Should have always been the main goal but the NRL seems more interested in pushing some lipstick on Leichhardt and Shark Park.

I’d add:
Newcastle - Stands at one or both ends, getting it to about 40k would be great.

Liverpool - New stadium for Dogs & Tigers if Accor isn’t getting rectangularised, both clubs have floated this idea.

That was pre CBA and the 9 weeks leave, Not sure you can squeeze pushing it back a week. Then get the month Internationals break and long enough pre season

It has nothing to do with the CBA.....go and have a look at this years GF dates, they're a full week apart.

The AFL tradition is last saturday in September, NRL is first sunday in October to coincide with the Monday Labor day public holiday, there can be a week separation between the 2 "dates".

In a state that copped a $380m for losing the Comm games, They will need to be sure it will make money or it won't go down well.

Adelaide last year for Origin was estimated to bring in $15m. Origin is an easier sell than GF's. NSW is the opposite they lose it then it is bad for the government

Won't make an ounce of difference.

The ACT gov is broke and wouldn't be interested in investing in a stadium even if they weren't. If the Feds fund one it'll happen irrespective of the local teams.

An A-league side probably don't want the increased capacity or costs anyway.

Multipurpose? AKA the field is too large for rectangular sports and too small for oval sports (an AFL field is more than 2 larger than RL so roofing that is an unnecessary expense). A stadium like that would cost way more than a new 30k rectangular and a Manuka upgrade if Canberra ever gets an AFL team.

Good luck building a roofed stadium with retractable stands big enough to accomodate AFL for any price that isn’t ridiculous. And the roof will need to be retractable too if they want to host test cricket. No chance.

It'll be more likely that once the new stadium in Canberra is (if ever) built, Canberra Stadium would be converted into a AFL and Cricket oval while Manuka gets rebuilt as a community ground

Re multipurpose stadiums Wellington Stadium just meets the minimum standard boundary dimensions for test cricket with 60 and 65m boundaries and is still far from ideal for rectangular codes.
Australian cricket prefers larger grounds and if AFL is a stakeholder they’ll want a field that accommodates 50m arcs and a centre square so the playing surface will likely be at least 160m in length plus an extra 5m outside the lines for safety.
so the likely field dimensions for a multipurpose venue are going to be at least 170m x 130m. Given a rugby league field is only 120 x 68m it’ll require retractable stands on all four sides to provide a half decent view and the cost of roofing it would be ridiculous.

The people who support a "multipurpose", including Andrew Barr covertly, don't actually care about the rectangular sports. They just want an oval for the AFL and cricket, the whole "multipurpose" thing is just a con to sell the idea to the general public that don't know any better.

They'd remove any plans for optimisation for the rectangular sports and expensive luxuries like a roof during the planning phase.
