I wouldn’t think that Melbourne is completely off the table. They would have the money to do it and they have a bigger stadium.

Victoria is broke, they won't be going after the NRL GF anytime soon. The odd State of Origin at the MCG is a great spectacle, it's fun to attend but nobody is getting a good view of the game.

Some talk on the radio today that Minns will consider a roof on ANZ stadium after one of his MPs saw the stadium in Vegas and with potential delay to Taylor Swift concert due to weather in Sydney. Apparently Minns was quoted as saying it's subject to costing but also said it could be justified to attract more live events to Sydney

If a roof gets put on it in its current shape that’s any chance of Sydney getting a world class 70k+ rectangular stadium gone for quite some time. Better to just leave it 5-10 years and go for the nuke and rebuild option again once the stadiums = bad campaign has died down.

The gabba might be dead but calls for a 70k oval stadium at Victoria Park are gaining traction.

That would be the biggest waste of tax payer money. The Lions would be lucky to average 20-25k to their games. There isn't a cricket match that would come close to drawing 50k fans in Brisbane.

It would be wiser for the Queensland Gov to build a 90k rectangular stadium -- similar in design to Lang Park but almost twice the size -- to attract more fans to Origin and host the NRL GF. Put a roof over it and every artist around the world will be queueing up to perform at it.

they’ve wanted a roof for ages and pvl has said no it’s not part of the money allocated to upgrade rugby league stadia

Retrofitting a roof would be be a cost prohibitive nightmare, not to mention the issues with drainage, structural integrity etc.

Apparently, the design of Accor included the plan for a roof to be added later on.

I guess at least adding a roof doesn’t preclude also bringing the lower tiers closer to the field. Would be better if the at least brought the ends in first though, that’d probably make the roof cheaper too.

I’d only count on the Souths one as being a safe bet long term- Tigers will need to upgrade their grounds to keep using them and the Dogs need a brand new ground

Early days yet but at least they've got a plan, which is more than you can really say for the Tigers.

The Tigers really need to get together with Macarthur FC aand get some sort of proper upgrade proposal for Campbelltown on the table. Leichhardt will never be more than a boutique heritage ground but if they play it right and team up with other potential tenants they should be able to fund it to at least that standard.

Re multipurpose stadiums Wellington Stadium just meets the minimum standard boundary dimensions for test cricket with 60 and 65m boundaries and is still far from ideal for rectangular codes.
Australian cricket prefers larger grounds and if AFL is a stakeholder they’ll want a field that accommodates 50m arcs and a centre square so the playing surface will likely be at least 160m in length plus an extra 5m outside the lines for safety.
so the likely field dimensions for a multipurpose venue are going to be at least 170m x 130m. Given a rugby league field is only 120 x 68m it’ll require retractable stands on all four sides to provide a half decent view and the cost of roofing it would be ridiculous.

I’ve always wondered of it would be possible to have a lower bowl that accommodated 25-30k and moved in to to create a genuine rectangular lower bowl set up, then retracted out with some fillers in the corners to create a 60k oval? Wouldn’t be cheap I know but maybe cheaper than spending $400mill on a rectangular stadium? I guess the corporate suites would be an issue?
