So flicked on the Matildas friendly last night that was played at Marvel and despite there being a sell out crowd they didn't configure it in rectangular mode. Is there a count of how many times they have reconfigured it since they took it over?

Seriously we need to push the federal government for funding to turn the Accor site into the national rectangular stadium and tell AFL and cricket where to go.
It will be used as a reason to keep the stadiums oval. Fans turn up anyway

The Victorian Government would no doubt give funding to the AFL. As part of any future deal we do with the Victorian Government on State of Origin there should be a condition in the contract that allows us to use Marvel in rectangular mode if we book the ground - force the Victorian Government to go and negotiate with the AFL for us.
Marvel is privately owned by the AFL. SOO @ MCG has nothing to do with them.

It is a shame they won’t move the stands in during the AFL season, but for RL it is much, much better than any other oval stadium In Australia. Level 2 feels very close to the action. The early SOO games there were great under the roof.

If Storm wanted to play finals there they would be able to bring the stands in, as it is not used for AFL finals.

I agree that as far as oval stadiums go it's far better then the G or Optus, in terms of watching recentangular sports.

I too, used to get surprised (upset?) about how little they used the recentangular mode, but now realise that as it only caters for about 10k people in that mode, and they rest are just as far away as normal, then it's hardly a big deal.

that 10K are the premium sideline seats though and are largely the ones that provide an atmosphere of having an audience close to the action/sidelines for the players so I think it’s still pretty important.

Belmore you'd have to buy a few houses at the south end to make it happen.

Exactly. Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, UK, had the same issues. They couldn't expand the stadium due to housing around it. That's why at one stage Liverpool FC were looking to build a new stadium at Stanley Park. It was only a change in ownership, combined with the Council assisting in purchasing the surrounding homes, that saw Anfield's expansion go ahead. Even then it took years to achieve.

Belmore Oval is in similar circumstances to Anfield in terms of being landlocked by housing preventing any outward expansion. It also though has the added complication of having the railway line on its northern fence too.

Not sure if it was ever raised as a possible site but the current train station in Kingston at Canberra would be a potentially good location for a stadium.

Its certainly a big enough site, is a short walk from one of our entertainment/restaurant areas and has somewhat adequate public transport.

There's about 3-4 trains a week to/from Canberra so cant see why they cant move the out of date 1980s train terminal 1km up the road.railway.PNG

You could build a cantilevered stand over the rail line- engineering wise not at all difficult, though cost would obviously increase.

It's not quite that simple as on the northern side of the railway line is another street/road fronting onto multiple houses. There is just not enough room is the issue.

Knock down belmore for parkland and use the bigger parkland next door for a new ground
