Are you referring to Perth or rugby league junior pathways in general? Or more precisely, are you referring to the grades directly below first grade or the structures beneath that?

A bit of both.

Like do the Allied States have their comp anymore?

Im not being critical about AFLs efforts on expansion or their national footprint, just stating that Australian Football codes and its population comparing it to America and its Football codes and population
Melbourne has four times as many AwFuL clubs than New York City has NFL clubs, yet the average attendances between them aren't that much different. In 2019 Richmond averaged almost 60k and Collingwood averaged almost 59k in a city half the size of NYC.

Essendon averaged more than 47k and Carlton 46k.

If four AwFuL clubs can do this in a city smaller than Sydney, then why are Sydney's NRL crowds so shit?

Why do the Swans average over 30k at the SCG in an RL city when a stone's throw away at the SFS the Roosters - - who've been around since 1908 - - are lucky to get half that through the gate?

How many professional teams are in Townsville? Or Newcastle hell even Wollongong.
Having an NZ team brings in more than an Adelaide team would
98% of media advertising is in the 5 metro regions. Why do you think we are behind on overall revenue and media revenue despite being able to sell to nz?

What’s an allied state? Do you mean affiliated state? There is no affiliated states anymore except nswrl and qrl, all other states are owned and run by the nrl now. And yes WA has a growing and vibrant state league with 24 clubs inc lots of jnr teams, elite pathway programs, shs scholarship programs and an sg ball program. Ironically our jnr programs except sg ball have been largely unaffected.

Valid questions but i'd say AFL are the anomaly.
1. They outperform on both a local and global level; and
2. For such a silly game, its still referred to as a "professional" league.

The West Coast Eagles are just as big as the "big four" AwFuL clubs from Melbourne. If they can do it then in theory we should be able to as well. State of Origin proves we can do it. The problem is our game, outside of State of Origin and GF, doesn't have the same cultural status attached to it outside of its hardcore fanbase, hence the reason people watch it on TV in massive numbers but are reluctant to attend a game. It's like the glamour of the Olympics 100m sprints vs IAAF World Championships 100m sprints. Same sport, but viewers that couldn't care less about the IAAF World Championships as it doesn't have the same status.

Only in terms of number of teams to population. In most major wealthy cities the club/s in the main sport draw 24k plus crowds. Sydney ranks about 27th on the city rankings for its NRL avg attendance.

There are a number of factors influencing it but yes end of day it comes down to number of engaged and committed fans a club has. KO times, cost, transport, game day experience, form of team etc all are big influencers but if you are starting at a low base then the inconvenience factors whittle away at the attending fanbase until we are where we are. I think overall the game just isnt as popular in most cities as it could and should be. Newcastle is probably the only city that is pulling its weight.

Our tv audiences kind of are a smoke screen when you look at them in total, when you break them down into areas some cities are not very flash at all and our NSW regional numbers boost significantly the lack of viewers in Sydney. For all the games money over the last ten years it seems to have failed to build its fanbase to any great significance.

Townsville has really fallen away over the last 10 years. It should be drawing a minimum of 20k per match.

The Queensland Gov should offer free tickets to locals who capture cane toads. The legs of cane toads taste like chicken, so they could be marinated in Australian honey and sold at the tuckshop of Lang Park. The leather from the cane toads can be dyed maroon and turned into wallets with the Queensland Maroons logo in the centre.

Thanks for proving my point re travel times, and very few freo fans live in fremantle, most are further south heading all the way to mandurah.
canterbury to central is a 19min train journey. We aren’t talking. Massive distances here lol

cronulla would be the outlier but no one is suggesting they should move all games there, just the ones with potential to draw more than 25k if ran right

Oh please, Central isn't where the Stadium is. They built it in the wrong place again, Moore Park. Sure the public transport is slightly better then it used to be but it is still a hassle and overall sh*t for most to do and time consuming for all but the locals. The commuters from further out suburbs will not put themselves through the hassle on a regular or even semi regular rate especially in the dead of winter and with kids in toe.

They blew it when they didn't even look at the over Central Station option. All they can ask for now long term(after the initial curiosity hype) is a slight bump in the average crowds of the Chooks and Rabbitohs who will be the two main tenants long term.

Sydney is a very lazy and unforgiving city. You either build it in the fans backyards or right next to a main line train station. Otherwise you will be building a white elephant more or less. Add to that you have way to many teams all vying for support, 9 RL teams and 2 AFL teams going head to head and a bunch of other teams(Union and Soccer) overlapping. We are very picky and set in our ways. The NRL has also dropped the ball in promoting the game as a fresh and exciting product. It feels stale to many now. All these little thing matter and are a great reason for a lazy only half interested fan base to decide to stay home and spend their cash else where.

The NRL needs to seduce its audience in Sydney more then in any other city in the country and instead the clubs in particular and the ARLC just give lip service but do very little collectively to work together with new ideas and innervation to bring excitement and fresh appeal back to the sport. The new stadiums and upgrades will certainly help somewhat, but don't expect massive bumps in crowds long term. It just won't happen unless there is a new mindset at the top of the game and all the execs running club land jump on board and learn that rowing together makes it much easier and effective to get to our desired destination.

In a perfect world we would have Manly engaging all of the North Shore and 2 less teams in Sydney either by extinction, merger or relocation(my preferred option). But again those sorts of decisions are way to professional and therefore hard for head office to even think of seriously let alone make them. We need a tyrant running the game that will do whatever it takes, but the clubs have seen to it that that never happens.

So we just limp along, hoping natural forces go our way.

I think the PT to Moore park is significantly better. The problem is the NRL doesnt really even try to market itself to the people who could take advantage of it (people who wear ties etc).

utter rubbish again from our RL hating clown

take Last nights ratings & lets see ( both codes premiers in action ) all sydney v all melb

the NRL shown nationally
around 1.2 million when all platforms are included
about 600K of them from Sydney

the awful had 2 games , one shown in all markets except SA , that sydney NRL figure was
every bit , possibly even a few more then melbournians watching the derps & misses
they got about 800K ( hell only 77K combined watched the game in the other 3 capitals ) , & even if all markets had taken the same game would not have cracked a million

you continue posting utter crap where ever you go
its quite hilarious

RL could certainly do with getting stronger in Sydney! Tv audiences and attendances are pretty ordinary for a city that size that's supposedly the heartland of the game. But we digress from stadiums, though its all linked and if it would be better to have the smith approach with 3 or 4 amazing stadiums for clubs to share and shared big games at big stadiums, or if the Vlandys approach will prove better with some clubs getting new stadiums and others getting some upgrades to their suburban grounds. I dont see a lot of movement in Sydney crowds with the Vlandys approach but time will tell.

And you won't. This strategy is not designed to create a massive increase in crowd averages. It is solely designed to fill well designed rectangular RL friendly small to mid level sized stadiums with near capacity crowds so as the game day experience and TV watching public enjoyable a much more atmospheric and exciting product like the TV execs have been requesting and wanting for a while now. Remember who pays the bills.

I agree with this tactic for the time being anyway. We need to change things up and presenting a better product at the ground and on the tele with the added bonus of tickets maybe being harder to come by and therefore a luxury item can only be a good first step in moving the needle just a little and shifting the mindset of the average punter. We need to present the product in near full stadiums(get rid of that ugly hill mentality and visual) and give it a look that is cool and exciting, otherwise we will only be attracting the same people we have been attracting. We need to make it fresh, exciting and a buzz to be there. Also the added bonus of being in smaller or mid size shiny new stadiums is there isn't a nose bleed seat in the house. That alone is a great way to market the sh*t out of it.

If Moore Park is so hard to get to, how do the Swans draw 36K and big crowds for Test Cricket. Surely the problem is the only Easts play home games there. Get Souths and other clubs playing some home games there. Why can't they replicate the Swans crowds? Or are the inner/middle suburbs now the domain only of AFL and Cricket fans?
