The BRL was relegated to second-tier status because the NSWRL had access to pokies since the 1950s. Queensland clubs didn't get the right to use pokies until the 1990s. Take away the pokies revenue that NSWRL clubs had over their counterparts in the BRL until the 1990s and the NSWRL never would have been able to expand like it did between 1982 until 1995.
The only reason we still have nine clubs in Sydney is because broadcast revenue, which wouldn't be as high without high-rating non-NSW clubs like the Broncos, Storm and Cowboys, allows our game to command enough money to keep players from jumping to RU while propping up unviable clubs like Cronulla and Manly. The money squandered keeping small Sydney clubs alive would be better spent at the grassroots level to counter the incursions AwFuL has made over the last 40 years, as it will go a long way to determining if our game remains a mainstream sport in this country in 2050 or becomes a niche game like RU.
AwFuL can spend millions of dollars on developing their game across Australia because their Melbourne-based clubs draw far more revenue from memberships and gate-receipts and, their broadcast deal is richer than ours, allowing them to have a bigger salary cap and convert the next generation of kids to their stupid game. While our game wastes its money on appeasing dumb old drunks from Sutherland and Northern Beaches who think it's 1967, AwFuL is slowly converting their children and grandchildren into Swans fans. This is going to come back and haunt our game in 30 years time. RU is cashed up around the world and will be in a position to plunder our best players when we become a niche sport, which is a real possibility because there just aren't enough young fans to replace the older ones who will die off over the next 30 years.
