It’ll all depend on how many people around the world are watching due to time zones. The Sydney Olympics had poor viewership because of it. However, China has grown heaps since then and their living standards with it so you’d have to think that’s possibly another 50/100 (who the f**k knows) million television sets tuning into WWC next year?
Just makes the argument for a World Cup in China even stronger

I think you are giving FIFA a little too much credit. For example, if there was any strategy in what they were doing, India would have been a million times better choice than Qatar if they had to play a World Cup in that general area of the world

No chance they overtake cricket

but China soccer is already big there and they are the worlds number 2 economy

In my previous post, I was kinda brutal, but I'll be optimistic here. Next year's WWC will provide a great opportunity to impress FIFA.

If the organization of the tournament is spot on with no controversy, crowds are great and the viewership across the world surprises FIFA due to the timezones, then the odds of Aus/NZ potentially jagging the men's version will shorten.

Asian Football is improvong all the time. Apart from Qatar, all other Asian sides have been fighting and getting results. In Australia's qualifying group, they had Saudi Arabia and Japan. Both of those sides have caused biggest upsets so far.

So if there is growth in Asia, then hopefully it results an increase in ratings, to the point where FIFA doesn't always rely on the European timezone.

do you think the states and fed govt will cough up the $20billiin plus needed for stadium development? Only way it would ever happen is if fifa allow ovals to be used and afl allowed it.

The first thing Aus/NZ have to do is to get some clarity on what time of the year the event would be held in. Is June/July a more permanent slot or is FIFA going to allow November/December from now on?

Secondly, Aus/NZ will also want to know the voting process. If it's a SMALL group of 24 FIFA exco members like last time around, then don't worry about it. Pull out.

Thirdly, set up a bidding committee with officials from both FA's and relevant government ministers from both countries. Plus throw in a few smart business people that know how to negotiate. IIRC, the FFA were up to their necks with the bidding process to the point where they took an eye off the A League and they weren't on the same page with the AFL.

Fourthly, with funding, it depends on when Aus/NZ bid for it? Assuming they ever bid for the WC, you would assess the current state of the stadiums and how much funding is needed at the time of the bid launch.

And lastly, the political side of dealing with FIFA members. When they bid for 2022, Australia was very naive politically and were taken for a ride.

End of day it still comes down to stadiums. If they allow ovals then it’s feasible. If they don’t then it isn’t. Pretty much that’s the start and end point for a bid decision.

Sydney Olympics cost $3bill, brisbanes expected to cost $5bill. A WC where we had to have 12 stadiums of 40k plus is going to cost an awful lot more, and leave us with a bunch of stadiums that sit more than half empty for most games afterwards Unless they can be reduced post the cup. Realistically your looking at $5bill plus for 4 new stadiums and another $5-10bill or so to get the other 7 stadiums up to spec, if they can be increased.
Then any other infrastructure spend across the country we’d need inc training facilities for each nation. Do we think the govt’s of the land would be up for that sort of spend for a one off sports tournament?

Is this the same level of finance research you bring to the TV rights thread?

Where do you get 20 billion from?

You need 8 rectangular stadium over 40,000:

You currently have:

1 Olympic Park 82,500
2 Sydney Football Stadium 40,000
3 Suncorp 52,500

The new Sydney Football Stadium cost 828 million, so let's lift it to 1 billion each for a new stadium.

Perth New - 1 billion
Adelaide New - 1 billion
Canberra New - 1 billion
Brisbane 2 New or Robina Upgrade - 1 billion
AAMI Park Upgrade - 500 million

4.5 billion, round up to 5 billion to upgrade facilities at Olympic and Suncorp ....

Used to be 12, looks like they bent the rules for qatar surprise surprise! The next World Cup is significantly expanding nations involved and will use 16 venues.

So we have one ticking the 80k box
none ticking the two 60k boxes
2 ticking the 40k plus box
let’s say we can get away with 8 that means upgrades to allianz and Suncorp if possible to 60k and 5 new 40k plus, or upgrades to 2 or 3 and 2 or 3 new ones. IF we can get away with 8.
Upgrading 25-30k stadiums to 40k when they were not designed for it is no cheap exercise.

let’s say we get away with 8, which I doubt for at least 48 nations taking part

anz upgrade
suncorp upgrade to 60k
allianz upgrade to 60k (not sure if the semi and final stadiums have to be in different cities?)
aami upgrade to 40k
perth new 40k stadium
Adelaide new 40k stadium
auckland new 40k stadium
wellington new 40k stadium

Then throw in infrastructure and training facilities.

that would be a good outcome, but I really can’t see Australia and nz stumping up the many billions to do it.

we are talking about a bid for 2034 at earliest with bids not expected to be reviewed until 2026 ish
you think stadium prices will only increase 10% or so in the 7 or 8 years it will be until construction starts?
