Magic Round in Brisbane works because it's affordable to fly up from Sydney for the weekend and theres a huge RL community in Brisbane and regional QLD.

Throw in Suncorps sight lines, amenities, its location in the CBD and the weather this time of year in SEQ, why would you want to move it anywhere else?

I know that they have threatened to release MCC to the general public but I don't believe that they actually have. They didn't for the 2019 AFL prelim that sold out in about an hour - which ended up about 4.5k off capacity. I think the MCC would consider that more of a "special event" than an NRL grand final. IMO it's just lip service in an attempt to get them to show up.
special event as in not regular, the AFL GF is a regular fixture at the MCG, another poster in another thread said this exact scenario happened for the last origin game there, members had to opt in, if they didn't opt in their seats were sold

As opposed to your afl that has gone global.

I'm assuming your sport is willing to give the grand final to Sydney or Brisbane. Didn't think so.
My AFL?
ahaha never watched a full game in my life buddy, boring as batshit, its commendable though that their administration has somehow convinced people otherwise

meanwhile a good portion of our sports fans response to trying to grow the game is "nah, too hard"

substancially grow ?
I give you ratings for all fumbling game that wouldn't beat Bluey on TV in NSW & QLD
& crowds for the midgets & thuns that would barely fill a phonebox for home games if it weren't for expat sthners

save your lectures
when did i make a comparison to AFL?

my response is to the hesitation to grow RL into other states - nothing to do with the other code you closet fans all love bringing up

I'd assume not
just another reason we should capitalize on it and do it first

honestly name 1 downside to making money from turning the GF into a super bowl style event? other than "boo hoo I'm an entitled Sydney fan and want it to be close to me every year"

I am prepared to wait for Penrith, Want better than the current site offers. Especially when season tickets will rise as a result
Take the 300 million whilst it’s there but work with council and the feds for the rest

get the arlc involved if needs be and tell them not to agree with the nsw govt that unless it’s a full rebuild elsehwere it’s not acceptable

1. We're not America with large stadiums in large cities. We have one rectangular stadium that holds 800000, the next best is 52000.

2. Playing on ovals is a backward step.

MCC members don't have allocated seats unless they pre purchase, which I think you are thinking about. MCC members will always have an allocation for walk ups, usually about 7000-8500 for major/special/whatever superlative events - these will not be released to the general public nor will any of their allocation. MCC members pay up to $7k through their life just to become a full member, and then from there they pay their annual fee - the MCC will not strip this right of lottery to attend from them.

The MCC is really not going to open up their area for NRL GF fans, whether there is demand or not. They don't do it for AFL games when there is demand, so they certainly won't do it for the NRL.

MCC membership is about status and reeks of nothing more than that and classism.

Case in point why the RL has struggled to substancially grow outside of the north of 1 country and 2 states of another in over 100 years
Png, Tonga, samoa, fiji and France says hello

Canada was booming too till super league decided Toronto wasn’t a city that is worth anything to their comp

this might shock you but afl was well established in Sydney and Brisbane five years before the introduction of rugby league

PNG has a population over 9.425 million. Rugby league their fanatical national sport.Bigger population than Norway/Finland/Denmark/Serbia/Bulgaria.
Think the code has grown a little outside its boundaries.
In fact it was growing in Ukraine better than other European countries until Puke-in had his "special operation."

this was my point

time and time again we have opportunities in front of us but decide "nah, too hard"
then reading some of the shit some posters in here spew its not hard to see why the game takes this stance

they hide behind "oh you must be an AFL fan blah blah" when that code isn't even part of the discussion, but the truth is they must have 0 belief the game can be appealing to people outside the heartlands with a bit of time effort and money put in.
A lot of these entitled Sydney fans are I'd imagine the same ones who rarely ever venture out from their living room to watch a game anyway, but cry like a spoilt baby when someone mentions taking some things away.

I on the other hand personally think its the most enjoyable sport in the world to watch and just wish we had a strong administration that was able to consistently get it in front of as many new audiences as possible.

who is the real RL fan in these 2 scenarios?

Not a bad post

but imo Sydney fans are the most pro expansion

it’s the non Sydney fans who see expansion via killing off Sydney clubs

if it wasn’t for the nswrl expanding in the 80s and 90s there would be no nrl today

we get these pockets of natural growth but then do nothing to capitalize on it (of course in Ukraine's there's not much that can be done about that)

the fact we still don't have a set in stone international calendar is another example of failing to capitalize on growing the game, there's always talk but rarely sustained action, its bloody frustrating

Even if the MCC members (capacity 25k) was only half full, the crowd would still be bigger than ACCOR’s capacity. The NRL would more from a MCG GF than anywhere else, regardless of what the Vic Govt adds on top.

Yes, what you’ve said here is obvious and wasn’t the basis of the convo.
