If its part of a bigger strategy for NRl to co own and redevelop shark park then its no bad thing as a first step to NRL having investments in NRL stadiums. Not that I think Shark Park probably returns anything from an investment point of view.

Yeah you have to wonder what value a 17k stadium offers, too small for concerts etc you`d think, but it is a large catchment down there and a fair way from anything else. I wonder if there is any way they could reconfigure it to at least 25k now that the NRL are involved in the precinct.

don't think the nrl should be investing in grounds that are only going to be used by a single club
buying Accor/Allianz would be a different matter

Again personally they should own as much as they can regarding stadiums, not that i want them to own every single one, but ones like brookvale, penrith, the ones in the far away areas, to keep as the niche locations

I believe in the 60s the VFL purchased a ground in South East Melbourne for the purpose of playing finals and state games there. It was also the home ground for a couple of the teams
It had mixed success being on the outskirts of town and getting no investment from the government (who were happy to invest in the MCG)
They then abandoned it after building docklands around 2000

RU's struggles in Canberra, and the country more broadly FTM, are almost completely self inflicted injuries, and had little to nothing to do with RL. If anything the AFL has been more of a thorn in RU's side in Canberra than the NRL, and you'd struggle to find any ex-Brumbies fans at Raiders games aside from those whom always had an interest in both sports and the completely shameless bandwagoners.

In other words the Brumbies would still be struggling even if the Raiders didn't exist at all. It's also only just over a decade ago that the fortunes of both clubs were more or less reversed, and it wouldn't take much for the Raiders to sink back down to that level.

Describing Canberra as being 'back in rugby league hands' is not only reductive, but just flat out wrong. Canberra has never been a RL city in the sense that Sydney and Brisbane are, and likely never will be.
Aussie Rules is the sleeping giant in Canberra, and if it ever wakes up it'll be as big as the Raiders, if not slightly bigger, from day one.

I'm not a massive basketball fan, but Perth Wildcats do alright. Since 1990, the Wildcats have won 10 championships.

If SR crowned national champions the Brumbies would have been the Australian champions the vast majority seasons. I can't be bothered to look up their results, but they'd have to have been the best team in Australia at least somewhere between 15-20 times out of the 27 years of SR.

It's irrelevant though, the point is that they're very, very, successful on the pitch and they're still struggling despite that.

GWS isn't a Canberra team, and never will be. Give Canberra it's own team and those attendances would jump significantly.

They'd need to upgrade or replace Manuka as well though, as it's capacity for Aussie Rules games is only around 15k.

I’m not sure mate. Definitely good land value-wise but they’ll need to increase their investment for a refurb for a not-very-ambitious 17k capacity which still won’t be cheap anyway. With only one tenant plus the women’s meaning you’re selling tix for 15 or so days of the year? You’d be lucky to break even after loans and up-keep, wouldn’t you? They’d need a summer tenant but I’d be wanting guarantees on that which you probably couldn’t get

Sure, but there isn't really room for a stadium in Civic anymore.

Also, I think you'll find that NRL TV ratings in Canberra as a whole are better than AFL TV ratings. Again, facts v TGD's opinion, it's a bit of a theme with you isn't it
