It’ll all depend on how many people around the world are watching due to time zones. The Sydney Olympics had poor viewership because of it. However, China has grown heaps since then and their living standards with it so you’d have to think that’s possibly another 50/100 (who the f**k knows) million television sets tuning into WWC next year?

I think you are giving FIFA a little too much credit. For example, if there was any strategy in what they were doing, India would have been a million times better choice than Qatar if they had to play a World Cup in that general area of the world

IIRC, the FFA were up to their necks with the bidding process to the point where they took an eye off the A League and they weren't on the same page with the AFL.

Fourthly, with funding, it depends on when Aus/NZ bid for it? Assuming they ever bid for the WC, you would assess the current state of the stadiums and how much funding is needed at the time of the bid launch.

And lastly, the political side of dealing with FIFA members. When they bid for 2022, Australia was very naive politically and were taken for a ride.

Used to be 12, looks like they bent the rules for qatar surprise surprise! The next World Cup is significantly expanding nations involved and will use 16 venues.

So we have one ticking the 80k box
none ticking the two 60k boxes
2 ticking the 40k plus box
let’s say we can get away with 8 that means upgrades to allianz and Suncorp if possible to 60k and 5 new 40k plus, or upgrades to 2 or 3 and 2 or 3 new ones. IF we can get away with 8.
Upgrading 25-30k stadiums to 40k when they were not designed for it is no cheap exercise.

allianz upgrade to 60k (not sure if the semi and final stadiums have to be in different cities?)

Then throw in infrastructure and training facilities.

that would be a good outcome, but I really can’t see Australia and nz stumping up the many billions to do it.

you think stadium prices will only increase 10% or so in the 7 or 8 years it will be until construction starts?
