Something to think about when talking about new stadiums, maintenance and upkeep of them. This story from what is happening in the US is a bit disturbing about a stadium that is only 7 years old -

US Bank Stadium is a particularly fancy stadium with lots of bells and whistles. I don't think we're at risk of seeing a stadium like it in Australia for the next fifty years.

But yes, you're correct - maintainence on these things is a real silent killer.

only if they bid
theres clowns in here saying they shouldn't have to seeing as they've built 1.6 bill worth of stadiums

Of course they will bid, The Corporates who are mostly based in Sydney will push for it to get it.

$15m a year for 10 years is far cheaper than stadium upgrades

it'll be 15 mill in 2023
& 30 Million in 2033

PVL won't be suckered into any long term deal at 15 mill for 10 years, it'll be a year by year thing til we get the stadiums fixed up as promised

Well obviously that’s a bs argument

Pete has to get the best deal out of this labor govt that ran on a no stadium policy

the nrl has ended up in a great position because the liberal party failed to honour the agreement

we’ve got the important stadia done, Penrith will get 300 million then sell the gf for 15 million pa

It’s not though

the stadia upgrades are assets they own and derive higher income from

the roi might not be great but it’s positive

I think there’s still a good lesson though- don’t build fancier stadia than you need to for the purpose. The more bells and whistles you include, the more maintenance you incur. Ask whether they’re actually necessary for an average club ground.

You look at AAMI Park in Melbourne. Did it really need a bubble roof structure?

AAMI I can actually understand having a bit of architectural flair to it because of its highly visible location. But you’d hope the future maintenance costs were taken into account when that design was chosen.

It won multiple architectural and engineering awards and governments etc like to brag about that sort of thing

The design of the roof also meant no pillars were needed, so unobstructed views, and also significantly less steel, so the extra cost would of evened out a little

The stupid thing about aami though is they paid extra to built it with foundations to support expansion (off the top of my head up to 50k I believe), but then built the stadium in a way that can not be easily expanded, mostly because of said roof

Generally Govts like colosseums they can brag about, not cardboard cut out boxes that float no ones boat. Must say I do love Optus and whilst its $1.2billion price tag is huge it is a venue the State is now proud of and is getting the useage to justify the price tag for the citizens of our fair city.
And yes there was lots of Govt bragging going on when it recently won a world stadiums award.

If Sydney only needed 2-3 stadiums it wouldn't be an issue. It s only because clubs want one each that its a problem.

Afl and cricket looking for more money for another scg upgrade

articles highlights how dated scg is vs other states and brisbane to get 7 billion soend for the Olympics
The new Premier Mims or whatever his name is better not approve anything for AFL since he's against spending on stadiums.

Sorry, point to me where anyone has said that?

My argument has been since the beginning that V'landys was never going to be satisfied with the stadium build and constantly uses the GF as a carrot. I haven't said anything about not bidding for the games. I've been arguing against the sheer idiocy of your point that a new government should have to honour a defeat governments policies.

It kinda feels like sabotage to the point of let's build a complicated said roof structure so that it would be very difficult to expand the grounds capacity down the track.
