The Liberals stance is to renovate Bruce Stadium, which is a massive waste of money because it's simply a band-aid and doesn't actually fix any of the problems with Bruce.

And at this point it'd cost more to get rid of the light rail then to see it through, so we're getting light rail whether it's completely inadequate for our need and only services 3% of the population (or whatever percentage it is) or not.

the compensation bill for the light rail being stopped varies depending on who you believe about 120 Million according to the Liberals , & 300 Million according to those lying twats in the Labor party

the actual bill is north of 1 billion just to complete stage 1 , & about 3 billion by the time its all done which I never think it will be because we'll never be able to afford it.
that compensation bill would have been a huge waste yes , but a lot less then the total bill as you claimed.

& I disagree the Raiders puiblic stance had no effect at all , maybe not in the eventual outcome of the last election , but the Raiders becoming vocal & involved & not sitting back doing nothing will make headlines , headlines Barr doesn't want ...
The Raiders will continue to chip away & good on them too , Ive never seen this attitude from them in the past & it shows they're serious about RL in this region & they will fight for it down here against anyone including Govts who take it for granted.

Just an observation but are the Raiders group not quite wealthy? What's stopping them seeking private investment partners from building a stadium perhaps with adjoining retail and apartments similar to the Cronulla arrangement although granted it's a slightly different situation. That way it's not reliant on a hostile government or having x number of tenants.

Don't get the Australian mentality of every stadium belonging to the state or council. Each club should be ultimately aiming to own and run its own facility so it is in charge of its own destiny. St Helens in England are an example of a club who went down the path of investing in its own ground, great example to follow.

I don't disagree, but even if we could find the investors we'd probably still need some government funding, and even then we'd still need approval, which is where it'd fall down like the Manuka oval development did.

Maybe with the numerous hands going up for aleague expansion he is just trying to offer some leverage for getting a team? Give us a team and we'll build you a stadium type thing. If Canberra don't get one doesn't mean that two tennants isn't viable, especially if they can use it for events and one off games of soccer etc.

If brumbies go though then doubt its ever likely to happen and maybe the raideRs group would be better buying Bruce stadium for a nominal amount and redeveloping it themselves?

The bones of Canberra Stadium date to the 70s, with the last major renovation in the late 90s.

You can only put so much lipstick on a pig. Besides, it's in a terrible spot.

If the Raiders were going to own their own stadium they'd be best building it at Northbourne oval, where they were going to build their centre of excellence.
It's in Braddon so it's right in the middle of the city and they already own it.

The only problems I can see is that there isn't enough room to build it as big as they'd like, and that even the cheapest flat pack stadium costs at least a couple hundred million, chuck a roof on top of that and the price would blow out even more.

They'd have to be willing to give up 5 or so thousand seats and probably the roof as well, but it could be done.
