(tickets,transport, food and drinks) up to $700 for those needing accommodation and other expenses, so at an average of $500 a person and being conservative, could a sold out event generate $40m?

I think that would be a pretty fair summation. Those figures look pretty good, on the conservative side of things.

If you don’t invest in keeping your club sized rectangular stadium up to date and lose your NRL franchise then you lose your chance at hosting Grand Finals, no matter how nice your big event super stadium. I believe the NFL have the same policy for allocating the Super Bowl which is why it’s never hosted in cities like San Antonio, Vegas or until recently, Los Angeles. After losing their franchises, San Diego and St. Louis are now in this boat.

Im pretty sure Perth and Adelaide would be happy to host and subsidise NRL teams, the problem is that the NRL isnt giving out new licences and the existing clubs arent keen on moving...

No, but a 35-40k stadium with a freakin roof would be perfect.

In some ways I hope that they knock down the SFS and then Labor kibosh's the building of the new one. Then the site just sits there for a year or two while the wankers argue and play their dicky little to and fro games. During this skirmish time, the SCG Trust falls victim and is dismantled/sacked.

Then the real stakeholders, all the rectangular playing sports, Government and the fans come to a compromise of sorts, but this time some bright spark/s convinces them that the best bleeding possible site and size would be a 35-40k roofed Stadium above Central Station. Wow now I'm wet.

Then I realised I just got slapped in the face with a glass of cold water known as reality and woke up.

I suspect this is essentially how it will play out if Labor get elected. Hole in ground, new government cancels $780m too big stadium. Inquries launched, much scandal uncovered at previous government’s expense. Eventually new smaller “budget” stadium in mould of WSS agreed for ~$400m after inquiry acknowledges need for some sort of inner city venue. Abolition of SCG Trust and/or move to Central Station are optional parts of the saga. Delay 1-2 years, at least one Grand Final played interstate, massive extra compensation pay outs to current tenants.
