Western United's owners are funding their under construction stadium. Previous examples include Waverley Park in Melbourne funded by the VFL for $3 million and Football Park in Adelaide for $6.6 million by the SANFL as well as multiple renovations from the 1970s to 1997 by the Carlton Football Club at Princes Park, which they owned until 2003

Assuming Victoria Park is 60k I doubt they’ll get any events from the NRL like Origin or Broncos finals, I’d be annoyed if they did. Football & Union will hopefully feel the same way. Selling 7.5k extra tickets shouldn’t be worth shitting on your fans by playing on an Oval while a slightly smaller Rectangular stadium exists in the same city.

Hopefully Suncorp can follow not too long after the Olympics in getting an upgrade to 60k+. It will be 30 years old in its current form by then, older than parts of the GABBA which is allegedly on the verge of collapse. They should be starting the narrative early same as AFL and Cricket have done in the lead up to this decision, it will obviously help if Broncos can max-out their crowds there in the meantime.

Doubt it’ll happen but in an ideal world they’d use the GABBA site and all its new & improved transport links for a smaller rectangular stadium once the games are done.

Which is why the sydney situation is so problematic. Only cities in the world with multiple same sport stadiums are where clubs themselves have built them. Asking taxpayers to build 8 or 9 stadiums in one city is unheard of. The NSW govt has already built 4 RL stadiums in Sydney. And people are expecting them to fund another 4 or 5?
huh, doesn't London have a similar stadium situation? every soccer club has its own ground and then it has Wembley which isn't the home ground for any team.

Will the design allow it to be modified to a ptporary rectangle and increase to 65k for origin or NRL GF if Suncorp capacity isnt upgraded
Unfortunately not with the current incarnation of the concept/schematic design.

Doubt it’ll happen but in an ideal world they’d use the GABBA site and all its new & improved transport links for a smaller rectangular stadium once the games are done.
Other plans for the Gabba site.

The only time I could ever see them using the new oval stadium is when it finally comes time to knock down Suncorp and do a full rebuild, post Olympics.

Yeh 7k extra seats would mean an extra 2 million in revenue for origin games and a bit more for corporate but not worth giving fans an awful viewing experience

Brisbane had the chance to build a stadium which could’ve landed the nrl grand final and raised tourism but instead opted for a white elephant that will never get filled post Olympics unless it’s day on or two of the ashes

Not sure the Western United stadium will ever be built. They can‘t even fill their temp 4.5k stadium.

Venues NSW or whatever the QLD version is will always have the concerts etc to make it not viable for the private venue
Not necessarily. Marvel gets more concerts than MCG or AAMI.

Or, you build a 65k rectangular stadium at the GABBA site and keep playing at Suncorp during the build. Then, maybe scale down Suncorp to 20k.

Brisbane could do what Manchester did after the 2002 Commonwealth Games with Etihad.
It's what Sydney planned to do with ACCOR before the AFL stuck their nose in and sabotaged the original plans

once this Victoria Park stadium is built there won't be anymore stadium works done for years. It's even looking like they are going to scrap the Brisbane Live arena which Brisbane desperately needs. Sunshine coast light-rail and the extension of the Gold coast light-rail to the airport also not going ahead. This is what they are sacrificing to build this f**king stadium.

Its an Olympics .It requires a modern Olympic Stadium. Its no secret
And the Stadium cannot be a cheap and nasty POS considering that the world will be watching on and looking to embarrass Australia at any opportunity.
It's the idiotic QLD Labor Government who went after this thing when they don't have the money.
Same thing happened in Victoria with Dickhead Andrews and his Labor cronies.
QLDers lay in the bed that QLDers have made.

Robert Craddock reported on the back page that next week there will be an announcement to knock down and rebuild the Gabba for the Olympic stadium. I am sure, unless i heard it wrong.

Like I said most of those big stadiums in London are built by the clubs, not by the councils.

Which is paid for and owned by the RFU, not the local council or UK Govt.
Arsenal Wembley Tottenham and west ham all had significant govt money invested in them

Privately owned old / new Trafford will require significant govt investment too

Probably more too just lazy to check

None of that is true.

SC and GC light rail projects being delayed? Sure, possibly but they aren’t cancelled.

Gabba posses significantly more challenges to demolish and rebuild including greater costs. There’s other plans for the Gabba site at this stage.

If you bid for the Olympics you have to have a decent sized stadium to host Athletics which remains the elite sport of the Olympics (sorry trampolining and bmx fans). Unfortunately for the participants ine bestest rugby league fan eva!!! trophy that stadium has to be round/oval.

Whether they can build this stadiums in 7 years or less will be fun to watch.

As for stadiums in London the EPL has some of the biggest sporting clubs in the world making billions per year. Therefore, you get appropriate sized and modernised stadia.
