Where do you get 20 billion from?
You need 8 rectangular stadium over 40,000:
You currently have:
1 Olympic Park 82,500
2 Sydney Football Stadium 40,000
3 Suncorp 52,500
The new Sydney Football Stadium cost 828 million, so let's lift it to 1 billion each for a new stadium.
Perth New - 1 billion
Adelaide New - 1 billion
Canberra New - 1 billion
Brisbane 2 New or Robina Upgrade - 1 billion
AAMI Park Upgrade - 500 million
4.5 billion, round up to 5 billion to upgrade facilities at Olympic and Suncorp ....
Used to be 12, looks like they bent the rules for qatar surprise surprise! The next World Cup is significantly expanding nations involved and will use 16 venues.
So we have one ticking the 80k box
none ticking the two 60k boxes
2 ticking the 40k plus box
let’s say we can get away with 8 that means upgrades to allianz and Suncorp if possible to 60k and 5 new 40k plus, or upgrades to 2 or 3 and 2 or 3 new ones. IF we can get away with 8.
Upgrading 25-30k stadiums to 40k when they were not designed for it is no cheap exercise.
let’s say we get away with 8, which I doubt for at least 48 nations taking part
anz upgrade
suncorp upgrade to 60k
allianz upgrade to 60k (not sure if the semi and final stadiums have to be in different cities?)
aami upgrade to 40k
perth new 40k stadium
Adelaide new 40k stadium
auckland new 40k stadium
wellington new 40k stadium
Then throw in infrastructure and training facilities.
that would be a good outcome, but I really can’t see Australia and nz stumping up the many billions to do it.
we are talking about a bid for 2034 at earliest with bids not expected to be reviewed until 2026 ish
you think stadium prices will only increase 10% or so in the 7 or 8 years it will be until construction starts?
