The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Stadiums are built with a 40-50 life in mind. Im sure when they built suncorp 25 years ago they thought its capacity would be fine for much longer than it has given Broncos avg was sub 25k.
As I mentioned multiple times in this thread; there are provisions for expansion of the stadium at around 5k-7.5k rise of capacity via the corners.

However it requires the internal perimeter awning to be demolished. Stadiums Queensland have little interest in acting on those provisions to expand the stadium in the near future but that could change.

Suncorp should just stay as is till they are ready to build a totally new stadium

An upgrade of such a small capacity isn’t worth it

But when it’s rebuilt they should be aiming for 70k plus to be able to take the grand final away from Sydney

I don’t know if the lang park site can fit such a stadium and moving away from the home of Brisbane / qld rugby league is emotive but 53k is too small for origins, derby games and magic.

Depends how much that would cost. Getting it to 60k would be nothing to be sneezed at, it’d be equal 3rd biggest stadium in Australia with Optus and (probably) Victoria Park. But yeh if that is going to cost not much less than a complete rebuild then not worth it.

Not sure how possible it would be but in an ideal world they’d take the roof off, rebuild the Western stand to match the rest, spruce up the internals where needed, fill out the upper tiers and corners then replace the roof.

Rebuilds like that are so costly v new build

60k isn’t a game changer to what is there now

You could get 10 to 15 years out of the current stadium.

Over that time frame Ipswich is a good chance for the 3rd Brisbane nrl side and by then the dolphins should be around 35k average so a new stadium will be needed

Western stand is the most complex to rebuild. Majority of services are housed there. There are considerable constructibility issues and whilst none of it is impossible to overcome, it is costly.

Internals are getting “spruced” up bit by bit, slow going but it is happening.

Cheers for the info.

I don’t imagine there is much appetite for a full knockdown rebuild anytime soon but how would that compare price wise to what I suggested? Ballpark for acting on the provisions you mentioned of filling in the corners?

Ball park? $185m-$225m. It could be slightly less if there’s cost saving VM options taken and depending which principal contractor would be likely to win the prospective project.

IMO $200m would be sufficient plus it would future proof other areas of the stadium for a couple decades plus.

I’m hoping this kind of upgrade for lang park is proposed for the Olympics but it’s wishful thinking.

I was expecting a higher figure to be honest. Seems decent value to get it to ~60k.

Yes …and as I said the test is once yer and World Cups every blue moon….once every 10 years at best where Brisbane won’t even get the final….the stadium is going to be an expensive white elephant…even the Sydney Olympic Stadium has been…. And that’s the biggest stadium in a much bigger city
So your proposal is to not replace the gabba?

The white elephant in Sydney has enabled the NRL to double their grand final size and Fifa to host a women's world cup final to name a few benefits.

And it’s provided a shocking viewing experience for them …. It’s very interesting that the AFL won’t play finals and GWS v Swans in a bigger capacity stadium anymore when they were the ones that kept it a circular shape to begin with ….…I wonder why that is ?

Have you ever watched an NRL( or rugby or soccer game ) there ? I won’t be back there except in the unlikely event my team makes the GF….

In regards to the Gabba… I think 40-50k would have been adequate … but I’ll leave that to the QLD taxpayers to worry about out

Got no idea about afl. I'll leave that story for you. You're obviously after perfection. Doesn't happen in the real world.

If they did rebuild Suncorp instead of Victoria Park where would the Broncos and Dolphins play? Serious question as I don't think the Gabba would be well liked was horrible viewing a few years ago.

AFL gets a free kick in qld with a fancy new stadium purpose built for AFL, while in Sydney the AFL lobbied to ensure that Accor stadium was ‘multi purpose’ thus never turned into a true rectangular stadium that could be used by rugby league.

If you’re in favour of this oval stadium in Brisbane just go post on bigfooty instead don’t bother pretending to be an nrl fan
This is silly, like AlwaysGreen says, Brisbane still needs a cricket ground that can compete with the other capitals.

30k is the perfect capacity

Where’s Brisbane going to lose tests to? Tasmania ?
well yea once they get their devils stadium.

who owns cararra and has any cricket ever been played there? that suns stadium seems like it only gets aussie rules games and nothing else at least new brissie olympics stadium will get aussie rules, cricket both national and bbl, events like concerts.
